Hey T,
I agree, "Air Force" is a great film by the great director, Howard Hawks. If I am not mistaken, the "Mary Ann" was a B-17D. Some elements of the film's story were based on a composite of the actual exploits of several bomb groups that operated in the Philippines in 1941/42. The most famous of these Forts was "The Swoose" (half swan-half goose), the only B-17D that survived and is now being restored. One of the skins available at SOH depicts the "The Swoose".

An excellent book was written by Herbert Brownstein a few years ago titled, Odyssey of a B-17, The Swoose and published by the Smithsonian Institution Press.

The main visible difference between the B-17C and D model is that the D had cowl flaps. The early Forts are my favorite and I was very excited to find the Alphasim model. Since I am flying it in FS9 there are a few problems, but OBIO helped me to get most of it running. I am hoping that eventually some polished aluminum textures will be created.
Happy landings,
John

Yes..........Old war movies or aircraft movies are ????

but it is the recorded actual aircraft....flying in formation no less....

and ...

The models makers were the computer graphics of the day...........or the CFS2 of the day

only 7 years ago ..........there was hardly anything online about aircraft........

Now there is so much ........

60 years from now................it will be B-2 Stealth Bomber reels.........

I agree, the planes in "Airforce" are updated B-17B's. The telling feature is the commander's dome is offset to the side, whereas the B-17C/D the dome is centered.
I do love this movie for the footage of the B-17's and of the P-39's in action.:jump:

I mention the movie ..."Broken Arrow".....above

I made a comparision ..........

But it struck me that they were totally different in that........

1943......the enemy was a foreign country.....

1998 ....the enemy was within.........and Barbarino and Howie Long none the less

Hollywood had to find a different .....protagonist..........antagonist

Still kinda Hokey.....yes

Aircraft sequence still cool....yes
