To all,

Working in the Early European theatre, I'm working my way through past material and forgot how much fun the Heinkels! campaign can be. I'm going through and updating a lot of the missions, including a night raid on Glasgow and a bombing raid from Norway on Northern Royal Air Force bases in England, with Messerschmitt Bf-110d fighters providing escort.

I know, I'm one of those sicko bomber jocks, but if anyone wants to beta test a few missions here and there, just let me know. This campaign, based partly on KG 26 and fictional events, takes you from the start at Oldenburg during the Invasion of Norway and then your movement into Norway, participating in the campaign to capture the country. You then move down to the southwest coast of Norway, training to attacking British shipping, ports and aerodromes as you remain on the fringes of the Battle of Britain. After that, you then stage through Oldenburg and Italy on your way down to Sicily, where you constitute part of Fliegerkorps X that attacks British shipping in the Mediterranean, including an attack on the island fortress of Malta. After that, you end up in Benghazi, North Africa, attacking shipping as far east as the Suez Canal before making your way back to Sicily, staging through Italy on your way toward Greece, where you participate in the Balkan campaign and the effort to take Crete, even attacking Tobruk once again. Once this has been completed, you work your way back to Italy to participate in torpedo training, then stage through Oldenburg and Trondheim on the way to your final assignment...a trip to Banak, Norway where you'll end the campaign attacking the Allied convoys streaming into Soviet ports.

Ooops! Ain't it grand that you can't really get hurt?

What you don't know is I was actually able to make it to Sola aerodrome. It took twenty minutes to make it to the coast and put down. I was flying about twenty feet off the waves, doing 80 knots, with almost full right elevator to keep the wings level.

A real white-knuckle ride, I actually think I have a few more gray hairs after that one!

Hey guys,

I found a small problem with Narvik, which was a GSL port I created for the Bardufoss Hurricanes campaign. I'm also using it for the "Heinkels" campaign and found out that the GSL gob needed to be split. I'll replace the upload here, and at my site. Sorry about the screw-up.

Discus,

Just so you know, I haven't forgotten about you. I'm actually working on updating the Heinkels! Kondor! and Swordfish! campaigns simultaneously. In fact, I worked on "The Channel Dash" mission this morning.

In my opinion, the Alpha Swordfish provides a much different and updated feel from the old Groundcrew Stringbag, making the missions a bit more challenging. With all of these naval missions, it reminds me how much I hate creating convoys to attack.

I even had to hand-edit a mission this morning because the dynamic elements were spawning an airbase, rather than the Battle Cruiser Gneisenau. It took me a few minutes to remember how to do it, but eventually it clicked and the spawning problem was solved.

Never a dull moment in MB with this sim...:wiggle:

Take your time. I´m not in a hurry. I would certainly like to have so much time or could dedicate such a time to CFS2 as you do! My hands are full only with updating my objects-dp folder, getting rid of the excess of weapons, and flying a mision from time to time.

Cheers, Discus

To all,

I wanted you to see a few ships in the water streaming from England to France and back, so I think this will suffice.

Rami

Giving life to the otherwise big empty spaces in CFS2 (sea and air) is really a giant step in MB creations and it gives such a stronger inmersive feeling that I think it should be worth the effort.

But I´m not the one working in MB but only and end user!!

Thanks again for sharing your work.

Hmmm... I have a question, Drew - Why do the ships in that illustration have big RED 'X's' over them ?

I don't recall seeing that before....

Sc7500,

The red "X" means that if you were to hit the advanced info key flying the mission, you would not see the ship or its waypoints. I like to set up missions so that the only thing that you see is your flight path.

To all, but especially Collin or Pen32Win,

Do any of you have some aerial reconnaissance or other shots of what Souda Bay looked like during WWII? I'd like to build a GSL port there, if possible.

Thanks,

The Australian War Memorial has a very good set of various photographs, one of some of the photographs of the area:-

http://cas.awm.gov.au/item/069893

Also go to the Search window on the top right hand side at the AWM site, and do a search on Souda Bay Crete. I will have a bit more of a look and see what else I can find, I do have a good reference book but unfortunately it is in storage about 2 days drive away from me. :salute:

Rami, is this what you have in mind ? :jump:

Smoothie bet me to the reply, very nice contemporary photos, with that and the AWM photos you should be able to get an excellent result as you always do.

Good evening,

Well, I've taken a stab at this, and am working in the southwestern end of the bay, as it would have been far less built-up in 1941, I think. Here's a pic...

The ports are in place, but I need to add piers, crates, oil barrels, and then GSL it before I add the ships.

With regards to the town, I concentrated on the spit of land sticking out that you see loaded up with objects, using Wolfi's Med houses, Lindsay Watt's palm trees and such, but I'm also going to expand it where you see the red encirclement around the bay and make it Gibraltar / Pantellearia-esque, though I do not profess to have Jean Bomber's skills in that regard.

