View Full Version : Threads deleted ??

Toastmaker

It appears that some threads that get closed. . . also get deleted (as if they never existed?)

I can understand closing threads that get out of bounds if necessary, but why delete them ? This prevents members from seeing the nature of the controversy as examples of what's considered verboten.

Some threads, even after being closed, are still so controversial or offensive that they are removed to maintain the standards of the site.

I deleted one the other night at the request of one of the posters. The thread quickly became a big misunderstanding and it was decided that keeping the thread open for all to see would be counterproductive.

Moe closed and deleted one last night because it became a war of words.

The one deleted this morning (UK time) was well within the rules before it was closed. I didn't see how the SOH Facebook one developed a couple of days ago as I went to bed. The next morning it was gone.

Close them if you must but to expunge them completely smacks of censorship. I know this is a free site and we don't pay to subscribe and therefore have no voice at all but it's all getting a little bit like the Freemason's around here :costum:

they get moved to a private forum

If something is provocative the best thing to do is avoid it. We are from many different countries and cultures. What may not be offensive to one might be offensive to another. There are some common sense issues that outright provoke others to wrath so why start it? That is an easy guideline

Having to sift through every post by certain members because they habitually stir up as much controversy as they possibly can isn't an easy task. There are more worthwhile things for the site staff to be doing.

sadly there are a few permanent banned people

if it came down to that

all the senior staff have been here for many years

I don't wanna burst any of you guys bubble, but the threads I close or remove are not suppose to be either in the Newshawk or at this site. The attack against members is also a one way ticket to getting the thread closed. I don't like to close a thread but when I start getting emails concerning attacks, threats against others it time to end it. You guys know the rules here so WHY keep testing us out. I cannot believe for the life of me why some members love to start problems and then keep the fire going. This site is suppose to be a fun place to visit and meet other members....not a site to see who can piss the furtherest.

I will make one post and one post only;

Regarding 6297J's ban, banning a member over what is clearly a perfectly innocent joke in my opinion is innappropriate. 6297J has contributed a lot to the site, and his posts are always informative. Banning such a member immediately degrades the quality of the forum.

I wonder if 6297J donated money to the site? He certainly contributed enough in terms of content.

In anticipated response for the 'admins decision is final and for the benefit of the site,' SOH, or any other forum on the planet, is nothing without its members. Banning established members, who form the cornerstone of the forum, is completely self-destructive.

I appreciate that I am not an admin, and that this is a dictatorship not a democracy, and like I said I will not offer any further opinion beyond this post. I'll certainly miss 6297J's contributions however, let's hope other well established members don't get banned over such trivial matters, else in a couple of days time there will be no-one left.

Quick edit: This is of course assuming the ban was based on his activities in this thread alone.

I understand you are trying to keep the peace, but does bullying your members really achieve anything? Certainly 629J7 has said some things that were out of line, but I believe there was a fair amount of provocation on the part of a certain moderator. I think that's where the "nightstick" quote came from.

But Skittles, this is a democracy. The staff and admin discuss and vote on things all the time. :icon_lol: Seriously though? I think members have more say here than we like to think.

I don't know why people want to fall on their swords for 'freedom of speech' and other stuff on internet message boards and forums. If all the private forums were to erase their rules and moderation, they would (every single one) turn into 4chan and/or porn. Sometimes I regret not being able to go off on people on the internet, but I'm glad that others can't constantly go off on me when I'm trying to have a conversation with like-minded individuals.

We truly need to be saved from ourselves. Human beings are very simple creatures.

I agree with Henry. Having spent a lot of time here I have come to recognize a few things...

The "personalities" of many of the other "full time" participants.
The threads that are destined to be locked.
The fact that almost always in a doomed thread a moderator will first post some sort of warning prior to closure.

Most important...figuring out personally that nothing posted here is worth blowing out any of my arteries over.

It seems to me that in the few occasions where someone got the sack here it was certainly not done without a lot of advance warning. Additionally, as Henry stated the moderating team uses a private forum to discuss issues like this. As much as I would be interested in the other side of this story I trust that they know what they are doing.

Time to get back to work on my project...:salute:

By whom ?? You make an interesting point but at the same time it could be said that we humans are the most complex of creatures known, so far. This is why forum communications can be so inaccurate sometimes. The individual nuanced perceptions of things like humor, sarcasm, irony, etc. can be received or lost by various people depending on their sensibilities, personalities or cultural experiences.

I'm sorry to have seen a member get banned in a thread I started. . . sorry I asked.

629J7 managed to cross from a grey area into the black zone, not only in the thread concerned but in several others.
In this case, 'joke' or not, it was a step too far.
Mods and Admins are not inclined or encouraged to 'bully' members, however, there are members who seem intent on pushing ever closer to acceptable behaviour and baiting the SOH staff.
Any decisions pertaining to banning a member, be it for a week or for ever, are NEVER taken lightly and subject to discussion among all the team.
I think I can speak on behalf of the entire group when I say we would rather spend our time doing 'other activities' we enjoy instead of watching for the regular dramas to burst into flame.
A little thought BEFORE replying to a thread or BEGINNING a thread should not be too much for us to ask.

The banned individual had every opportunity to back off and go do something else. This was not his first provocation and he had been warned then. It's strange how some of you have misinterpreted what happened here. It does not change anything and it should not occur in the future knowing what the TOS is that Mike posted. Let's get back to doing what we actually are here for...to enjoy our common hobby.

I don't venture to say that all human interactions are disgusting, I only suggest that given anonymity and time, things will transcend that way, IE 4chan and other sites like it. I think we are intelligent enough to think about the potential for conflict and choose from among us those most likely to help keep the peace, or those possessing certain skills. You ask by whom; by ourselves.

I did a little research

Last year we had 77 threads moved/closed/deleted

That's 6.41667 threads per month.

This year we have had 12 threads moved/closed/deleted so far.

That would be an average of 3.42857 (12 threads / 3.5 months) threads per month but 5 of them were this month. So really it looks like its a pretty good year. Our numbers for the year are better than last year and this month looks like it could fit the average.

You seem desirous of someone to do your taxes and tell you the government owes you everything back!

When you find him, please let me have his phone number! :icon_lol:
