I presume that are referring to simpler way of adding names to the 'mdlnames' file. That would be great if do-able ( I doubt it tho) especially for multiple installs.

well this is not what you want to hear,
there isn't a special utility that looks at your CFS2 install then writes all the model names in for you.

But why do you want to

But lets consider this a bit,
What does mdlnames.txt actually do?

Well; the only purpose I can find is this
Mission builder uses it to translates some of the obscure model names into something more meaningfully descriptive.
This is especially important for library objects.
If you rename mdlnames.txt or hide it from CFS2 in some way and then make a blank replacement,
then run mission builder you will find all the infrastructure objects are now named as their dp name.

Now I recently made a load of dp's for FS2k2 city landmark library objects, the names of which are even more obscure than CFS2 objects.

It was neccessary to add these obscure names in to mdlnames.txt and provide a useful description of each object is as I placed them into the sim.
To do this and save typing out each name I did this
First I have a utility that will provide information about the contents of an object library.
The output is a txt file that includes the object guid name scale and various other stuff.
like this

next I start MS Excel and use the data import wizard, using commas and spaces to delimit the data so that all the names end up in one column.
now I add a column on each side of the names column and fill them with " quote marks
thats as far as I get in excel cos the equals sign means to much to excel. So I select the data in the three columns and copy and paste into a new txt.

There, now all I have to do is type = and a description
that saved me half the typing and no worrys about typos and mis spellings.

Now, think about how you describe each of a list of very similar objects bearing in mind that
Mission builder sorts the list alphabetecally.

Guys......you ain't gonna like this.....but....I don't bother.

When I install a new ship model into my cfs2 for testing, thats all I do. Most of the time it will show up in MB. If'n it don't then summat is wrong.

Me too! I haven't added one in nine years and never have a problem. I'm still running the original CFS2 install (among others) and have run it on four different computers. There are 157 ships installed with no problems....never found a ship limit like the 100-plane limit.

as I said

mdlnames.txt is only usefull if you ve got loads of scenery objects

I dont bother putting ships and planes on it. I do take the stock planes off, and I have run MB with a empty mdlnames.txt file

Very Interesting what you say about no ship limit Nole

OK...so I asked a useless question but I knew I would get an answer from you guys. I fly the European theatre and am looking for more ships on the German side. Germany was not as strong a naval power as Britain but are there more ships out there aside from Collins ship yard and the ground crew?

Thank you,:jump:

aside from Collins Site and the GroundCrew Ships PSullyKeys is making some fine boats, maybe no German yet. I know Usio has done at least a couple of German frigates, I also like browsing in the FS shipyard. Neither of these sites offer CFS2 multi LOD ships they are player ship (aircraft models) that need converting.

Here (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=combat+flight+simulator+2+german+ships) is the best place to look for CFS2 ships :jump:
