....there is an FSX patch, as well as alternate glass texture available for the VC for use in FSX. I also deleted the smoking engine due to FPS constraints in FASX... Other than that, it's a BEAUTY!

Alternatively, if you do not have the port-over in FSX already this is a package that installs the model in FSX complete with fixes, thumbnails, and 5 liveries. Just unzip in your FSX root folder and you're good to go.

I confirm the plane works almost perfectly in FSX Acceleration.
I said almost because I'm not sure that 100% of the systems are working, however I could not spot any problems until now.
It's a true beauty in FSX, a must-have for anybody flying in DirectX9 mode.

Another important thing is that the virtual cockpit is extremely detailled and very clickable. The complete engine start sequence can be done from the VC.

Strange? I downloaded that file, followed the directions to run the Bat files. It worked, except my glass is opaque from inside. I see reflections from inside the cockpit but can't see out.

I had to do a total IFR T/O and climb out. LOL

Thank you Jan!

I tried the earlier fixes, but never really got it working (except on my laptop..).
This one did the trick!
It looks great in FSX:

The earlier fixes worked fine for me. I put them all together and wrote the batches for easy conversion, after all.

Tried everything about three to four times and it worked fine.

Note that it only converts the liveries from the stock model and the livery pack. Any add-on liveries have to be converted manually!!!

How was your landing ? :)

You should *not* run the batch file, John. All included texture files are already converted to dds. I suggest to remove the complete F-86 folder from your FSX aircraft folder and unzip 'sf86fsx_fixup.zip' in your root FSX folder again. 'Yes' to all to Overwrite.

That should remove the IFR training tent. :d

@ Paul and Heywoood : did you just unzip 'sf86fsx_fixup.zip' into your FSX root folder ? Did you not have a port-over of our F-86 in FSX already ? Seems that 'f86jv_rect.part.dds' and 'f86_rect.dds' are missing from your ...SF8_F-86EF_Sabre\texture.shared folder. Can you check please ?

You can add the effects back by going into the aircraft.cfg and activating lights number 8,9, and 10 under the [lights] section.

Make sure that you have the effects Fx_SF86_TotalXaust_max_Orange, fx_SF86_TotalXaust_max_Blue_B, and fx_SF86_TotalXaust_low_Orange in your FSX Effects folder. Should be there from the install, but if you don't end up with engine smoke, you can go hunting for those.

Any guesses from Jan as to when we might see an update on the Sabre? Hope all is going well with MAAMSIM!

Beware: The exhaust effects are severely harming performance.

To activate = To remove the "//"s.

skyblazer3
July 8th, 2010, 11:57
I think it's worth removing the "//" in front of the exhaust effects in the aircraft.cfg and testing out the frame impact on your machine. I used to have terrible frame-lag from those effects, but once I upgraded my graphics card and processor I can look at 4 F-86s blazing smoke with no frame-lag. I keep my frames locked at 28FPS.

Cheers,

Chris

Another possibility would be just to replace the original engine smoke effect by another one, one that would be less FPS-hungry...

AIRCANUCK,

I previously wrote that you could activate the smoke by removing the "//" in front of lights 8,9, and 10. I must have a different aircraft.cfg than you do. Looking at yours, you want to remove the "//" in front of lights 9,10, and 11.

Thanks, Chris, working hard on our first native FSX puppy. Actually first TWO native FSX puppies... :mixedsmi:

The significant Sabre update is nearly finished (see screenie in my post #16) but sadly got (very much) delayed. Mainly FSX is to blame ( see above ) but also Rob is very busy with other things so the slightly altered hardwing FD is quite overdue.

With a bit of luck we might still be able to release it.

I can't check FSX myself at the moment. FS9 has a slider with which you can set the amount of light effects. Check if it's still there in FSX ?.. ( i actually don't think so.... ? )

Also there are two sets of '9,10,11' light effects. Did you try them both ?

Been quite a while, i can't exactly remember what these particular exhaust effects look like.... We tried a LOT of 'em ! There's various sorts of smoke, thick or thin, 3 sorts of exhaust 'glow' depending on 3 stages of rpm, plus exhaust 'heat shimmering' effects. What exactly are you looking for ? Did you use the model in FS9 ?

Yessir, new external texture sets down to the last pixel. All handpaint this time. Comes with repaint kit in psd format, lots of seperate layers for rivets, panellining, weathering (all light and/or dark), legends, paint chips, smoke, oil stains, dirt, etc and what not. Next to hard wing ( with removable inner wing root tip to allow armament door/step to be opened ) a.o. redesigned nose section with wider air inlet and more pronounced 'lip' and 3D radio stack in VC. Also optional 1950/60's RAF pilot figure. Here's a couple more piccies although getting bit long in the tooth because of temporary suspension of finishing up the update.

On my PC the landing lights on this plane are extremely bright. Like "blot out everything in their path, triangle-of-doom" bright. I have tried changing the effect that it uses in the aircraft.cfg file but I either get the exact same thing or nothing (lights on the plane still come on, just nothing on the ground). Is anyone else experiencing this, and if so is there a known tweak?

It is not a big issue but it is the only real one for me in an otherwise gorgeous aircraft. I love flying this thing.

