New Wrinkle:
Flying in BOBCFS3, I'm seeing the water flicker with what appears to be a second texture trying to overlay the first. It's a different color, and has a different wave pattern than the one which appears to be the underlying one.

It's only the water; land is ok, fine.

I've taken the effects folder and the effects.xml file from ETO and replaced the ones in BOB one by one, and there is no difference even though the water in ETO is alright. MAW is also ok.

Where else should I look for water effects???

Thanks.

Hi KellyB,
Try looking for duplicate water textures in another sub folder in the Effects folder. Eg: h2o2.dds or whatever. Different installs may have the texture under the weather folder under the effects folder, for instance. I've found over time I get a bit of corruption from duplication of textures through the subfolders of the effects folder.

So it may be worth a look. :wavey:

I have had this happen... Some years ago in my Advanced CFS3 set up..

I had taken Winding Mans scenery files and loaded just the parts I wanted, Not the entire program..

And WOW.. I suddenly had two different water textures... Blinking..

I solved this by Cut/pasting the water textures from Winding Mans Scenery program..
In the assets folder to the fxtextures folder, and Overwriting what was there..

Ever since it only has one beautiful water effect showing..
Check the assets Folder for water textures..

That is where found the problem..And solved it by this action..

Hi kelly, :salute:

The BoB install (as it stands) uses the stock water textures. If you haven't added in anything else then what you may be seeing is just the stock effect which is does sort of 'flash' as the animation textures are added in and out.

The next install will have the same as the ETO uses which are the best ones to have.

:wavey:Hi Pat Have any idea when the next install will be? Crazy bout your BOB:salute:

At some point I had copied some effects files and backed up the Effects folder as OriginalEffects and thought CFS3 would ignore it. Apparently not. I didn't think CFS3 was smart enough to find it.

Removed them, and end of problem.

Thanks for the pointers so I knew where to look for demons.

Yes its a funny quirk of CFS3 that it will find dds files ANYWHERE within the install - another common area of duplication is between the Shared folder under the Aircraft folder, and sundry cockpit, weapons dds found either in individual aircraft folders, or in the Weapons, Pylons or other folders. I find that things like guages sharing the same name may be quite different. Trouble is, CFS3 will use them at random if named the same.

In my more paranoid moments I also remove renamed xml files (eg. sound_backup.xml) and create a new Backup Folder outside the root cfs3 folder... :icon_lol:

Hi Old Tiger, hopefully later this year but more likely next.

That's what I'll do from now on having discovered that CFS3 is smarter than I thought at finding dds files, if not discriminating as to which ones it should be using.

Dead shame. Wish I knew more about this stuff because the scenery builders have done wondrous things for CFS3. Oh, for a bit of time to dissect how scenery files work.

Those FSX textures look da bomb!
