Hi folks,

I've had Kazunori Ito's TSR2 for some time now [ available at Simviation- search for BAC TSR.2]. This was an awesome British supersonic aircraft that was sadly cancelled [ 1960's politics were to blame apparently].

Mr Ito's model is a good one , but doesn't have an afterburner effect.The real aircraft was equipped with these.

Does anybody know of a tutorial available that I can use to install burner effects ?

I've tried copying in the relevant .cfg file entries from another aircraft and trying to tweak it, but I can't get the position right in relation to the jet exhausts.

Cheers :wavey:

Try asking over at cbfsim.org; IIRC this fix was posted over there some time ago..

Takes quite a bit of trial and error....I think there is a tutorial somewhere on lights positioning, which is essentially the same thing; Knowing the vertical/lateral/and front-to-back values in the config is the tough part....after that it is just a matter of getting them 'fine-tuned' to your liking....If I had that aircraft I would give it a go for you as I have done a few in the past, but I always used the trial and error process.....

For some really nice after burner and wing tip vortex effects and gauges to control them, download the freeware Alphasim F-105 and F-107 (available on Flightsim.com as ALPHA_F-105_FS9.zip and ALPHA_F-107.zip). I have used the effects and gauges with great success on a number of jets that needed the effects added. You can copy the basic light and smoke system info from the 107's aircraft config and paste them into the plane(s) you want to add the effects to....then you just need to tweak the position numbers to get them in the proper places.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the PM claudius24, that could be really useful.

Obio,

I will go grab that file and have a tinker around, thanks for that.

After an afternoon's jiggery- pokery with the .cfg file I've come up with a half decent short term solution as below.

The burners are assigned to the lights, but still look good.I would think that any afterburner effects file would do.

I would love to have the effect linked to throttle input so I will be having a play around.

I've also added a smoke effect as the You-tube videos show that it threw a bit out the back end.

Ive just added two extra light entries as shown............

light.8=2, -38.00, -2.00, 3.50,fx_efaburner,
light.9=2, -38.00, 2.00, 3.50,fx_efaburner,

[SmokeSystem]
Smoke.0= 25.00, -40.00, -2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.1= 25.00, -40.00, -2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.2= 25.00, -40.00, -2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.3= 25.00, -40.00, -2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.4= 25.00, -40.00, -2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.5= 25.00, -40.00, 2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.6= 25.00, -40.00, 2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.7= 25.00, -40.00, 2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.8= 25.00, -40.00, 2.00, fx_smoke_rx
Smoke.9= 25.00, -40.00, 2.00, fx_smoke_rx

By the way it must have been quick, because on a test flight it lost it's chase plane [ An English Electric Lightning- no slouch itself ] with only one burner lit.

Thanks Guys.:salute:

Kirk Olsson's F-16 uses a very nice A/B effect from the DSB Eurofighter Typhoon. There is an invisible gauge (provided in the DSB Typhoon package) in Kirk's panel.cfg file that kicks in the A/B flame and burner glow at 100% power. I'm in the process of installing it in Kazunori Ito's F4D Skyray.

The Alpha 105/107 effects are gauge controlled....they are assigned to various lights (taxi, wing, logo) but are totally controlled by the gauges and the inputs they pick up from the throttle and AOA or something. Been a while since I have looked at them...but they work like a charm.

Hi,

I would love to have the effect linked to throttle input so I will be having a play around.That's possible (almost all is possible with FS2004 ! :) )

You must edit the gauge linked with the effect....

