Note; This is graphic heavy, I hope SOH will allow all my Photobucket screens. I have downsized the screens to 1024 width from their original 1280, so that no so much scrolling is required.

Since the UTX thread began, I had wanted to do a comparison test. It is easy to reinstall default FSX textures through GEX and disable all UTX texture through their engine, so I did so in each.

I took screens in FSX Default, then installed the GEX textures first and did a comparison with them. I next enabled the UTX textures and took some screens.

I highlighted my Info Text in the upper left for frame rate comparisons. Bare in mind no defragmenting or closing of programs in the task bar were done during this test.

FS Water Configurator was used for water colors in all but the FSX Default.

I flew the Champ throughout and kept all in the daylight. One note and a screen showing the road adjustments in UTX, uncheck all the Add Auto Imprint in UTX's drop down Road Texture Surface Modification. This doesn't affect frame rates, but they look so false, particularly at night, with the moving road traffic UTX adds. Throughout all I did keep the FSGenesis 9.6-meter DEM mesh and set the Texture resolution at 10-meters in the FSX Scenery settings.

Now on with the comparison. Default FSX textures:

Note the rather bland texture colors and lack of traffic and roads (though there is traffic sporadically) in FSX Default.

After installing the GTX textures, my world (USA) is a bit greener and darker with more power lines. Frame rates hit is negligible.

Re-enabling UTX really puts FSX to life, adding all major and minor road and traffic everywhere, even on main two-lane roads. But here is a hit of frame rates of 1 to 2 fps. Defragmenting my drive with O & O 11 and shutting down the task bar items not used will net that back to the set 20 for me. Weather will take a big chunk out if there are lots of clouds. I kept all Clear and visibility Unlimited for the test.

Hope this little comparison shows you the functions of each. Of the two, I'd say that UTX is more bang for buck than GTX, it enhances your sim so much.

The FPS hit is probably from the extra traffic from the added roads. I've never really noticed an FPS hit with traffic off, but, especially if you have every road type installed, you can run into some road heavy areas where the amount of cars will just grind your sim to a halt! Try the Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham, UK on 100% traffic, and you'll see what I'm saying...
