Well, no one did one with a VC since FS2002 days.

But I wouldn't do one. A 990 maybe, but no 880.

Speaking of cargo; I'm thinking of cutting out the baggage door and doing a dedicated cargo model - provided that the cutouts are always in one and the same location and not dependant on the company doing the conversion.

- Edit:

But then again; Gmax is such a nightmare to use...

Bjoern, if you are going to start cutting the 580, then by all means please cut a big, hydraulically controlled cargo door into that baby!

By the way, any change in the skins for the 580 or do they remain the same as the FS9 skins?

The VC has more changes than the average user will ever notice. And yes, the wipers are working and behaving realistically.

Also, there's strobe lights now which should make the FAA stop complaining.

Thinking about adding a GPU...but where to plug it in?

I would think that adding a tank would require a lot of 3D model work, new skin mapping, and a new flight model.

The 3D and texturing work isn't actually the worst part. With a tanker model comes the request to add firebombing capability, which would require FDE, gauge and effect work. And that's work I simply don't want to do.

Thanks for making the cargo version.

Can you round out the edges of all the doors please. That's always bugged me since the old FS98 version (http://www.freeflightdesign.org/text/freeflight.html) I helped make. We had sever limitations on poly count back then and as the model has moved through the FS versions over time (and I got sidetracked with French fighters) no one has addressed that area.

How about putting in a plug in front of and behind the wings to make a 5800 model?

Can't; won't.

I'm trying to slice out the doors as good as I can (it's not square at least), but the mesh is just too old to put in tons of refinements.

I will not touch the mapping of the main parts. GMax is kind of a nightmare to use compared to 3DS Max (on the upside, GMax exports faster than Max 9), especially in the mapping department, so anything I do is, well, rather lo-fi and simple.

:ernae:No.
Reason: See above. I won't touch any relevant texture mappings.

Also, the 5800 is *way* more than "just" a stretch. Think new engines (= FDE) and a partial glass cockpit (= gauges).

I don't get paid for investing hours of my time into models, so I actually don't have to.

And even 'though I know that it'll bite me in the arse later on, I'll do it this once because it's in my "boundary of willingness".

But here's the catch...there'll be just a .mdl file for the airtanker subvariant and the end user will have to figure everything else out him/herself. Mwahahahaha!

That's a pretty neat rain and wiper animation! Too bad the clearing action of the wipers is purely an "on" or "off" proposition. It would be nice if the wipers were constantly clearing a slowly reappearing film of moisture, but that might be an impossible animation with FSX.

Nothing is impossible in FSX, but both time budget and patience have limits.

I'll see if I can do something about the "popping" of the wiper trail. To have a slowly appearing film however, would mean a few more materials which in turn means worse performance and a ton more work for me.

Still, at the moment, the 580 is as performance friendly as Piglet's planes, which in turn means it performs slightly better than FSX's default aircraft.

Thanks, Bjoern. This is really nice.

Brings back memories for me. Early 80's I was flying a King Air out of Fort Smith, AR, and we often flew from there to Dallas, usually KDFW. Frontier did the same run in Convairs and usually flew similar times and altitudes to what we did, 17K to FL200 or so. We never varied, but when thunderstorms were around, they'd fly the route at 5000--always seemed weird to us. Couple of years later during a simulator session, the instructor happened to be a former Frontier pilot and I asked him why. He said they really wanted to be up higher with us, but their radars were so bad that they couldn't paint any weather, so they figured they were safer just bumbling along down low. Sometimes it was better being a corporate pilot. :icon_eek:

Thanks again for bringing this one to us.

I've noticed that the passenger loading door (one with the folding ladder)
will only stay open when the engines shut down. And sometimes it will open
and close automatically when your selected takeoff airport loads up.
You then see the door briefly open then shut (no keys selected).
Was that purposely programed into the plane?

Yes and as it's in the gauges, you can't do anything about it.

Majorly annoying when you have to frequently refresh the aircraft during development.

- Edit: Nice paint, Tankerguy!

If you turn on the "fasten seat belts" switch in the lights panel over the pilot's head the door and stairs should remain closed. At least that's the way it worked on previous CalClassics versions of the 580.

Hi Guys,
This aircraft looks really amazing, however I am having problems with installing it into FSX, I have downloaded the base package, installed the 2 x files into the gauges file but I still have a message re old FS gauge being "this gauge was created for FS98 so when I load the aircraft the panel is incomplete, I really would appreciate some help on this as I'm stuck.
Thanks

That info comes a few weeks and tons of swearing late. :|

The base package from the Calclassic page isn't the one with my updated model.

And my package doesn't show such errors. If you get warnings nonetheless, just ignore them or edit out the offending gauge from the panel.cfg.

I saw one of these at Warbirds over Wanaka 2010. They make incredible amount of noise. :jump:

I need a Trans-Texas Airline (aka Tree Top Airline) repaint. My great-grandmother used to fly in to visit us on one of these; back in the days when you could stand on the terminal balcony overlooking the boarding area and watch. I blame my current hearing loss in part to those Rolls Royce Darts, they were noisy.

There's a fundamental difference between tnhe 600 series and the 580. The RR Darts weren't as powerful as the T-56s and they tended to stick those butt ugly small radar noses on the 600s.

Btw: Spot the differences.