** Side note for anyone who flies with textures of Canadair Sabres most of the time (RCAF, Luftwaffe, etc.) In the aircraft.cfg under [General] I changed the type entry to atc_type=Canadair and ATC recognizes it, at least it does with EditVoicePack but default may as well because of the CRJ. It won't recognize CL-13 but being called Canadair F86 is better then North American if you are flying one built in Montreal ;)

2) using DXTBMP set the alpha for BOTH f86jv_rectpart and f86jv_rect to:<o:p></o:p>
85,85,85 for normal reticule or 0,0,0 for no reticule.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Viola, normal transparent target reticle.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
If I ever get a few moments from school, I plan to build a CS Weapons mod to keep the S8 effects and reticle but use the CS AI shoot down to chase those pesky MiG 15's. Anyone tempted to build a Korea timescape scenery similar to the awesome Vietnam set? An aircraft this good deserves a place of its own to call home.<o:p></o:p>

What was your airspeed? If you get above 185 knots IAS before they are up they will jam. You will top that very quickly on a full throttle takeoff.

If I remember correctly they mention in the pilots notes and caution you to retract the landing gear and flaps before you reach 160 knots IAS ( or there abouts ) to avoid any damage due to excessive airflow. This A/C is about as close as you can get to the real McCoy !!

For anyone else that has the reticle issue it is easy to fix:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
1) rename f86jv_rect.part. to 'f86jv_rectpart. (remove the period between rect and part)(in the shared textures folder)

<o:p>That's a great 'point' you make there, Dan ! Wow!! That pesky recticle has been buggin me a lot! No clue why i didn't notice that period myself, i never use periods in my texture naming..... :blind:</o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>What made you see 'the point'...... ?</o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>Thanks a lot, mate, you are one dirty Crew Chief ! :salute: :ernae:</o:p>

It's published at 185, but really you have until 200 knots before you loose hydroloics. They can be reset by slowing below 200 knots, and right clicking the vertical toggle switch behind the throttle.

I think there is also a speed at which the flaps will jam -- but I pull those up at the same time I get the gear.

Cheers

Is there by any chance, a layered paint kit for this lovely creature? I have the old photoreal one but the awesome camo skins here were clearly not done with that.

Regards and thanks to all

Well ... as far as I can see, Jan has cheated a little with his RAF paint in post #40 (for he has made use of the not-ready-yet camo paint kit), but my Luftwaffe JC+106 and RCAF "Bluenose" 707 actually were done on the photoreal blank metal templates.
Some of my early works... :wiggle:

Good day to all you good fellas who made this fantastic F-86 Sabre, and it's the most fun freeware aircraft I have ever flown.
Also all the tips have been helpful in getting it to work in FSX for me. Thanks to everyone.:salute:
I would like to maybe do a repaint of the G-SABR that I saw at an airshow a few years ago, the oldest still-flying F-86 (I believe)

Is that the one at Duxford? If so, I believe it is the only A model flying, and not only the oldest F-86 flying, but the oldest original jet aircraft flying today.

I agree.. I fly the Section F8 Sabre about 2 hours per week as part of a virtual aerobatic team... it is one of the most amazing and detailed aircraft ever made for a simulator.... such a treat to have this bird. I can't believe it is freeware, but I'm glad it is so that many can enjoy it.

I went over all 75 points of the panel notes ... can't seem to find any reference to cockpit lighting. Anyone know?

There is an Extension Light on the right hand side of the cockpit and a console flood light. (Section 1-7: F86 FOM)

If this is what you were referring at ;)

I can move the extension light - but there is no light being emittted.

Regarding the console light - that's what I'm after - can't find the reference anywhere. I have looked in the instrument guide here: http://www.sectionf8.com/instrument_panel_ref.html

the Pilot Flight Operating Instructions and Pilot Checklist here: http://www.sectionf8.com/download.html

I don't see a section 1.7 ....

Apologize for my thickness ...

dl

ps - yes, am wondering about that "Fury" also ....

The cockpit light switch is a bit hidden indeed, dl.... One of the many tricks a semi '3D image' plays on us while viewing it on a 2D monitor screen....

There is however no excuse for you not finding the reference to it on the '2D' Instrument Panel Ref. html....:)

Once you're there, click the 'Special Clickspots and Mouseover Areas' section at the top. You'll then find it on 'Instrument Panel (VC)', section 5.

Lower your eyepoint a bit ( Shift/Return ) and look at the right side cockpit wall, just underneath the canopy defog tubes.

cheers,
jan

Switch found (and as far as I can tell in right position) - nothing happens .... see screen shots.

Incidentally, only the left-most switch works of the three. Also of note, if I select cockpit 2D panel view mode, the panel can illuminate (in fact, stays on lit regardless of light switch settings). Double checked all contents of panel - contains the sf86fsx_fixup gauges etc.

thanks,

dl

Where's that Navy Fury repaint?

Mike Puckett has a number of Fury paints for the S8 F-86, just put his name in the search engine over at http://www.flightsim.com/file.php?cm=SEARCH

I'm guessing his question, like mine earlier about that Fury, relates to the fact that Puckett didn't do any Fury schemes in dark blue. That's why he's asking.
