Finally found out how exactly to do HDR with my camera, and I had a week off so plenty of time to try it out. Still trying things out, and playing around with the various effects.
Yesterday we had some nice weather here, so I went to the local zoo:

Today it was a lot colder (Almost freezing) and overcast; I decided to go visit the town of 'Radio Kootwijk' which was built around a long-range broadcast station used to communicate with the Dutch East-Indies. The largest building there, Building A AKA 'the Cathedral', is a large art-deco style concrete building that used to house the large generators that powered the station.
Great location to try some more HDR!:

Bit heavy on the effects this one:

This is placed above the entrance; the two female figures symbolize the people of the Netherlands (Right) and the Indies on the left, the head stands for the voice and the waves are of course the radio waves.

Old bus stop:

The water tower; not bad imho because I had to take the three shots from my hand; I used a monopod for the others.

Very good first tries Ferry, only the last image had the dreaded halo real bad around the trees and structure.

It's a play with me thing, but it is a good thing too when done right.

Not to steal this thread, but look at these two images. The first is shot at normal EV 0 and processed in Photoshop. the second is an HDR image with three bracketed shots of -2, 0, and +2 Ev. The HDR image was merged and tone mapped in Photomatix pro and post processed in Photoshop.

Note how much cleaner and how shadows and highlights are better in the HDR image. Also note the Chromatic Apparitions (little pixel specks of false color) in the single processed image as opposed to the HDR image.

It doesn't have to look false colored or cartoon-like, HDR serves a purpose in all outright photography.

Caz

The model is my 1/72 Sopwith One and a Half Strutter.

Hey All,

Really nice efforts Ferry? I like the first two in the first set and the 3rd 4th and 5th in the second. As Caz points out there is haloing - I see it in several of the images. What software are you using?

I'm trying out Photomatix, Ed.

Guess the halo is due to the relatively low contrast in the photos; lots of shades of grey. HDR probably works better with higher contrast. I was hoping for a blue sky but sadly all we got were clouds yesterday. Might have to go back in the summer to take some more photos. ;)

Cazzie: Nice model!

Ferry,

You can reduce haloing by increasing the Highlights Smoothness in the Tone Mapping section under Miscellaneous Settings. It will brighten the sky overall, thus reducing the haloing around the builds and trees.

It's all a subjective trial and error process, but there are a few do nots, haloing being one of them. I find a lot of good tuts here: http://www.hdrit.com/category/hdr-tutorial/

Thanks for the tips!
