View Full Version : Bf108 gauge artwork

The round instruments of the historically restored D-IBFW are complete.
Since each of those aged uniquely over the past 60+ years there isn't much that could have been cross-shared, artwork-wise so the whole mess took longer than expected, but we're getting there.:jump:

Thanks much, guys!

Lukasz, this is an exact replica of the privately owned and historically restored D-IBFW that's flying in Bad Nauheim/Germany.
You can spot a few differences over the historical original, for instance the manifold pressure gauge is of a later war fighter variant, the airspeed indicator is of swiss origin, the clock needles and kohlsman knob have been replaced with newer items, the prop pitch lever is a replica. :-)

YoYo, that's the high poli cages that'll be used to render2texture on to the low poli geometry.
If you followed our Fw190 developement back then you'll know that there won't be much noticeable difference in the final FS outcome.
Hard-edged shadows from the above render will be replaced with an ambient occlusion layer and the glass reflections will be FS-standard.
The 3d pros will spot a few differences in the very fine details such as screwslots and the like which will be baked into the texture rather than using 3d geometry, but the casual user will not see a difference thanks to some serious CGI voodoo.:bump::engel016:

Atleast that's what I think he means.

If i may ask, is there ANY possibility of doing the Nightfighter variant??

Don't know about a nightfighter version. They put some Panzerfäuste under the wings and used it as a ground attack aircraft towards the final days of the war though.
Whatever, we're not doing military versions but two currently flying planes, one each with (almost) historical instruments and with imperial (steam) gauges.

Is the large crank in the middle the propellor control?

Yep TJ, that's the prop pitch lever.

Wow, Mathias has really an artful hand when it comes to baking textures... those surfaces look incredibly realistic.

Just one suggestion: the "wear and tear" of the instrument board is too subtle IMHO. Dirty it up some more. Our club airplanes look this "factory-fresh" for four weeks at best. :icon_lol:

Mathias
January 15th, 2011, 06:04
Thanks for the suggestions vora, but no, won't happen.
There's quite a lot of scratches and dirt allready in,
on those screenshots probably somewhat toned down by those parts that did not yet receive weathering.
Believe me, it really comes together once you sit in the plane and throw her around a bit and watch the light playing with the surfaces.

Pretty nice work! And a sweet plane, too!

Got your FW-190 bundle as a christmas competition freebie from Aerosoft and I am really impressed, the sounds, system modelling is great, too, engine just doesn´t get up on every try, and one has to keep the MAP in sight, or it will have a sudden end! And the visual quality is just stunning, too!

As said before; the model is not even near to finished and most of the textures are 'just to give the model some colour'. But I think it gives an idea of what the finished model will look like....

We had a captured Bf 109 at NAS Jacksonville. The workmanship was impeccable, The mounting bolts had a Strassenschmuck on each one of them with a "Dutchman" or another screw intersecting the main bolt as a safety. There were no shortcuts taken even though it was late in the war.
I wish I could remember the placement but it was 66 years ago.

Thanks for the shot Huub. If the modeling is as good as the interior, I'll have no choice but to try to buy it. I've had the freeware FS9 Taifun By Guenter Kraemer for a while. I enjoy it but it's very dated.

We had a captured Bf 109 at NAS Jacksonville. The workmanship was impeccable... There were no shortcuts taken even though it was late in the war.

That's why our ancestors didn't win the war:
Their aircraft simply were too sophisticated... ;)

Kidding aside:
That's a very impressive work of art emerging, Mathias!
The Taifun beyond any doubt is a beautiful and groundbreaking aeroplane, and I had the pleasure to witness this grace flying at several Berlin Air Shows (D-EBEI "Elly Beinhorn" of Lufthansa Stiftung).

Actually, there's an interesting parallel here... How much does an F-22 or an F-35 cost? How complex is it to maintain and build? How much does a flanker cost? how complex is IT to maintain and build?

Hmmm, I find it interesting that the Americans have followed the German (a la 1939) method and the Russians have stuck with what they know works...

If I were the Prime Minister of Canada, I would toss the F-35's and buy Su-30MKK's. 1/20th the price per unit, easier to maintain (and build most assuredly) and more than likely, just as deadly... especially if you count numbers as a quality...

Yes but no, won't happen.
I could re-use just the canopy framing, trim wheels and trim indicator and parts of the pedals.
Everything else is considerably different from our D-IBFW so that we would have to do most stuff from scratch, since we don't do half-arsed stuff that is. Would make it a christmas 2011 release.
Problem with these old survivors is that there are basically no two around that would be even remotely the same.
There is nothing in this world that would justify another year of developement time for this one.
After all it's the Classics Hangar, devoted to old German iron and D-EBEI is a modern plane in an old framework, nothing that really interests me.

.... Looks very 3 dimensional even in the screenshots! ...

Thanks MM. It's all about light, direct light and indirect light, light photon bounces, color bleeding and resulting subtle changes in illumination and coloring throughout the surfaces.
I think there's no one else in our little industry who makes an as extensive use of global illumination rendering technics and procedural shaders as we do.
I'm quite satisfied with the natural look and feel and the subtle shading of the VC.
You just don't get bored by an over-artificial, overly "contrasty" look.
No slap-in-yer-face photoshop effects, just consequently executed physically correct global illumination and shaders.
Aw, I'm beginning to digress.....

Hey Mathias, can you post comparison screenies of the classic vs 'modern' panel? I am curious of the differences :)

TJ, we don't do a modern panel. Only the historically restored panel of D-EBFW will be in the package.

Isn't that ugly? :bump:

For the guys that need IFR capabilities we do a kind of "what-if-I-want-a-historical-panel-with-modern-functionality" thing.
The "IFR light" panel is basically a mix of the period blind flying variant and the radio compartment of D-ESBH, the Bf108 operated by the Messerschmitt Foundation.

Here's a first draft:

Okay Mathias, enough with the teaser stuff already. You can only throw Christians to the Lions for so long before the audience loses their blood lust. This is the back side of your most recent 'absolutely guaranteed by' month.

Ok, I'm guilty, I admit it.
