The L049 in the screen shot was taken in early beta testing at the time of development by John. I worked with John Howard White assisting with gear modeling, animation, contact points, and startup smoke effects. John and I became close friends during the project. He was an awesome modeler, teacher, team player, and human being. He inspired others to higher achievements, showed respect regardless of your stature or place in the community, offered his services, support, and even taught online classes for those interested. John was a fighter pilot and had a kind of respect for life you often see in pilots who fought in wars. He is a friend in my heart, and I miss him dearly.

I was one of the beta testers on the L049 project and John is dearly missed as a friend.

OleBoy, The basic TWA is the base model for it. Keep in mind that it's a few years old now and the VC version was never completed. But the exterior model is superb and the bare metal in the textures is some of the best out there IMHO. Also the panel and flight model were state of the art at the time.

I never really thought of it as being complex though.

There are many repaints available.

JHW had lung issues for many years, was in trial programs at University Hospital twice, but ultimately succumbed to the disease. Through all that time, aside from his breathing capacity issues, he was cheerful, upbeat, always talking of great technologies, modeling, the next release, and just thoroughly loved all that was going on at the time. He was a pleasure to know and be with, a fine man who loved life and had a thirst for technology, more advancements, and new things. He instigated change, pushed forward, loved progress. His excitement was contagious. :-)

The L-049 is a beautiful model, easy to fly, through all phases of flight for me. She needs relatively careful engine management only in terms of using realistic-like MP and RPM's, and not whipping the throttle around like a kid. Fly her smooth and respectable and she will be a lovely bird for the hangar.

I do not miss a VC in the bird. The panel is awesome, an effort by many of the greats in this business.

As one of the testers there to add to fully true story of devotion-->John in the later stage(lung) was not allowed to work so much on computer at home-->so he worked/designed on the beach with a notebook.And with all respect to earlier modellers-->John's L-049 is the first which got the fuselage shape,the cockpit windows and the wing fuselage joint right-->Which is a nightmare-->just ask Manfred from the Connie/Starliner team.

That is one of the best freeware planes. I love that thing. I do have the problem of cool freezing the engines ALL THE TIME, lol.. but I love it anyways.

That engineering panel is brilliant.


Also, on not missing the VC, me either. The 'views' are just too well done to need one, in my humble opinion.

A great package even now, light years ahead in 2005. As for JHW what a modeler, team leader, and teacher.
Fun, too. He gave life his best all the time.

As for the 049, it is so easy to fly even I can land it.
Still a great ride when youre in the mood for big iron.
