Available soon, there are still two missions to build.

This will be a 4 missions pack: 3 historical and 1 random patrol in the Bay of Biscay. Maybe I'll build one from Luftwaffe side (Ju88C-6).

It is dedicated to those who like flak and cold water :bump:

I've nearly finished, I'm working on the Luftwaffe missions.

The Sunderland can suffer very heavy damages in comparison of the Catalina or Halifax, I've never been shot down by U-Boats flak yet.
The only time I've been shot down is when I engaged a Do24. I came to close to it in the worst position and it's rear gunner shot me down.

A great reference is Goss', "Bloody Biscay"
I have AeroJournal magazine n°30 (April-May 2003), in which there is an article about V./KG 40 which is a partial translation of "Bloody Biscay".

I also have also a special edition of "Le Fana de l'Aviation" wich is a nearly complete translation of "Dark Sky, Deep Water" by Norman Franks.

I have been, by Ted's new Flak U-Boat which is a a good representation of some of the later U-boat's defences.

I have also been shot down by a Kondor. those AI 20mm's are killers

Both books ar great finishing Bloody Biscay, I almost felt weeping for the crew of V/KG40 in the end when they were thrown to the lions at D-day!

February 6th, 2011, 11:21
As the missions I've build are random, I haven't met the Kondor yet... but if I do, I will suerly not try to shoot it down!!!

Regarding the flak U-Boot, it is survivable with the Sunderland... but you have to comeback home after the bombing run!:jump:

I think I'll add another mission to the pack. As airfields in Brittany were very buisy (Ju88C-6's, Fw190's...), allies decided to strike them in september 1943 in order to decrease the pressure on Coastal Command bombers and to reduce the strength of interceptions of raids directed on U-Boats pens.
The mission will be for the B24-D. On september 23th, Lorient recieved very heavy damages from a B17's strike and V./KG 40 had to moved to Bordeaux temporarily.

While looking for historical informations for this mission pack, I've collected enough stuff to extend it.

Finally, it will take longer to buld it as I plan to build a 'Battle of the Atlantic II: the Bay of Biscay'.

This will focus on battles that occur in the Bay of Biscay and around western coast French harbours from 1941 to 1945.

Well 1943 and 1944 eras are finished and I've started 1945 and will finish with 1941.

Regarding 1945, I'm building a mission around 'festung Lorient' (festung = fortress). There were several heavy batteries to cover the harbor and sub pens and one of the most modern of the Atlantic Wall was on the isle of Groix ahead of Lorient.
This battery was made of two double turrets from Cruiser SEYDLITZ for a total of four 203mm heavy guns. They could fire 360° / 35kms and were guided by a radar Fumo 214 SEERIESE.

I've looked everywhere in the building folder and have'nt found anything so, does anybody know if this type of coasal fortification available in CFS3 (see pictures below)?
By the way, this research in the building folder was great, I found some really great and usefull ACC and ETO stuff there.

If not it is not a problem, I'm using a 105mm bunker facility.

Hello Loîc,

I didn't find anything like this in the buildings folders, but I think it couldn't be so much
complicated for the "Bismarck" modeller (or other battleship) to export a twin gun turret from it, adding a bunker as support and make the building you need...
(it's so easy while saying) There is also a modeller that made very precise radar buildings, let's try asking...

Nice project indeed !

This project is getting bigger and bigger, I've collected many historical informations. The mission pack will be named 'The Atlantic Wall'.

It will highlight everything related to operations from Atlantic harbors and associated airfields.

Era 1: German invasion and their rush to capture major French harbours before the armistice.
Era 2: early RAF strikes against u-boats bunkers under construction and Luftwaffe attempts to struggle England just after the Battle of Britain.
Era 3: Bay of Biscay Coastal Command anti-sub offensive and allied strikes against sub pens.
Era 4: Allied invasion and Patton rush into Brittany with the help of partisans in an attempt to capture harbors.
Era 5: Operations above 'Atlantic Pockets'

There will be many, many different aspects of aerial operations (special ops, anti sub patrol, airborne ops, CAS, Air Sea Rescue, strike, escort, artillery spotting, pathfinder, night interdiction...). Some of them have been very rarely, if never, created in flight sim world such as minelaying or wheather recon for exemple.

Collecting informations takes hours and hours, the pack will not be ready before september if everything goes well.

Whew, LZ! This is an entire theatre of ops! It'll be stupendous when you're done.

Squadron Leader J.A. Wilson, N°156 PFF squadron, raid on Royan, january 5th 1945.

Player is the Master Bomber and has to highlight several targets for two waves of bombers during the mission. In this mission, player will see fire on Royan getting bigger and bigger. A little bit of boring spawn setup but the result with ETO effects is really terrific, this mission is really immersive.

Those 3 screens shots are on chronological order:
1- arriving over Royan, 05:30 AM.
2- Royan after the 1st wave of Lancaster has bombed.
3- Royan after the second and final wave of Lancasters has bombed.

August 1944, the 3rd Army is rushing to the west in an attempt to capture a harbor in Brittany, allies desperately need a major logistic platform for future operations in Europe.

The battle to capture Saint-Malo is tough and the 3rd battalion of 8th infantry division have been surrounded following an assault against Dinard airfield. Take off with another L4 and drop blood plasma to the isolated battalion, this is all what can be done at the moment. Good luck, this is a very dangerous task as the area is infested by AA guns of 912nd light flak battalion that is affected to the airfield defense.

(full text is included in the briefing, this is a historical mission).

Eras 3 & 5 are finished.

I don't know, there is still a lot of work to do. I'm finishing era 4 at the moment but it is long.
I'm doing a lot of facilities for D Day beaches only for one mission, the attack of ZG 1 near Caen in the afternoon of 6th of june.

Then, I'll build a Jedburgh team drop in Brittany in august 1944 but it will take some time as I have several ideas for a new concept but it will require some boring spawn setup.

Once it is done, I have to do missions for eras 1 and 2.

If the He177 is released, I have informations for two missions.

So, I think, no release before august or september.

Quick overview of Era 4. This era mainly focus on operations against Brittany in August 1944 (US 3rd Army was rushing to the west in an attempt to capture a major harbor) and early operations against Atlantic Pockets.

- Coastal Command anti-sub patrol at night along French Atlantic coast in support of Normandy landings.

- Minelaying... sometimes, bombers involved in these missions had to face nasty situations.

- You will operate from an ALG in support of Patton's 3rd Army advance in Brittany.

- Beaufighter in coastal anti-ship patrol.

- A24 against Atlantic Wall fortification on the Isle of Groix.

06-06-1944, welcome in Hell!

Based at Vannes in Brittany, the I./ZG 1 was engaged in the battle of Normandy with it's Ju88C-6's. Trained for long range patrol over the ocean and without escort, the unit was decimated within 4 days.
The Battle of Normandy was the end of an era for the Luftwaffe maritime units and the final act of the Battle of the Atlantic.

For a better immersion, I have build a mission template by creating all 5 beaches and paratroops areas. The action takes place near Caen (British and Canadian area). On the 3rd picture, you can see Sword and Juno in the background.

The night fighter camo is historical as for production purposes, it has been decided to produce all C6's in night fighter coulours whatever the unit they would have to be delivered from about end of 1943 / early 1944. From this time, maritime units recieved heavy fighters in NachtJagd coulours.

I finally managed to setup this mission more or less as I wanted it to be originally. Spawn setup was a nightmare on this one, it took me ages.
In order to make this one challenging, player has to stay at 1000 ft during all the drop procedure or he will get a failure message.
Altitude measured by altimeter is from sea level, of course, but it seems that spawns work with altitude from ground... CFS3 is really tricky for mission builders, it took me several evenings before I found a compromise in the tuning.

788th BS, Harrington, july 8th-9th 1944. D-Day + 1 month, allied armies are still stuck in Normandy 'bocage' and near Caen, the battle is particulary tough. Once enemy lines will be broken, primary objective will be to capture a harbor in Brittany as a major logistic platform will be the key of the success for future operations. Brest is particulary attractive for High Command because it has the biggest facilities. In the view of the future offensive in Brittany, it is extremely important to coordinate action of the numerous Maquis units that are very active in the area, this is the mission that has been affected to commandos called Jedburgh teams. They are usually composed by 3 men: 1 US, 1 English and 1 French.

Tonight, you will drop team GILES and containers supply in Brittany (Drope Zone Fred 3, Brest area). The DZ is oriented east-west. Reduce speed to 130 miles per hour or below for the drop. If enemy forces are spotted near the DZ, abort mission. Taxi to the runway behind the lighted 'follow me' car.

II./KG 30, Le Culot, june 17th 1940. Invasion of France is a success and our troops are advancing quickly to the western coast harbors. They must be captured before a possible armistice with France as they will open the door of the Atlantic for the Kriegsmarine, they are high priority targets in the view of future operations against England.

A lot of activity is reported at Saint-Nazaire, British Army is evacuating their remaining troops (operation Ariel). You are ordered to to strike ships in the Loire estuary.

Saint-Nazaire is one of the French city that suffered the most from bombings during WWII. It started in june 1940 and never stopped until may 1945, the city was in ruins.

Wekusta 2, Nantes-Chateau Bougon, march 20th 1944. (Wekusta = Wettererkundungstaffel = Wheather Recon Unit).

Perform a routine wheather recon mission up to the Irish coast. These missions are vital for U-Boots and Luftwaffe operations in the Atlantic. You have to measure atmospheric pressure at sea level and above coulds at some locations. Report also wheather conditions changes all along your route. Take car as we have lost several aircrafts on the Irish coast in bad wheather condition.

You've been assigned Ju88D-1 D7+HK (WNr. 430334). Crew: Oblt. Alfred Schmid (pilot - Staffelkapitan of Wekusta 2), Wd.Insp. Karl Rösch (meteorologist), Obfw. Fritz Schaper (radio), Fw. Helmut Grupen (gunner).

Note: as you can see in the two pictures, wheather is not the same during all the flight. Thanks to ETO wheather specialists who have build such wheather files that bring a lot of immersion.

Lanveoc-Poulmic near Brest was a seaplane base. After the invasion, the German kept it active and particulary busy with Arado 196, He115, Breguet Bizerte or Do24 among others.

I've build this base for an air sea rescue mission. It is a 'simple' facility file, not an airbase. Moreover, as I don't know anything about mos files, gound is made of grey 3D flat boxes build in gmax.
Well, could be better but with my skills in building facilities, I'm quite happy of the result.
The choice of buildings and vehicules in ETO is amazing, it took me adges to look at ACC stuff!! :icon_lol:

The picture is the base in the 70's. It is still a French Navy base but it is now a school and helicpters base, there are no more seaplanes.

March 27th 1942. Operation Chariot, a commando raid on the heavily defended Normandie dry dock at Saint-Nazaire will begin tonight. This drydock is the largest in western europe (it was the biggest one in the world when it was completed in 1932), the only one that can be used by Kriegsmarine biggest warships such as the Tirpiz. The objective is to damage it in order to prevent any use by larger German warships. In case of success, they will not have any other choice than going back to Germany if they need repairs, this could be a decisive point for the allies in the terrific Battle of the Atlantic.

RAF Bomber Command mission is to perform a diversion prior to the commando attack, the bombing should keep German troops in their air raid shelters and not immediately ready for action. The bombing run must last 1 hour, it will start at 23:30 and the commando assault should begin at around 01:30. 5 squadrons (35 Whitleys and 27 Wellingtons) are engaged tonight. This is a very special mission with very strict orders, this is not a carpet bombing, all crews will be on their own: 1) do not drop your bombs on civilian areas, engage only clearly identified military targets (refer to briefing map for details) _ 2) Each bomber must stay several minutes over Saint-Nazaire, drop your bombs one by one against various targets. 3) Do not fly below 6000ft. As you can see, very accurate bombing is requiered, come back to base with your bombs if you can't acquire any target. Wheather is far from being perfect, expect low clouds.

The pack is nearly complete, I still have to do:

-> strike against the cargo Pietro Orseolo in tha Bay of Biscay: Mosquito MkVI (anti-ship) & Typhoon MkI (escort + anti-flak).

-> maybe, for USAAF Mustangs lovers, a P51B escort in june 1944 against a target in Brittany.

-> He177: I can do 3 missions where this aircraft type was involved if it is released soon. Otherwise, it will be after, this is absolutely not a problem.

We have a He111 with a balloon cable cutting device at Ground Crew but I don't remember a Ju52 equipped with the huge ring for minsweeping operations.

No. 487 RNZAF squadron, Sculthorpe, december 1st 1943. The Pietro Orseolo is one of the most successfull blockade runners used by the Kriegsmarine, she has already achieved two travells from Bordeaux to Kobe (Japan). This vessel has been reported heading to Lorient, a Roadstead operation is planned to intercept her and our squadron is in charge of the strike.

The Pietro Orseolo will be engaged near the isle of Groix. Typhoons of 266 squadron will provide escort (8 aircrafts) and Typhoons of 193 squadron will be the anti-flak section (4 aircrafts). Expect heavy flak from the cargo and it's escort.

Hi Loic,
do you have recommendations for what setting to make the flak in this mission? Is the hardest level for AA a suicide mission, or is it possible to survive? Something I've tweaked has made my ETO flak deadly accurate and the AI flies straight and slow, turning them into sitting ducks...:isadizzy:

I've build these missions with flak setup at Veteran level, I have written something about this in the readme.

It is not possible to fly CFS3 with flak setup at Ace level.

Ah good, thanks for that.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on these missions!
In ETO IIRC the approach to "dumbing down" flak is to increase the "noise" parameter in each flak gun's xdp file.
However I think they've gone the other way and made it too easy. Flak hardly ever hits you.
However its hard to get the balance right. Personally, I like the setup where if you fly straight and slow, you are likely to be hit...which is what a lot of the AI does.....

thanks,
D

The pack is finished now (46 missions).

After several evenings of frustration, I've been able to fix the pathfinder mission. Not 100% as I wanted it to be (CFS3 limitations...) but I'm quite happy with it as it is.

I'm on holliday next week, I plan to release the pack in september as initially expected. If the He177 is available soon, I'll add a couple of mission for it.

Right now, I have started to work ob a small mission pack (3-4 missions) for the Defiant.

Hi Guys,

Hi LZ, I just checked my ETO 1.4 install and I do not have the B_sandbags-f facility file.

I checked the following installs as well and none had this file.

Stock CFS3.
ETO 1.20 (base install)
MAW.
PTO.
CFS3 BoB.
DPC CFS3 Korea.
OFF.

Its possible that the file came with a mission set somewhere along the line and some people must have had the files in the thier CFS3 install when they installed ETO and thats how ETO has picked up the file.

I would attach the file here for those who already have your mission set and possibly re-upload the set with the missing files and a revised link to Nigels plane for people to who download in the future.

great effort on your part.

regards Rob.

I am actually preparing the final revision of this pack.

What's new:
- missing facility issue corrected.

- Ju88A-17 (X1)

- Ju88P-4 (X1 What If)

- P38-J (X1)

- Liberator GRV (X1)

- He177 (X6: 2 Training, anti ship in the Atlantic, Anzio, Normandy, Ferry Flight). Regarding the HS123, I've used the same procedure as for the Do217 missions released in the Anzio pack.

What period (Era) are we talking about Loic? Nothing comes to mind. Once rockets were in widespread use, CC and most of the RAF in the ETO abandoned torpedo attacks as not being a cost efficient way of sinking ships. Too costly in aircraft losses against uncertain returns. I will look though for you.

As the war progressed, the threat of night-time German bombing receded. Therefore, the need for a night-time fighter also receded. The Beaufighter was then used primarily in an anti-shipping role. The Beaufighter was used against U-boats (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/u-boats.htm) in the North Sea and in the Bay of Biscay. As an extension of this role, some Beaufighters were fitted with torpedo-carrying gear from April 1943 (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/world_war_two_1943.htm) on and rocket launchers.

I checked and it is from 404 RCAF squadron, they operated Torbeaus only in Norway area and when they were engaged in western europe, they were already equipped with rockets (LBS_Atlantic Wall_44-08-08_Beaufighter in this mission pack is a 404 squadron).

I have actually 12 new missions completed (He177, P-38, Typhoon, P-47, Ju88, Mosquito...) + 1 corrected. Another mission is under building process.

If the Ju52 Minsweeper is released soon, I'll include a mission for it (1./Minenschuchgruppe.1). Mission is to sweep mines ahead of Pietro Orseolo, a blockade runner that is arriving to Lorient after a successfull trip.
Now, if anybody has a good idea to make it challenging and different from usual missions, I'm interested.

One of the missions is for 20th FG / 79th FS, King Cliffe, july 9th 1944.
