View Full Version : Spitfire!

I've been having this itch to fly some Spitfires and decided to scratch it a bit. Taking off from the Supermarine factory in Southampton, I headed east to Croydon airfield near London in the original Spitfire prototype. Had a slight problem on landing at Croydon and went through a fence, a tree line and ended up on the motorway before it would stop.

After taxiing back onto the airfield, I switched to a Mk VIII and flew on over London to get my bearings. Once I found the Thames, I knew where I was at and just followed it down to Southend and from there, Merc Air HQ at Rochford was easy to find.

The prototype from Aeroplane Heaven and the Mk VIII is AlphaSim's.

Didn't see any reporter, so I hopped in a Mk IX and took off to cross the Channel into Belgium and stop over at the BAF airbase on the coast at Koksijde.

I'm enjoying this and might just have to run through my Spitfire collection ;).

The Mk IX is from AlphaSim

Reporter is Alain De Cadernet (not too sure of the spelling) aviation journalist and one time motor racing driver, Pilot the late Ray Hannah, the master of low flying. The airfield looks like Duxford

indeed the good old Spity was famed for it's innovative skin construction, cornedamilium, a bonded skin formed from compressed breakfast flakes and Dutch cheese. :d

PS. cheated a bit, was an Emil in CFS2.

UKV,

actually your right, the damage textures called up by CFS2 often and usually use alpha channel for holes, etc.

Brought in the New Year flying a Mk XVI of the Belgian AF from Koksijde to Templehof-Berlin. It was a bit of a blizzard coming into Templehof and they insisted that I fly IFR, but I just scud run it on in and landed anyway. If they fuss too much I'll just claim a fuel emergency and a busted radio.

Next up, an engine change!

ETA: Speaking of the Mk XVI, a :icon29: in the Cantina to the first one who can tell what's the difference between a Mk IX and a Mk XVI. ;)

Packard engines :d

MkIa demo at the bottom of this page (http://www.justflight.com/product.asp?pid=281), I think the proto was an Xmas pressie one year, as was the MkIa for CFS2. The links for which go to the old Heavenly hangar domain, no longer live I'm afraid. I don't have them to give you as I have the full JF boxed edition.

Cees,
it's indeed Robert Sanderson's Mk. IIa.

Intended to become AVM Keith Park's (GCB, KBE, MC and Bar, DFC, DCL RAF, commander of 11th FG during the Battle of Britain, as you all probably know...) personal 'OK 1'.
Early WIP state, halted until my four Lufthansa Convairs are done.
I'm still not too happy with the colours: Although the RGB values were taken from simmerspaintshop, they seem a little too 'flat' for me...

For educational purposes, one of Park's bonmots:

"I have pilots here that are still thinking they are turning left and right, they have no idea what port and starboard are. There are pilots who think that the radio is for idle chit-chat, they have no radio knowledge at all. Fourteen to twenty hours in a Spit and they are given their wings.....it's downright ridiculous".

The damage texs don't work in FS9 to well, the FS9 model is set to use Alpha for reflections as opposed to CFS2's transparency. The fuselage and tailplane work okay as I avoided alpha channel transparency as being ableto see through to the sky through the 'hole' even when another surface was in the way was to unrealistic.

I usually fly this one with a guest pilot, I need to do him his own custom paint though. :icon_twi:

Couldn't resist flying the Schmittfire out of Germany into Prague, Czechoslovakia. Took off in a blizzard and landed in one. This is getting to be good practice for the RTW.

I've got two different Czech Spits. decisions... decisions.....

Willy
January 1st, 2010, 18:55
Flew a quick hop from Prague to Pardubice in a Czech Police Mk XVI. I've included a shot of the panel I use in these Paul Rebuffat Spitfires. I'd set it up as a RTW racer panel as at one time I was going to fly it in the RTW before I got the AH Mk XIX set up instead. I do like my little electrical panel pop up that I'd done for it.

Think I'm going to head south from here. All this snow is starting make me feel cold.....

Thanks, Cees!

But this one sure will take some time, as it has to undergo some severe weathering. I don't know if all the legends about Sir Keith, hopping from airfield to airfield during the Battle of Britain, are true - but this particular airplane sure can tell some stories...

Sorry for all you Spit admirers:
The Spitfire sure is a beautiful aircraft, but in my eyes, the Hurricane is the icon of this era with a destinct character! It's a fighter, created to carry out some serious punches in a battle - and not a fancy racing plane, put into a war dress.
I hope you don't mind my point of view :ernae:, but as far as my taste is concerned, the same goes for the grim Jug, compared to the shiny Mustang...

Cheers,
Markus.

Add me to the list, great stuff. Will his flight-suit be included in the repaint?

Don't worry about the Hurri's, love them almost as much as the Spit, I find it difficult to have a favourite, it more depends on my mood, sometimes it's the Mossie, Big Beau, Tiffie, Lizzie, Stringbag, etc. And that's just the native stuff, it gets :isadizzy: trying to choose. Probably my fav US fighter would be the Kittyhawks, but I do love those big Jugs too. Such a veritable smorgasbord, isn't it great!!

All these Spitfires and nobody mentioned these?????

In my opinion the Mk.V with by far very best external model. The VC looks quite decent, although not clickable. But nicely modelled and absolutely no problems in reading the gauges etc.

And it is free and there are extremely nice alternative textures available by RobH and SopwithChameleon.

As it is an model made for CFS2 it is a bit nose heavy, but a slight change in the central point of gravity or some trim will make this an extreme nice FS2004 add-on!

Time for my favorite Spits... the Griffon powered ones!

This is a Mk XII by Paul Rebuffat. It was the first Spitfire to be powered by a RR Griffon engine and was a clipped wing low altitude fighter. Only about 100 were made.

I took off from Pardubice, Czechoslovakia and flew down to Bolzano, Italy in the Italian Alps.

WRT to the earlier comments about alpha textures and seeing through bullet holes, yall aint seen nothing yet ;).

On the freeware Alphasim MK IX, what is the pod/housing under the belly that only appears when you turn on the lights? Whatever it's for it seems strange to have it appear with the light switch.

Desert Rat
January 3rd, 2010, 05:49
the slipper fuel tank, comes in two main sizes, 45 and 90 IIRC. Why the light switch? no idea. It maybe a specific, not much used light, for vintage plane, strobe maybe?

Here's my favorite Spitfire. The Aeroplane Heaven Mk XIX. I really don't fly it enough though. But as RTW season is rolling around again, I'll rectify that. Flew this flight from Bolzano to Rome and once I was on the ground I had to take a couple of screenshots with some visiting beauties....
