View Full Version : The 2010 Sim-Outhouse Panther Award Contest

PRB
March 30th, 2010, 09:56
Those of you who have been around the Sim-Outhouse for some time will remember that the word “Panther” became a verb around here, as in “I Panthered again”. It means to “crash in spectacular fashion”, and was named after our esteemed administrator of the same name, because he did it so often, and posted great screen shots to prove it. In that spirit, and thanks to jmig for the idea, we will hold a contest for the best “Panther!” Post pictures and write ups of your most creative/stupid crashes. The write up creativity will be a factor in determining the winner! At the end of the year the SOH Staff will nominate candidates for the award. The winners will get a prize, which is still TBA. Good luck (I think!) :icon_lol:

I will not partecipate to the contest, but I'd like to know what happen to the real Panther: not seen him anymore in here (I must have been away too long)

Mr. P has been very involved with his outside work. He is still around. Go to the Photography forum and you will see some of his work.

It's possible to "capture the moment", as it were... Some of the effects depend on the model, of course, and sometimes you can hit replay quickly, before the sim resets (as I did here), and relive your wonderful moment. This picture was taken during the Sim-Outhouse MacRoberson Air Race Event, held in 2007. This is the MAAM R4D, and this picture shows what happens when you make a perfect landing in all respects except for the step in the checklist about putting the landing gear down...

It caught fire right after this but didn't grab the shot, as this one was better. Nav lights are still in position, heh! Replay rocks!

Someone actually did that in real life without damaging the plane! As I recall it was a US Navy pilot and he suffered a gear failure during a post maintenance test flight or some such. Anyway he set himself up on finals and shut down both engines, then he used the starter to motor them round so that one blade was at the 12 o'clock position and the other two were at 4 and 8, as the main wheels on the DC-3 still stick out the bottom of the gear bay when fully retracted he was then able to land without a scratch. The rescue crew basically turned up, jacked the thing up and let the gear down before towing it to the hangar!
I did try it in FS2004 once but the crash detection seemed to treat the prop disc as a crash box even when it's stopped...

Besides, as Roger aptly notes, to be "Full on Pantherization" there needs to be flames! http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/grinser/grinning-smiley-028.gif

It was possible to fly through the Sears Towers antenna masts with crash detect on
though not so the John Hancock building as we used to do in prior FS editions. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/sauer/angry-smiley-008.gif
After that it was through the Sears antennas & close around the John Hancock's.

But I think to be a true Panther, one must be landing. There must be fire and there must be smoke, damage is optional. :icon_lol:

Thanks Panther!! One question or 3 though.. Are you a female or a male? and is your race Black or White or other?.. Not a crash, but a major mishap. Pilot thought he would push the limits, and once he realized he had gone to far it was too late, he was stuck in orbit, regretting the decision!

I actually flew this into orbit with no tweaks to the aircraft files. All I had to do was uncheck stress causes damage, empty the tanks, and kick in the ramjets below 30,000. After that I was off like a shot.

Do Videos count?

Myself and a couple of very good friends flew, for a short time, the Cloud9 F-104 as part of Virtual salute to the men and women of the RCAF based in Europe. During that time I shot a few home movies, back then the quality of playback wasn't so hot and for this my apologies. As those who have flown and love the C9 F-104 in realistic mode you will understand what an amazing product it was especially when it came to failures... The J79 wasn't always that reliable...

Here are two... Ahem... Out takes that I like to think qualify as true "Panther" material...

Eeeeks,

Almost all my flights are crashes.... (embarrassing)...

There is always a mishap on my flights... :isadizzy:

either a building pops up or a hill a tree or another aircraft...

I am not proud of.... :(

I burn my tires, burn the belly of a pink Jet, buried one wing on the ground....

smashed my nose on a huge mountain... not very nice...

Good luck on the 2010 Panther Award Contest!

Parts flying off you say my good man? I can do much better than that. How about the largest part, the fuselage, flying away from the wreck?

http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/tt32/walkeramerican/screenshots/Series%20shots/2010-4-26_17-47-44-380.jpg
The key is to dish hard out of the bottom of a loop and momentarily SUBMARINE the entire aircraft, but fast enough to emerge from the water and head for another loop with just enough parts to glide after you've lost literally everything.
http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/tt32/walkeramerican/screenshots/Series%20shots/2010-4-26_17-47-51-557.jpg

http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/tt32/walkeramerican/screenshots/Series%20shots/2010-4-26_17-48-0-689.jpg

What came down hard...and went back up....must..come...down..again...
http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/tt32/walkeramerican/screenshots/Series%20shots/2010-4-26_17-51-58-198.jpg

And that solves the question about whether she floats or not. It's very rare that you an aircraft floating miles away from it's wreck site calmly (no flames, no parts, no drama). Two crashes, on submarining and one water ditching. With Accusim, you KNOW your crew is unhappy with your skills.

Hi,

Is there any effects pack that will recreate the "panthers" shown here?

Or does it apply only to certain aircraft?

And finally, what settings do you need to "panther" your aircraft?

Cheers,

This is not an "award winning" Panther by any means, but it did happen, and got pics! I was attempting to land on that carrier over there, and hit really hard, bounced back up in the air, almost hit the island, and staggered away with a busted right gear that would no longer go back up. So I "bingo'd" to the beach, in this case Henderson Field on Gusdalcanal, decalered an emergency and set her down. The busted main mount didn't hold, as feared, and she swerved off the runway into the grass. No flames though!

Not really trying to enter, but this is what happens when you forget to set your props to low idle on a wet 5700 ft runway. At least the slide was over a few feet away from the fence.

This was the worst mishap on a "normal" flight in a long while, although that MD-80 flight yesterday was a close call. Made the last exit at LAX just in time...*Shudders*
