but I found another website with pictures.... can't say I'm excited about this prop:

I was responsible for the artwork on a whole, except 2d :wiggle:

With regards to the prop, if you have an issue with it in-game then please don't hesitate to contact support. It may well be the angle of that shot, for I have not noticed that any time I flew it (nor when I made the screenshot!).

With regards to a paint kit- this can be arranged. There is a plain white scheme for basic repaints.

Best
Dan.

ryanbatc
July 22nd, 2010, 11:33
Hmmm it could be the angle but it looks like they didn't make a smooth polygon for the spinner. It does look decent for 20 pounds I spose its worth it. It's fast which I like. How is the FDE? Who made it?

d0mokun
July 22nd, 2010, 11:39
I can assure you that I did ;-)

The flight model is by David Chester of Addictive Sim (and FCS fame).

All the best

ryanbatc
July 22nd, 2010, 11:42
Never heard of that fde designer... can you do knife edges and hammerheads? How bout forward slips and spins?

d0mokun
July 22nd, 2010, 11:49
From the chap himself:

You can do hammerheads, spins, inverted spins, flat spins, normal and inverse loops. Knife-edges should be possible with practice. Sideslips are limited by rudder control but are possible to a degree. That may well affect knife-edge as well.

Four real-world Pitts owner/pilots (including the owner of G-BKPZ) confirm the accuracy of the flight model.

I used to have a Pitts S-1S but sold it in Dec 08 http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/images/icons/icon9.gif

I usually steer clear of aircraft that I have real-world time in (because you're never going to be satisfied with it) but am pretty tempted by this. I notice this is the S-1T with the 200hp and constant speed prop, mine had a smaller donkey and a fixed pitch McCauley - is there a fixed pitch version?

Here she is...

I have an original S-1T flight manual and parts manual. I'll check this evening when I get home to see if I can locate it and let ya know.. for some reason I don't recall seeing anything about a hand pump when I've looked at it in the past.

I don't have this addon...yet....but it's common to replace the hand fuel pump with an electric item (http://vansaircraft.com/cgi-bin/catalog.cgi?ident=1280436991-12-612&browse=engines&product=fi-install). Perhaps this is the type of fuel pump that is modelled in the aircraft. :)

How the heck are you getting it to fly knife-edge? It keeps wanting to roll over on its back everytime I get 90 degrees bank. As soon as I add top rudder to hold the nose up...over she goes and no amount of aileron input will stop it.

Totally agree. I can't make correct Knife-edge too. This Pitts lost too much altitude in this position, and I can't do nothing for keep it at line on this manuver. As I see - it's not just "my problem"...

Hi Anatolpopov,

This is by design. The Pitts Special S1-T is a very light aircraft with a powerful engine. It will creep into a roll on tarmac if the brakes are not on. A couple of people have noted that for them it would actually pick up quite a bit of speed and so I quickly altered this in order to stop speed building up beyond about 20 mph.

One of our Pitts pilots also mentions - and I quote - "when taxiing it on short dry grass I have to run it at idle and ride the brakes to prevent it going too fast."

Unfortunately a feature of Flight Simulator means that if your default starting profile does not have the parking brake set on, the sim starts with the aircraft already rolling!

Thank you for buying our Pitts. I hope you are enjoying it.

Best wishes

David

My sounds seem a tad off...anyone else?

Yes to this question. I just downloaded the product. Fanstastic externals but the sound was very strange. Sounded like a recording in a tin can. Nuff said, I simply replaced the audio track with my IRIS Cristen Eagle sound files. Huge difference. You even get the prop buzz with high speed passes. Don't know what to tell ya guys, but an aircraft rendered this well needs much better sound files.

The aircraft does drift on the runnway at idol, even with parking brake on.

No problem with the prop graphics. All looks well here.

Overall an exceptional model, just needs a few tweeks here and there.

Addictive Simulations

It was really fustrating..... but yes indeed my Pitts had to be held on the not very good brakes on start up and liberal use of these not very good brakes were needed on any surface other than long grass!!

Apparently though, my brakes were excepionally not very good.

All Pitts vary in some way or another!

I have said it before somewhere .. but can't stop myself from repeating it......
The Addictive Pitts is the best sim I have flown in any FS version by far. Not only does it look real... it flies real. :jump:

How the heck you got that flight model so accurate will remain a mystery to me!

Please feel free to point any doubters in my direction..... it beats hands down the excellent 'Real Flight' SF260, I never ever thought I'd be able to say that...well I just have.

Congratulations Addictive .... more please!

...Sorry Gajit, but I know the feeling.

Sometimes doing repaints make me want to bang my head on my desk. But the final outcome is really worth the headaches.
...I would really like to know if a paint kit has been released for this Pitts.
I'm assuming that answer is yes, but nothing has been mentioned of it since Dans' last reference to it.

If you are doing the repaints by the included blank textures, that is one heck of a method of mental punishment. As I despise that means and I end up making the kit myself.

Thanks. All time consuming.

Unless you have access to better pictures of the Red Eagle than I do, you may end up drawing a lot of the sponsors logos. If that happens and you need some pointers, I've drawn a lot of them for previous repaints. I'd be glad to help if needed.

Having spent a lot of the day (off & on) creating an info layer for this beast to track & label everything, I about have the S1_1_t template finished. Right down to the last bolt top (whew) What a chore!!

S1_2_t will be a wash as it's not to entailed.
...and S1_3_t won't be bad either (double whew!!)

At any rate, I'm about to start getting my first repaint for FSX finished. Having loaded up the model with my repaint applied, bothers me. It doesn't look right. It looks real dark and dull. The shine is there, but the looks are not as vibrant as Gajits' repaints.
....The way mine looks reminds me of seeing it on a cloudy..dark day. And for the life of me I can't figure out why. I don't know if it has to do with the spec layer or what's causing it.

....This is my first ever repaint for FSX. It's gone well so far. Except the dilemma mentioned above. Once I get beyond that I should be good to go (I hope)

I don't know for sure if i am doing it right or not. Maybe I should do a run-down of the process I'm doing to make things a bit more clear.

First, I save (via Photoshop) to 32bit .BMP
Next I open it with DXTBMP, import the original alpha layer and then flip the both of them.
...Next, I'm saving it as a .DDS / DXT5.

If anyone has any pointers, I would appreciate the end to my frustration.

Hi Oleboy

I understand the frustration. The painting was always easy for me - its the application I have always needed the help with by the masters who frequen these forums (thanks guys)

Im actually no technical expert but if you take a screenshot of the plane in FSX and also a screenshot of the s1 s t and pm me then i could take a look. Usually what you paint and save as a bmp and then convert to a dds is what you get - alphas (the shine) does not get affected on this aircraft.

Alertnatively you could compare by opening the original aircraft dds files (even mine you have loaded and Dans originals) using a free program called dxt bmp from ..http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/DXTBmp-Download-53836.html

Hope that helps.

Meanwhile - I have done most of the stars!!

Going good. Slow, but good. I'm the biggest fuss butt when it comes to paints. The wife has always said I'm anal. Do ya think she's right?

A little bit more to do and this one will be ready.
....Mean while, a little story, and a few pictures ;)

15467

I’m in the parking lot of Jacob Shapiro Elementary School in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, with my friend, Dean. “Come on! Get it started,” yells Dean. I’m holding a little red, white, and blue control-line biplane in my left hand and trying not to get the fingers on my right hand bit off as I release the black prop from its spring-loaded starter. The right amounts of glow-plug heat and model airplane fuel finally ignite in about 80 decibels of noise. I release the little wailing beast, and Dean’s Cox Pitts takes to the air for the first time.

The reason for the flashback?

Sitting in the grass in front of me on this fine 2004 Florida spring day is a life-size replica of the Cox Pitts. Paul Lopez was born and raised in California. Some of Paul’s earliest aviation memories are from the Mojave air show. A friend of Paul’s father was an executive at Cox, and Paul was able to meet the legendary Art Scholl and see him fly his Cox-sponsored Chipmunk.

Paul started taking flying lessons when he was 18. He washed airplanes in exchange for flight time in a Cessna 152 at Van Nuys airport. After getting his private he flew for two years on, two years off—money dictated the amount of flying he could do. Finally in 1997 he got to the point where he could start flying full time. He got his tailwheel endorsement in a J-3 Cub in Andover, New Jersey, for the sole purpose of being able to start flying aerobatics. He started aerobatic training in a Decathlon at Sussex. Once he got a taste of aerobatics, Paul wanted to fly the Pitts. He first flew an S-2A and later participated in some northeast region competitions in an S-2A.

A job transfer moved him to Florida, and he soon learned there were no aerobatic airplanes in the Tampa area to rent. Giving up flying was not an option, so the natural decision was to buy an airplane.

While doing some spin training with Rich Stowell, Paul asked him about buying a Pitts. At Sun ’n Fun in 1999 Rich introduced Paul to Debbie Rihn-Harvey. It so happened that she had two S-1Ts for sale, and they were in his price range. He went out to LaPorte, Texas, and checked them out. In June 1999 he flew back to Florida in his very own Pitts. N614GT was formerly owned by the late Glenn Frick and was blue and yellow with the traditional starburst paint scheme with a checkered bottom.

