Some used catapults from escort ships and jeep carriers I think. Similar to what the British did with their 'expendable' sea hurricanes.

Technically, the Wildcat should be launched conventionally from a period carrier. We've added catapult gear (invisible) to make use of the modern Acceleratio carrier's cats if you wish.:engel016:

Wulf190 is correct. In the U.S. Navy (I have no info on the British), Wildcats did not need catapults even on escort carriers. However, they were designed with the necessary equipment, and they were required to practice catapults. They (at least on one ship) referred to the catapult as the "turkey shooter" and complained about being forced to use it. My paternal grandfather served on an escort carrier, and I have accounts from his ship (U.S.S. Gambier Bay, loved seeing it in your pictures gradyhappyg).

I plan to pick up a Wildcat sometime, but money is being spent on flight lessons (non-simulated) right now.

Most of the later war escort carrier fighters were probably FM2's rather than F4F's. A little more power, taller rudder etc. The "Wilder Wildcat". It was fairly common to catapult Avengers and Corsairs from the "Jeep Carriers" as a larger combat load could be carried, at the expense of slower launch cycle.

Good luck with the flight training! Just returned from a six day float flying/camping trip North of the Denali Hwy in my Supercub. Alaska's a great place to fly!

Peanutbutter and jelly!! :icon_lol: I used Formation Setup for this, but that program somtimes makes the AI plane go 300 knots, even though you told it to go 150, so I had a heck of a time catching this Zero in the F4F!

PRB
July 7th, 2010, 19:37
Noticed a tiny anomaly in the F4F-4. The F4F-3 and the Martlet do not have this issue. See the pic? The top marker of the ADI, which should point straight up when the wings are level, jumps from straight up to about ten degrees left. This happens from about 0.00001 degrees left roll. The marker stays stuck in this position until the plane actually rolls to greater than the degrees indicated by the wayward marker, whereupon all the marks are synced up again and the entire gauge behaves as expected. When on deck, or flying wings level, the practical effect is that the top marker jumps rapidly from top to left as the plane deviates from slightly left roll to level or slightly right roll. So that's it, my bug report for the week. If this is all that's wrong with it I'd say you've hit a home run.

Hi

Has anyone else tried the paint kit? At first i thought it was because i had not fliped the images or something.

The same happens using their "paintkit test aircraft"

http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq119/GAJIT/wip2-6.jpg
Its a shame but I doubt if i have the patience to try to work it out - why has someone re-invented the wheel with this paintkit?

bazzar
July 12th, 2010, 02:58
Gajit, nobody has "re-invented" anything.

Here are the two fuse2 files, USS Enterprise and the Paintkit version. You will se that they are identical. Fuse2 does NOT cover the wings on any of these aircraft, including the paintkit. That would be impossible.

I would venture to say that somehow you have the files screwed up. Perhaps you have not flipped the tile inverted before making a dds? Or something else maybe. Either way we can't make the paintkit any simpler mate, it is just the same layered files as the main package. Method is pretty straightforward - use the template for that particular tile, do your paint, flatten the image and invert, upside down. Make a dds and add it to the new folder for the texture.

By the way the files that cover the wings are AH_WildcatLeftwing_t and AH_WildcatRightWing_t in ALL models including the paintkit. we can't make things plainer than that.

Either way we can't make the paintkit any simpler mate, .

Hi Baz

Having successfully done quite a lot of repaints over the last year I can assure you that you could!

I will try flipping them first but I think that my convim program had been doing that.

bazzar
July 12th, 2010, 04:05
Well, looking at your pics, you most certainly have the fuse2 and fuse1 textures upside down.
Why not send me your files so that i can see what the problem is.

gajit
July 12th, 2010, 04:40
Hi Baz

Your flipping advice before saving as bmps has worked. Not sure why the tool did not flip them properly for me. I must also apologise re the accusation of the files being mixed. In my feeble excuse I can only say that upside down the fuse files do look like wing textures on the USS Enterprise paint. Again please accept my apology. Not sure if i can remove that from my post.

May I thank you for your great patentice with me and your professionalism. I hope to complete this one later.

Hi Bazzar,

Have you used some default DC-3 sounds in your package? Just curious as it sounded like it from the preview video. Also, when you lower the gear, does the handle turn 34 times to simulate the hand cranked gear!?

bazzar
July 12th, 2010, 14:31
Room is very tight there on that tile Gajit. I'm afraid it takes a bit of jiggling about ot get that part right. Lowering the number a little and also lowering the darker tone will probably fix it. It has to be spot on to work there.

Glad you got that sorted.

bazzar
July 12th, 2010, 14:36
Some of the mid-range sounds are indeed based on the stock items as in my opinion they did a good job there.

No the gear crank doesn't need the multiple turns, we thought that might not be too popular!

Can you imagine bringing in a sick aeroplane in the middle of a battle and having to crank that thing to get your wheels down? Apparently it got harder at each end of its range and it was relatively easy to forget to lock the gear down which is done by cranking until you can't any more and then flicking over the lock switch. Great stuff for a rookie!

Hi Bazzar,

another question - How does the Martlet & Wildcat compare to the Spitfire Boxed pack?
Currently flitting 'tween the two. Cant Decide.

EDIT: Does the Wildcat come with a load out panel?

bazzar
July 12th, 2010, 20:44
The Wildcat comes with models for drop tanks as well as clean but no loadouts. The reason being we wanted to reflect the extra range for the tanked version, hence the different models.

In this pack are:

F4F-4 Wildcat folding wings six guns
F4F-3 Wildcat fixed wings four guns
Grumman Martlet Mk1 fixed wings four guns, British gunsight etc.
Grumman Martlet MkIV folding wings, six guns, British gunsight etc.

Hope this helps.

Someone asked if the F4F-4 was launched by using a cat. Yes from jeep carriers such as the Long Island. The 1st F4Fs to land at Henderson Field Guadalcanal were launched that way from the Long Island 200NM out. Most of the pilots were fresh out of flight school and some had never flown an F4F-4 and some had about 10 hours in them. They learned to fly the aircraft on the way to Henderson Field. The next day VMF-223 was in combat. 19 of thies aircraft landed on Aug 20 1942. When they left on Oct. 11 1942 to return home they had lost 9 pilots KIA and 3 WIA.Out of the 19 F4Fs flown in only three were left flyable.

I have just purchased the Wildcat, and WOW!, have you outdone yourselfs! It is amazing in all ways - the sound, gunfire, graphic detail and functionality it is all there! Just a few quick niggles:
a. There is a giant click spot all over the cockpit for elevator trim specifically below and around the pilots seat.
b. Is the supercharger lever functional.

I :salute: you for this excellent product. It was well worth my $39.99. if you can recreate this ambiance in the DC-3 I will certainly buy it and and the BoB pack over other devs aircraft. To anyone who was hesitating to buy this; It is well worth your money.

Thanks for the kind words mate. JF have a fairly rigorous upgrade policy so usually what we do is wait for al;l the complaints to pour in :>) then we do some remedials and issue a patch or two.

The Supercharger is non-functional at present but not to say won't be for ever. Unfortunately we can't lock the primer back in at the moment either but it is on the list of things to impro9ve if we can.

Glad you like these, we put a lot of work into them to get them the way we wanted.

However I still marvel at how great your tubby little fighter is. It may not be the fastest, or the most agile, but I think it has character and it is better than the A2A P-40! Good work!

That looks excellent. This paint kit is not as user friendly as others (some weird things happen to matching lined with breaks in places) so if you can do that - you can do any!! :salute::salute:

It's getting there but lining up everything is being a major pain in the old yoo hoo. LOL!

Wow - excellent work Gradyhappy

I have got this far but as you are doing so well, and it would be easy to convert your paint to also cover this this one, I am not going to bother completing as (life is too short!! LOL) I have some others in mind.

Hi Gajit,

Are you able to make a fictional repaint for me? Do you think you could skin an F4F-4 in Grumman Hellcat colors with and without operation Overlord stripes?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Baz,

Just one more niggle; the VSI stops at + - 5000FPM

Since the vision is so restrictive it is useless for carrier ops the reason for me getting it, the nose over on catching a wire can easily be fixed, finding the carrier is the major problem with all those 2 ft wide glazing bars so its back to the old FDG donation ware Martlet.

I hate VC's, hate it even more if there is no work around

Open the canopy, side slip it during the approach like the real pilots did. Wildcat was known for it's restrictive vision. And get a TrackIR, life will be much better! I can't imagine flying without a VC.........?

Have you tried cycling through the VC views? There's a 2D "flying panel, a "straight ahead" out through the screen view and others. Externally there's an "approach" view down the side of the fuse looking forward there's a tail view looking forward.

As a last resort in 2D mode, hit your Shift/1 key and have a clear vision of the target.

If none of that is any good for you, blame the aeroplane. We have pilots who flew these for real as customers and they don't have any complaints.

I agree. Flight sim is a simulator so it simulates much of the reality of flying - including the hard bits!!

There are loads of "arcade games" if you want an easy life.

Hi,

If you having trouble seeing out, put some virtual pillows under your virtual yoo hoo!:p::d

July 17th, 2010, 00:57
LOL You can also use the view shift options in the vc by using a combination of right control key or right shift key and the return key and backspace keys - sorry but i dont have fsx open at the moment to tell you which combination gives you a higher view point (virtual pillows!!).

Its Cntrl+Backspace for down,
Cntrl+Enter for up.

Hi SADT

Happy to take a look - depends on the scheme as the paintkit is not the most userfriendly. Which one?

Hi Gajit,

Do you think you could do a Spitfire style RAF camo with and without Overlord stripes?

I could but im not sure how different it would look to the Martletts included in the pack.

Perhaps someone else will do it for you. :salute:

I have the Pack B and have two areas of the floor I can see the ground thru. They are aft of the rudder pedals just forward of the seat edge. Anyone else seeing these. I have flown at least three of the planes and they all have them. Plane flies great and no other apparent problems.

They are observation windows in the cockpit floor. Check the exterior, you will see them there.

Easy to make a comment like that if you dont know. I recently moaned that there is no throttle on the Rise of Flight DH2 only to be told off as there never was one on the real thing!!

bazzar
July 19th, 2010, 14:27
Ahh yes, "blipping". Makes you realise how advanced aeroplanes like the SE5a were in their day with full control over throttle and mixture and a magneto crank that could start a healthy engine without swinging the prop.

Well honestly I had to take a break from it while I still had a few strands of hair left got a lil frustrated tying to line up certain textures mainly the tail ID numbers and wing stripes not that I am quitting or giving up, just decided to finish another paint that I was working on when I started this one. It's finished now so if all goes well should have the cat done sometime next week.
BTW you are right not an easy paint kit to work with. A few shots to show where I left off and the what I did to get some of my painting confidence back.

Great work :salute:

I hate "inconsiderate" paint kits that dont supply guide lines where there are invisable breaks. Your doing really well.
