The Lancaster was built by Avro. Avro also built the Manchester a twin engined plane using 2 24 cylinder liquid cooled engines. The Manchester was a failure and Avro had invested a great bit into the design decided to make it a 4 engined plane using the Rolls Royce Merlin. The Lancaster has a larger wingspan and overall length as compared to the Manchester. The larger wing span improved overall lift and ceiling, and the length helped in handling and bomb load. The Lancaster was a great plane that found its beginnings in a failure.

...and all this time I thought the Manchester just had a pair of V-12's...:icon_eek::guinness::icon_eek:,again...

...after googling... Rolls Royce 'Vulture' four banks of 6cyl's in an 'X' configuration...

...and the Hawker 'Tornado' fighter prototype sported this monster as well...