After flying the Pitts for a few years the fabric was ratted out. Paul started out just wanting to re-cover the wings. After getting some quotes he realized it made more financial sense to re-cover the entire airplane. After removing the fabric, one thing led to another, and Paul decided to rebuild the entire airplane.

Herb Clark of Weirsdale, Florida, did the rebuild.

He replaced the trailing edges, fixed the ribs, replaced sheet metal, and did the re-cover. Paul was grounded from May 2003 until February 2004 while Herb did his thing. With a blank canvas of new fabric Paul needed to figure out what he wanted his “new” Pitts to look like.

He had fond memories of playing with the Cox model as a boy, and one day he and friend Randy Ott were surfing eBay looking for an original. The idea hit both of them at once—that was the paint scheme for his real Pitts. Paul researched the color scheme on Art Scholl’s S-2A and the original Cox models to get the most accurate reproduction as possible.

N614GT is powered by a 230-hp Monty Barrett-built Lycoming AEIO- 360 with 10-to-1 pistons, a four-intoone exhaust, and cold-air induction. A Hartzell constant-speed prop spins up front. Paul has flown the airplane about 20 hours since the rebuild. He says,
“It flies great, a lot better than when I originally bought it. The pilot just needs work.” He competed in Sportsman at the Keystone, Florida, contest hosted by the Embry-Riddle Sport Aviation Club, as well as Sebring where he placed third over all, and Hampton, Georgia, where he placed second over all. His future plans are to have fun with the airplane, finishing the year in Sportsman. Next year will come Intermediate and ultimately Advanced. Paul is a member of IAC Chapter 23.

Paul enjoys people’s reactions to his airplane. “Everyone loves it. I see them walking by and acting like they have the control lines and are flying the toy!”

Note: The under side of the wings are a close guess based on the only legible photo I could find. Which was not much. It's real close though!!

I've come quite a ways on two repaints. Not meaning to tease anyone but there are just a few more adjustments on N614GT. Having got a bit frustrated with N614GT, I moved on to another paint. G-BSRH. This one is essentially completed aside from some minor alignments and other small things here and there. You'll see the areas in the pictures that need adjustment.

Take note of the new tires/side wall textures.

A bit of real-world useless trivia on a couple of aeroplanes mentioned in the last few posts; I was offered G-OKAY at a snip during her rebuild in 2005, but couldn't gather enough pocket money together so went for G-STYL instead. Nice aeroplane, had her until late 2008 but alas, ran out of the said pocket money once more. My Pitts instructor used to have G-BLAG at Popham before he moved onto an S-2B, BLAG being by all accounts a really nice example of type.

If anyone would consider doing G-STYL I'd be really grateful. Its a simple scheme of a particular cherry red with white 5-pointed stars on the tops of both wings (note the stars on the botton wing are slightly inboard [i.e. dont line up with the stars on the top wing] of the wing.

....and G-LITZ http://jetphotos.net/showphotos.php?aircraft=Pitts%20S1E%20Special

I'm not real sure, the graphic name on the front might be a real chore to replicate. Worse case is the paint won't have it.

Thanks Dan

That graphic on the nose has been a real clincher while trying to obtain the correct appearance of the paint. I searched all over the web and could not find anything better. So, I resorted in re-drawing it all while using the smaller picture as reference. It will suffice.

I've been mulling it over KD. If good enough pictures can be found..the bigger, the better (start searching), I'll have a look at them and determine the decision. But that one will definitely take some time.

G-REAP is another I've looked at doing. Or, should I say attempting.

Heck of a way to spend a day. Most of what you see done here at this point was most of a Saturday (off and on) The fuse is almost completed after a few adjustments. The prop spinner looks pretty nifty when you run it up through the rpms.
....Then I have to figure out the alpha channels. The areas from the reg# forward are to be the look of polished aluminum. That continues to the nose and spinner. This is going to be interesting. I've never messed with the alpha channel to that much of a degree. Then the wings and tail feathers will get their attention. I like the challenge.

Here's a few shots of the progress.

This little aerobatic bird is intriguing. I haven't figured out why yet. I've come to realize that in the United Kingdom there is a bold statement on these fine particular aircraft. So that tells my fascination if any of you wondered. Germany has several descent schemes too. But nothing can compare to the boldness of the UK folks when it comes to showmanship in the air.

Superb work Oleboy :salute:

Oleboy - the file has been removed. Are you going to repost? This is so very similar to the colour scheme from Skip Volk's beautiful Chipmunk, isn't it? Perhaps you flew R/C and built the Sig kit? This was my all-time favorite livery for R/C aerobatic aircraft, and I would dearly love to have this Pitts as you have done it here. Sweet!