The trick when making it GSL is so that it won't interfere with the Malemes aerodrome, but I know how to correct that if it happens.

Howdy Rami;

Good morning,

I created the GSL port and town in Souda Bay near where it is today. This is just the port and the infrastructure, I still have to add AA guns and ships yet.

For quick viewing, have Achim27619's Greek airfields installed, and take off from Malemes aerodrome.

For the GSL port and town, you'll need the following items...

Wolfi's library objects, Part VII: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=12063

Lindsay Watt's tree package I: http://mask-rider.com/resources/ldw_treelib_061109.zip

Wolfi's library objects, Part VI: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=11709

Wolfi's library objects, Part IV: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=7488

Wolfi's library objects, Part III: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=7393

You'll need Xavierb's forts and walls: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=8184

You'll need Xavierb's warehouses: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=7557

Xavierb's barrage balloons: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=6271

Here's the fix for them: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=6455

And lastly, you'll need the Bedford Truck: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/downloads/download.php?lloc=downloads&FileID=14307

Now, I could use some practical advice on where to place the anti-torpedo nets, and if that should be in the GSL or not.

Enjoy, and please provide feedback!

I´ve tried your Suda Bay Layout last night with no results. I didn´t saw a single building or pier. My fault. May be I didn´t deleted the filelist.dat.

Although it was a partial faillure, it resulted in a very usefull flight, as using my MED install made me notice some horrible textures around Malemes and some textures wrongly positioned near Scicily that need corrections. Flying one of Malta missions assisting 2 Strinbags in the sinking of a U-boat, city textures appeared in the middle of the ocean.

I´ll try again soon to correct this glitches.

Discus,

It's a GSL file that you need to install first. The GSL file provides the town and the infrastructure, the layout file is just for ships and anti-aircraft guns in Mission Builder.

Hi Rami,

Your Souda Bay scenery works fine for me. It looks great, although most of it is a couple of miles south east of the town of Khania where it should be. As mentioned above, Souda Bay was a dispersed naval port. The population lived in nearby Khania, the second largest town in Crete. Khania also had a port and the town was badly damaged when the Germans invaded.

It´s going to be a tough mission, full of exiting objectives. Straffing in a HE111 with only a MGFF won´t be easy. Great work and full of details and options!!

Discus,

I'm VERY close to sending you and others a package for beta testing, with three of the five Heinkels! campaigns completed, I'm just waiting for a revised Lake Lesjaskog airfield. (Achim was generous to redo Banak so that it fits Rhumba's new scenery) I'm also about 50% done with the Mediterranean missions.

Well,

I'm down to my last two land-based strike missions for the Heinkels! campaign, but I'll have to build two new GSL ports: One at Benghazi (in progress) and the other at Tobruk. It's the one at Tobruk which may prove a bit problematic.

To all,

Here is the GSL Port of Benghazi. The GSL file contains the infrastructure, and the layout file contains the position of anti-aircraft guns and ships. I don't think I used anything different from Souda Bay, but you never know.

It just doesn't make any sense to build these facilities for a mission and then NOT turn them into GSL, ya know?

To all,

The Heinkels! campaign re-release has only one mission left to finish, along with the GSL harbor at Tobruk.

Additionally, the Fleet Air Arm update is about 70% completed, but I still have a ways to go on that.

Any takers on beta testing?

To all of yous,

While I'm working on the Fleet Air Arm, I came across the fact that the Fleet Air Arm actually had three ex-Dutch Brewster B-339b Buffalo fighters stationed there. I have been toying with the idea of possibly having a fictitious mission where you take these three aircraft and fight your way to the HMS Illustrious which is steaming off to the south of Crete.

The catch is, you don't have an tail hook, so landing will undoubtedly be difficult. (Don't blame me if you can't get that baby on the deck...) I would also need a fictitious skin for the Brewster.

http://asisbiz.com/il2/F2A-2/MkI-RAAF-805Sqn-AX814.html

The other option would be to evacuate the island with Fulmars. These were also stationed on Crete at the time, but those babies had tail hooks.

Just let me know with your votes, AND NO, YOU CAN'T SAY BOTH!

Ian Astill

From a logical stance, If I had to fly the mission and I had a choice it would be the Fulmar. But this is a game and the more unusual things are usually the most fascinating.

The landing would be difficult but not impossible by a long wayr, I've been practicing landing Battles on carriers for a mission I've been working on my Operation SeaLion ''What-if'' campaign and once you get the knack it's fairly easy to get a reasonable landing. I even managed to get a He-111 safely down the other day!

I say go with the Buffaloes!

Didn't the RAF pilots flying Hurricanes land on the HMS Glorious (without tailhooks) when departing from Norway? Poor sods. They were then sunk by the KMS Scharnhorst and Gneisenau a few days later.

And contrary to your instruction in post 1; you could make two missions. One with each aircraft. We could then double our fun at the expense of double your work!

Jagd,

Landing the Hurricane is a peach. The Buffalo, on the other hand...

Use the 1% Buf it does have a tailhook.

I spoke with Rami on skype about this. He could put a tailhook on any plane but wants to do without one.

PS: I dood it! I set up the USS Ranger (VN_Ranger) at 30 kts with a 15 kt headwind, 0-750 ft. I took off and came around for a landing, held my speed at 98 kts, ay full flaps and touched down without a tailhook. (The LSO went nuts!) I found that by pulling back on the stick, I could hold down the brakes without tipping over. I came to a stop in the middle of the forward elevator. I used Thicko's Brewster F2a3. So I think it is a doable mission Rami :)

I flew it again and filmed the flight. I used poor/sloppy proceedure: forgot to open canopy and cowl flaps, took too long an approach on landing and forgot to trim up as I approached. I set her down a bit too far forward, but managed to stop okay just the same.

Shadow,

I'm watching the landing and am screaming out: BRAKES! BRAKES! :icon_lol:

Well done! :salute:

I ended up doing an "A" and "B" mission. One with the Buffalo, one with the Fulmar. The one you fly will depend on the random chance element in the campaign. Jagdflieger's suggestion, though I didn't want to do that, eventually pulled me in. :toilet:

Ha ha!

Always remeber that nothing is impossible for the guy who doesn't have to do it!

Thanks!

There is some info on the Buffaloes on Crete here:
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=23596

and here:

They are referred to as ex-Belgian aircraft and they didn't have the tailhok either. There is a picture of AX 814 in the second link.

Thudman,

Thanks, I was able to find the aircraft numbers and a few photos, sending them off to some painters to see if they'd be willing to do one for me.

Rami,

I've been thinking the Buf without a tail hook is just the overboard swim I need to clear my virtual sim sinuses.:icon_lol:
Looking forward to the flying challange....probably be a lot of plops and :pop4:s until I get the landing routine correct.

Good afternoon,

This one took a little while to set up...38659

Next up is the Battle of Cape Matapan.

To all, but especially Sopwith,

I can't thank you guys enough for the tools and goodies you guys make that I use constructing campaigns. For the "what if" Buffalo mission on Crete, Sopwith was generous enough to create a skin that actually represents one of the Buffaloes based at Malemes in early 1941, complete with serial numbers!

I know you'll be just as quick to lump praise back onto me, and I appreciate it...just know the feelings are completely mutual! :salute:

Good evening,

Well...I have all eleven of the convoy and ship attack-based missions for the Hellas! campaign done, there were a total of eight of them. Thus far, eleven of the twenty-eight missions are completed, the toughest of which are behind me. With a little luck, I may have this campaign wrapped up and ready for beta testing by Memorial Day.

After that, I'm not sure what I'll do next...I have a couple of choices...we'll see which way I go.

The Bufs are lookin real nice! Wouldn't have been though without Sopwith and your research and ideas also. Thanks Rami!

Good evening,

Well..."Hellas" is rolling right along, fourteen out of twenty-eight missions completed. :jump:

Good evening,

Still a work in progress because of the disjointed land / shoreline heading southeast for several miles, but I now have a harbor at Bari for "Beaus in the Sand!"

All that awaits now is the Bizerte scenery that Jean Bomber was working on...:wiggle:

Thank you Tobob! :ernae:

* - Oh yeah...also, the Boston Bruins beat Tampa Bay 1-0 tonight to reach the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 21 years. I was 12 years old the last time.

Great!

Also, the Boston Red Sox are making the Tigers (nah, make it Kittens) look like little leaguers the last two days at Comerica Park.

Still not as sad as the cowardly Lions!

Rami,

I will try to fix up the stretch to the south as well. It looks like a road runs along the water in real life, but isn't working so great in the sim. Glad you like it because I think you're gonna like what's comin...

Still not as sad as the cowardly Lions!

They need the Medal of Courage from the Wizard of Oz, that is if they can find the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City.

Oh well, we'll see what happens this fall at any rate.

Lots of good talent on the Tigers and not too shabey. Have to wait and see if they can shake out the the bugs and do a bit better.

Tobob,

Just don't change the grey harbor area for Bari itself, I already GSL'ed the sucker!

Good afternoon,

Well, the Bari mission for "Beaus in the Sand" is beta-tested and in the books. Only one mission remains...but requires the Bizerte scenery from Jean Bomber.

Now, back to May, 1941 and "Hellas."

Good afternoon,

Though I'm not working on it this afternoon or evening, I am up to twenty-one out of twenty-eight missions for "Hellas!" completed. :wavey:
