View Full Version : How big is yours?

I hope to replace my 4+ year old pc some time this year with something faster in order to run FSX at a better frame rate. One option that I have been looking at is to include a SSD hard drive in the new build. Apparently they are very fast, but are still pretty expensive for a fairly small capacity drive.

Anyways, I thought that I would check on the size of my FSX install to get a guide on capacity needed. I was really suprised - 82.9Gb ! And I'm still adding to it............

So, out of interest, how big is yours?

I have two 80 Gb SSDs, one for the OS, one for FSX.
I agree that 80 Gb is too small for FSX, but for now it's just fine. If needed, I'll buy another SSD later, when the prices have dropped a little.
And yes, the FSX loves SSD drives :)

I am using a GSKILL 120GB at TechCorp and it is filling up fairly quick! However even at 70% it is extremely fast! I still recommend OCZ or Intel's newest though. Corsair is getting ready to introduce a bigger SSD as well.

On my flight Sim PC I have 1000 GB internal HD and an 500 GB external HD.

internal HD I have 837 GB unused.

external HD I have 307 GB unused.

I have 250 GB internal HD in the PC that I have not used.

I don't have anything on this PC that is not for M$ flight Sim's.

I have 8 SanDisks with 29.1 GB full of M$ Flight Sim stuff.

Also 56.4 GB of DVD-R.

Now this is not all FSX. It's from CFS3 and all the Expansions plus OFF2.

To say I like M$ flight Sim's would be an under statement!

This was a bit long winded but you did ask. LOL

Well I had been looking at a 120GB SSD drive, but now I am not so sure . A WD VelociRaptor was the other option that I had started to look at (300 or 450GB).

Seeing how big some of the installs that have been posted here are, I am not sure where to go! I actually put a new HD in my current pc only last summer, so I know that I am still 'building' my FSX install.................

Just thought i would post here with regards to SSD and Velociraptors...

Firstly, if you go get a SSD make sure you have one that is TRIM enabled! this will extend the life of it vastly!

With velociraptors, i run 3x in my desktop machine and nothing else. They are a cheaper /GB than SSD's and there are the latest versions which have the 6GB Sata interface and 600/400GB sizes! That im hugely tempted to go for untill the SSD's come down in price and up in capicity...

its also advised that you do what a lot of ppl have said here, and what i do, is to have seperate disks for your O/S and FSX... :-) keeps things seperate and if you do lose a disk you only lose either O/S or FSX not both!

I have a 150GB Velociraptor at home. It is a prized and loved possession! It is used only for FSX. We are using 600GB raptors at TechCorp and they likewise are treasured for gaming.

My main FSX drive has 228 gB of stuff, mostly Horizon VFR & OrbX stuff, and a shedload of planes. The Add on drive (1 tB)for Add on scenery only is already at 127 gB, & I am about to load about 25 gB of ChilliView photoreal scenery onto it, and then d/l & load another 30+ gB as well!!!

My Xp Pro FSX install is only around 68 GB at the moment, spread around on various partitions.

I recently installed Win7 x64 in a dual-boot configuration and created a new FSX install on a
Win7 partition.

To minimize overall size I decided to share all my addon scenery between the two installations.
To that end I freed up an entire partition and moved ALL my addon scenery contents to the
root directory of that drive (J:\). So the drive contains the various named folders which
contain the "scenery" and "texture" folders within them plus the default "scenery" and "texture" folders.

In both the Win7 and Xp Pro FSX folders I now have an EMPTY "Addon Scenery" folder.

In "My Computer", "Manage", "Storage", "Disk Management" I right-clicked on
the "J:" drive and selected "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."

I then Clicked "Add", Select "Mount in the following empty NTFS folder"...Browsed to the
empty "Addon Scenery" folder in the Xp FSX directory and clicked "OK".. I then browsed
to the Win7 FSX directory and added that empty "Addon Scenery" folder.

Now, my drive J: is mounted in the "Addon Scenery" folder of both installations.

Anyone that wants to move all their scenery folders to a new, fast drive could use
this approach to remove all those files from the FSX drive.

I also have folders for AI traffic and other SimObjects on other drives, outside of the FSX
directory. These are pointed to in the "Main" section of the FSX.CFG file.

- Sceneries: 11.5 GB
- AI Aircraft + Flightplans: 11 GB
- Add-On aircraft: 2.8 GB

Might need to clean out the aircraft folder again...half of the 21 add-on planes very rarely get taken up for a spin.

Yeah, but 1 day I might want it, and it does help to have options, and it looks soooo pretty, and it's a nice area, and it was a bargain, and...and....
Guess Im running out of excuses :jump:

Funny my FSX directory on my 'old' machine is 82.0 GB and the FSX directory on my new machine is 80.7 GB. However I always had the idea there was much more on my old machine....

Cheers,