Edit: So I went looking on the weeeb and discovered it is from a genuine Pitts: I guess they used Skip's scheme. You've done a real nice job! Many thanks!

Paul,

I apologize for the file being deleted. The reason I took it down was due to it not being completed the way I intended. Meaning, I was having troubles tracking everything down on the templates to paint it as it was in the RW. I've got everything sorted now and will be getting back to work on that scheme. I actually have five paints in progress. Four of those need to be gone through and finalized before I release them.
...If someone who downloaded it would like to repost here, that's fine by me.

As for the look of N614GT, it will be spot on to the best of my ability and the reference material I have. I went as far as sending an email to several different sources for different aircraft. Though I haven't heard anything as of yet. I'm hopeful.

Now to get down to the Skinnin room for some reading. I need to teach myself how to do polished aluminum.

I'll post more pictures as I progress.

...A couple more shots of the progress. G-BXTI has a nice pair of pants and the blue ribbon (pain stakingly) wrapped round her belly.

Next comes the red ribbon towards the back, then the stars wrapped around those. Then I move back to the cowl ( I needed a break from that and worked on other areas) and get that area finished. Oh, and the tail/elevator and bottom of the wings.

I've got all the painting finished. I'm playing with more modding and enhancements here and there. I'm also tweaking the alpha channel (notice the tires and tail gear have no reflection) so it looks as realistic as I can possibly make it appear at my end. The thing with the paint that took me the longest amount of time is where all the paint wraps up and over the nose and through the cabane supports. What a headache that was!! I'm just glad the laying paint and lines part is over.

My hats off to those excelling my experience....thanks for your patience in doing what you do to bring us all so many paints. :ernae: Although it does get easier the more you do.

Note: This set of pictures is showing an anomaly of jaggedness in the repaint. Why all I can figure is my video card...because previous pictures had nothing of the sort when testing in the simulator. Now it does. Dust bunnies? It could use blown out.

Anyway, here are a few more shots. Bare with me just a bit longer. It may be Sunday/Monday when I get it uploaded as I have a family reunion tomorrow.

Due to a denial of service attack and a following complete loss of primary London internet feed, I am afraid that our website http://www.addictive.it (http://www.addictive.it/) is currently down. It being a bank holiday weekend, and sadly our internet provider having been bought by OPAL (seemingly like almost everyone elses in the UK!!) , who do not seem to be in any hurry to look into the problem to correct it, tell me that they will likely not do so until at least Tuesday or even Wednesday. It is called progress folks. http://static.avsim.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif

As for the SP1 update, I have no clue what it entails. But Dan did say he had a few surprises for us.

OleBoy

Right from the start I notice that the placeholder for the external panel, is now a full panel to match the 3D. And it looks very nice. The ground handling has been adjusted and you now have better control. The pilots are now animated. Visually, and texture-wise, I don't see any changes from the repaint template...so that's a good thing. It also appears that there is a better "smoke" effect.

I looked for the fuel pump mentioned, but not very closely. It was just a quick flight to check my paints. So anyone with other issues aside from what I mention will have to check it out for themselves.

Get the update at the Addictive Simulations website via fresh installer download.

Thanks!!
....Tell you what, my reason for doing foreign reg's are due to them being very different, vibrant and really stand out among the most. If you'd like, I will consider doing any repaints..but they have to be unique to get my attention. If there are any in particular that you feel fit the bill, shoot me a PM with some reg #s and I'll have a peek. Who knows ;)

Well done Oleboy - that must have taken some patience :salute:

When the paint kit is available I hope someone does Betty Skelton's S-1 "Lil Stinker". I saw her fly it in a air show many years ago and her performance always stuck in my mind.

Paul

PutPut, this one I will be happy to do!! I would appreciate some help tracking good photos. I found one, HUGE, although black-n-white picture. It will work but I'll need to know the true colors.
....Once I get the reference material rounded up, Betty Skelton's S-1 "Lil Stinker" will be a done deal. Saying that loosely of course :wavey:

I notice that the reg# is N22E. I have a few pictures of the first Pitts. Hanging wing-top down that's in a museum. Can't see much though..

Just a little OT. Very cool!!

Slow but sure, I'm gaining. And learning the paint templates better. Getting the nose stripes to look right has been a challenge in my patience. One more slight adjustment on the back-bottom stripe and I can move forward and start the wheel pants. That is, if I don't crack the whiskey bottle first!!

I sure like this paint scheme. Pictures don't do it justice.

Sorry, unless it is my own design (which this may be) all my paints are released as depicted in the RW.

My handy work of drawing up the graphics turned out pretty darn good I think. It's legible.

Of course she needs a bit of pampering here and there..and the colors, what does everyone think..are they close?

*Note that my graphics card is not the greatest.
