my archiver of choice, the 7z format really does give you a noticeably smaller file.

It does indeed - I accidentally compressed a file of photos into .7z for my daughter today - - she doesn't have 7Zip yet - and compared the 2nd iteration [regular zip format] for fun...

Almost 300k smaller in 7z !
