3 weeks ago I dumped facebook and wow my spam box is empty, I only get 1 piece of spam per week now, down from about 30+ per day.
Now I know where all that junk came from, I was wondering because I only go to 6 websites on the web and never give out my email addy, now I am down to 5 websites I visit. This is my SOH work computer and strive to keep it clean.

I use a dumby e-mail account for Facebook and other non-important sites. That way that box gets all the spam and my real working e-mail account stays clean.

Ickie, it is not Facebook in itself, but rather how you use it and what you put on it, methinks. Facebook is my #1 means of communication for over a year now AND I am running some 30 websites, forums and blogs.... using a few very well-known e-mail addy's. No real spam problem, except for the odd wave now and then.

Forums are fine for longer discussions and support, but losing ground rapidly as a place to meet friends and exchange frivolities AND real information !

I don't and won't use Facebook or Twitter. What you put on them gives too much info about you... and it's there for any nutcase to see too... forever. I've been hearing of many getting out of them for those reasons, and all the crap that's sent to them.

Plus they now sell your info to anyone that wants it.

No kidding. A mate at work put on it that he was going on holiday for a fortnight. Some little sod managed to figure out where he lived from the stuff people had written over that week and robbed him blind. All they left was the carpets and the wallpaper.

Just to expel any myths here.

No the data is not public unless you make it so

No there is no spam unless you make it so

No you dont have to put all your details on there,... ...unless you make it so...

...see were this is heading?

Mainstream media and other fear groups would make you believe that MSN messenger is the cause of bullying and brought 9/11 about. If a kid is getting bullyed on msn messenger then they can simply delete the contact, if they dont and continue to get bullyed, then why are we worried, they are choosing not to delete the person!

Likewise facebook has a ton of settings for public, privacy and even down to group friend level, so some friends might see one thing others another. Personally I have nothing really publicly availible and I'm not just gonna accept any hillbilly to be my 'friend' on there.

Facerbook, messengers are no more dangerous than IE. Browse responsibly and all is ok, click on the 'I cant believe what this dad did do his 18yr old daughter' link then dont come crying to us that its the programs fault your bank details got hacked into!

Rant over, sorry major pet peeve is using this stuff as some escape goat, much like parents using 18+ games as escape goats. Why a kid should own GTA is beyond me, its an 18+ game for a frikken reason!

I've been on the book of faces for around 18 months now. Never had any problems. I do not,as a rule, install/sign up to any facebook addons such as games,"see who's browsing your profile",etc etc etc.
My required privacy setting are perfectly adequate and ...I don't have 50000 "friends"...just those that I actually know and interact with regularly. :)

Problem exists between user and keyboard. It is not fair to knock Facebook. The privacy controls are about as good as you can find on any other website. You specifically choose who sees what, if anyone. Quite simple, and I love that they are constantly updating the user experience.

I've been on Facebook for almost a year now and I haven't had any spam e-mail problems. My biggest problem is having to weed through some of the inane posts my friends put up, but it's no big deal and I don't have the heart to de-friend them. :d

Rather than defriend, if it gets too bad you can use the various hide functions to hide either all posts from a friend, or certain posts re: apps from a friend or all posts from a certain app etc

Good one stiz! I'm totally Anti-Social so you'd never find me on Facebook or Twitter but I still get spammed. Hmmmm....must be from past profiles on employment sites. I do really want to work only 2 hrs a day cashing your international checks and wire transfers. Sure, I'll give you all my personal information to apply for the position. After all, you are a reputable international accounting firm.
