Hey folks,
As some of you may know, Star Trek's creator, Gene Roddenberry, was in the Air Corps during the war. I did a little bit of research and found some info on his squadron.

Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia.

Roddenberry developed an interest in aeronautical engineering (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/Aeronautical_engineering) and subsequently obtained a pilot's license (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/Pilot_licensing_and_certification). In 1941 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/U.S._Army_Air_Corps), which in the same year became the United States Army Air Force (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/United_States_Army_Air_Force). He flew combat missions in the Pacific Theatre (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/Pacific_Theater_of_Operations) with the 394th Bomb Squadron, 5th Bombardment Wing (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/5th_Bombardment_Wing) of the Thirteenth Air Force (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/Thirteenth_Air_Force) and on 2 August 1943, Roddenberry was piloting a B-17E Flying Fortress (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/B-17_Flying_Fortress) nicknamed the "Yankee Doodle", from Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/Espiritu_Santo) when mechanical failure caused it to crash on take-off. In total he flew eighty-nine missions for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/Distinguished_Flying_Cross_(U.S.)) and the Air Medal (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/Air_Medal); he also received the World War II Victory Medal (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/wiki/World_War_II_Victory_Medal) before
leaving the Air Force in 1945.

Here is some info on 'Yankee Doodle'

I know there are no FSX B-17E's but perhaps it could be transplanted to A2A's great B-17G. I am looking foward to their Accusim update for it.

Anyway, I know any repaint attempt would be much appreciated by trekkies on this forum such as myself :)

Cheers
TJ

forgive me if I am wrong - but didn't he go on to fly for a commercial airline?

and wasn't it because of his first hand experience with 'foo fighters' that he got started thinking about space travel as a part of natural human evolution?

seems I read that somewhere...