EG:

This is a gauge edit of a modified of mine - original from Nick (a XML file can be edited with the notepad or other text editor)
The gauge is in a folder named
nnBF-gauges and located in the gauges folder of FS2004
Inside this folder is the XML file
NickSmokeFXControl2.xml
This XML edited give:

<Gauge Name="Jet EngineSmokeEffectControl" Version="1.0">
<Comment>
This freeware gauge controls the Jet Engine Smoke Effects, defined in
the LIGHTS section of the aircraft.cfg (number 6,7,8 and 9).
It controls up to 4 engines seperately, with function:
- Smoke 'on': Throttle position > 80% (to indicates a hard running engine)

</Gauge>

The bold numbers are the percent of throttle who trigger the smoke effect (here it's for 4 engines but can work for a single engine plane)

So for be active the gauge must be declared in the panel.cfg in the [Window00] like this (sample of a BF109G)

gauge31=bf109_DFWME!500_T, 589,425,46,51
gauge32=bf109_DFWME!Throttle_T, 2,446,34,31
gauge33=nnBF-gauges!NickSmokeFXControl2.xml, 0,0

And in the aircraft.cfg you have in the lights section

light.5 = 7, 0.88, -16.32, 0.72, fx_ME109_wingtip
light.6 = 7, 0.88, 16.32, 0.72, fx_ME109_wingtip
light.7 = 8, -19.16, 0, 0.84, fx_smokeLIGHT_TM_MM,

This a video of this plane with the smoke effect (thin smoke effect)

Hope it's help !

Thanks to all for the advice,

IMO this is the most helpful [ and friendliest ] FS forum out there.:applause:

Thanks again Claudius24, a year or so ago most of your last post would have gone completely over my head:kilroy:. Now I find myself understanding some of the more complex stuff [ well it is complex to me anyway !].

The joys of semi-retirement :jump:

Stew,
As you already have found out, the nice thing about the DSB Typhoon A/B effect is that it requires no editing of the .fx file itself to position it, just have to tweak the location values in whatever aircraft.cfg file you're working with.

TARPSBird

Here's Ito-san's F4D-1 after I got finished tweaking the A/B effects. I used fx_efaburner.fx for the flame and the glow inside the burner can, and efall.fx for the yellow glow around the tailpipe.
The original efall.fx was pure white so I opened the file in Notepad and changed the color value lines to...
Color Start=255, 226, 126, 255
Color End=255, 226, 126, 255
...to give it a warmer yellow shade. This is the kind of stuff I enjoy messing around with. :)

Hi Tarpsbird,

That looks really good, I will have a tinker around with the DSB Typhoon effect after Easter.

I will post up a screenshot when I'm done.

The F4D-1 is an interesting looking aircraft. Kazunori Ito has produced some amazing work IMO.I love the Westland Whirlwind and the Bristol Beaufighter and his Saab Draken is a looker.

Flying over to your side of the pond on Sunday [ Toronto ] to see family.:running:

The aircraft will be the Airbus A330 [ without afterburners ].:icon_lol:

Happy holidays to all.

Thanks to the advice from folks on this thread I've now got a throttle controlled burner working nicely.

If anybody else has the TSR2 and wants a similar effect, here are the new relevant .cfg lines.

Panel .cfg
gauge60=dsbxml!DSBAburner, 1,1,1,1 I suppose I should give it the next consecutive no [37], but it works anyway.

Aircraft .cfg

[LIGHTS]
//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing
//6=taxi light, 7=recognition light, 8=wing light, 9=logo light
// Z, X, Y
light.0=3, 3.41, 0.00, 4.49, fx_navred ,
light.1=2, 3.41, 0.00, 4.49, fx_strobe ,
light.2=3, 18.47, 0.00, -2.95, fx_navred ,
light.3=2, 18.47, 0.00, -2.95, fx_strobe ,
light.4=3, -21.88, 17.62, 0.89, fx_navgre ,
light.5=2, -21.88, 17.62, 0.89, fx_strobe ,
light.6=3, -21.88, -17.62, 0.89, fx_navred ,
light.7=2, -21.88, -17.62, 0.89, fx_strobe ,
light.8=6, -38.00, -2.00, 3.50,fx_efaburner,
light.9=6, -38.00, 2.00, 3.50,fx_efaburner,

I also did the same with his F4 Phantom.

Thanks again for all the great advice on here. :salute:
