I'm relatively new to FSX. Just getting my feet wet. So this may be a really dumb question.
Can I use any sound file in FSX, i.e. FS9 file and have it work in FSX?
There are a few freeware add ons that don't have great engine sounds. But I have good sounding ones for FS9. Can they be used?
Thanks in advance.

Tom, the FSX and FS9 aircraft sound system is quite similar. Each aircraft container (aka aircraft folder) usually has a default \sound folder which holds the WAV sound files and the Sound.cfg sound configuration file. Just as in FS9 you can alias your aircraft's sound to another aircraft or another folder with custom/add-on sounds, in that case the Sound.cfg only contains the alias path like:

[FLTSIM]
alias=.\SimObjects\Airplanes\FA-18\sound

or simply:

[FLTSIM]
alias=FA-18\sound

Sometimes custom sound sets are stored in the FSX root \Sound folder in which case the aliasing looks like:

[fltsim]
alias=.\Sound\Allison_J33
