South African Spitfires

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if any of the repainters here would be able to do some repaints for the A2A Spitfire of South African aircraft - Perhaps Sailor Malan's aircraft might be a suitable aircraft. As you might be able to see from below my avatar, I am proudly South African, and having South African repaints would be really great for this Spitfire. If the are any A2A Spit South African repaints available now, could someone please point me in the right direction?

RobH already did the Spitfire Mk.1a flown by 'Sailor Malan'. It is available here at the SOH in the download library. The repaint is done for the A2A Spifire.

Just noticed a rather glaring error in the readme; Adolph Gysbert Malan is called Squadron Leader D F Malan! :icon_eek: Daniel Francois Malan was the Prime Minister from 1948-1954, and the father of Apartheid; he even invented the word, which I believe literally means Separateness, but was translated as "Separate Development". The only way in which D F and Sailor Malan were related was that they were both descended from french Huguenot settlers. In contrast to D F Malan, Sailor Malan was anti apartheid, and should be an example for Afrikaners to follow today, as he was even part of a white anti-apartheid association that allied with the ANC.

Sorry for the speech, just letting people know the D F Malan and Sailor Malan were very different almost opposite people. :)

Just a heads up.. This thread was just reported for containing politically charged statements. I personally realize that these statements are nothing more than clarification on an error made in a readme file, however.. Someone took offense.. Please keep the political issues and statements out of the threads.. Silly as it may seem in this case, as you can see, there is always someone who will take it wrongly..

Didn't mean for it to come out that way, just clarifying things. As a proud South African these things are important to me :)

Back to Sailor Malan: He had a habit of not shooting down a german bomber, but sending it home with most of its crew dead, or badly injured. :icon_lol: He also wrote the 10 rules of Air Combat, which became a staple for RAF pilots to follow.

Craig, after your request I went through a list with South African pilots which were flying with the RAF during the Battle of Britain, but I noticed most of them had been flying Hurricanes. But when you can supply my anything like a good profile from an Spitfire which you would like to have, I'm most happy to do the repaint.

There isn't much which currently can be done about the 'glitch' in the read me. The file is already in the library and it will be difficult to make any changes. Nevertheless I have informed RobH.

Henk, but these are all Mk.Vc with tropical filter, except for the last one which is a Mk.IX. The A2A Spitfire is a Mk.Ia, which looks very similar to a Mk.II or Mk.Va, but doesn't really look like the aircraft you posted the profiles from.
So far there isn't a FSX Spitfire model with a tropical filter.

When you want I can paint the A2A Spitfire in one of these schemes, but there is no way to make it look like a Mk.Vc.

BTW, on Malans aircraft, the underside of the fuselage is half black/half white. What was that color-scheme for?

If you are talking about the underside of the wings being half black/half white then that was a scheme adopted at the very start of the war for recognition purposes so that trigger happy AA crews didn't shoot down friendlies! It was all but gone by the time the Battle of Britain came along when the undersides were being painted sky blue.

First of all, thank you for catching my error. I have been checking my resources to find out where the error came from, but after 4 years, I can't find, or remember where I got the information from.

The only way I can think of fixing it is to re-upload with a corrected read me, and then maybe Rami can remove the old upload. I will see what I can do.

Craig, no problem, but it won't be finished before next year.....

There were several variants of the black and white under surfaces.

Originally Spitfires were delivered with aluminium under surfaces. Late 1938 or early 1939 the 'White & Night' under surface scheme was introduced. The border between white and Black was over the middle of the bottom from fuselage and the ailerons were painted in the contrasting colour. So the port wing and the port side from the fuselage were painted black, while the port aileron was white. And the starboard wing and fuselage half were painted white with a black aileron. However until June 1940 the factory delivered the new Spitfires with the complete port wing painted black and the complete starboard wing painted white.

From the aircraft which were delivered with aluminium under surfaces, often on on wing was painted (port) black (Night). As most aircraft were repainted 'in the field' there were many 'unofficial' versions.

The 'night & white' under surfaces were replaced by sky on all Spitfires from June 1940.

The used of roundels below the wings was abandoned with the introduction of the Night & White" scheme and officially re-introduced on 11 August 1940. However there are several pictures which show roundels on one of the many variants of the 'night & white' scheme.

On 27th November 1940 the night/black wing was re-intoduced again. Only the port wing was painted black and the rest remained sky. The roundels were maintained. 22nd April 1941 this scheme was abandoned again and the under surfaces received their sky finish again, until the introduction of the new grey/green day fighter scheme om 15th August 1941.
