The ultimate development of the Polikarpov fighter biplane was the powerful I153 Chaika, with retractable landing gear, either wheels or skis, folding to the rear. Coming on line in 1938 some thousands served in the Far East, Finland and on the Eastern Front. The I-153 was an anachronism, entering service at the time when the biplane had long since been eclipsed by the monoplane fighter. This is a model of an I-153 as flown in the Russian-China conflict at Khalkin Gol in August 1939. Gmax model by A.F. Scrub. Source included.

Be great to get some paint splashed on it, for the WOW airshow:

Downloaded...took a look at the texture sheets...looks like it will be a pretty easy plane to paint. Going to go test crash it now. Then I need to do some research on the engine...this bird may need a dedicated sound pack...now, who do I know that has a inkling of talent with sound packs????

I have tweaked the contact points:

[contact_points]
static_pitch = 15.2
static_cg_height = 3.7
tailwheel_lock = 0
gear_system_type = 1
max_number_of_points = 9

point.0 = 1, -8.358, 0, -1.383, 1574.8032, 0, 0.3, 15, 0.284956, 2.5, 0.742293, 5, 5, 0, 0, 0
point.1 = 1, 6, -2.833333, -5.5, 1574.8032, 1, 0.9, 0, 0.74, 2.5, 0.82, 5, 5, 2, 0, 0
point.2 = 1, 6, 2.833333, -5.5, 1574.8032, 2, 0.9, 0, 0.74, 2.5, 0.82, 5, 5, 3, 0, 0
point.3 = 2, 5.0903, -15.9275, 3.5803, 1181.1024, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 5, 0, 0
point.4 = 2, 5.3624, 15.9259, 3.4981, 1181.1024, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 6, 0, 0

And the lights:

[lights]

//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing

light.0 = 3, 6.2, -15.2, 3.4, fx_navred
light.1 = 3, 6.2, 15.2, 3.4, fx_navgre
light.2 = 3, 0.19, 0, -1.87, fx_beacon
light.3 = 1, -9.95, 0, 1.5, fx_navwhi
light.4 = 4, 0.52, 0, 1.66, fx_vclight

Have found a few videos of the I-153...and man is that going to be one tough engine sound to duplicate...it is POPPY...those short exhaust stacks really make the exhaust of each cylinder noticable. I have a sound pack that is close enough to work as a basis....will take some time to get it dialed in and closer to the M-62 (a derivative of the Wright R-1820 Cyclone)....yet is sounds nothing like the R-1820.

Yah that sound is like nothing else I've ever heard.
And it is LOUD!
I'd send you a video clip I took of it, but the camcorder hit its dynamic range limits and all you hear is wind...:mix-smi:

EDIT: Surely you didn't mean to take out the guns??
Nothing like a little harmless strafing run to clear the nostrils...

I thought the gun effects were for the engine exhaust....that's were they were located when I looked at the settings in ACM. OOPS!

Oh well, guess I will just have to put some "real" guns on the plane over in CFS2...that way I can actually shoot stuff with them.

Not sure how AF does it...but his planes get really good frame rates in CFS2. They convert nicely with all animations intact....no having to bother someone to do scasm work to get things fixed.

Does anyone have any idea for getting the VC gauges to be more crisp and clear on this plane? Kind of hard to read them as they are.

Hey Obio,

In the panel.cfg you must change the 256 values to this:

[Vcockpit01]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=512,512
position=7
visible=0
ident=
pixel_size=1024,1024

:salute:

Cees

Thanks for the tip....the gauges are now crystal clear and easy to read. Never would have thought that it would be something that simple.

Neat!

Just a little trivia for those not accustomed to the russian language:

Chaika (or Tschaika), Чайка, means "Seagull".
I won't associate the cuddly appearance of that aircraft to this kind of bird... :icon_lol:

A famous russian car, the GAZ M13/M14, beared the same name:

It's funny how different systems display things. Both the original contact points and OBIO's contact points cause the wheels to be buried into the tarmac. ACM shows OBIO's points to be almost perfect. Sooooooo, LOLOLOL!

This Yak will provide some fairly convincing sound in the interim:

...but I found a couple of sound clips which may be useful...

I was digging around in my sound file collection and came across a small zip that contained files recorded off a Yak-12 with the AI-14R engine...the sounds are not all that far off from the M-62 used in the I-153..needs a bit more bass and a bit more volume. I have e-mailed the author of those files to get his permission to use the files to build a I-153 sound package out of.
