I don't know if any of you old fellows are familiar with anime, but here's one that you might find interesting.

It's called Sky Crawlers, and while it's mostly fictional, some airplane geeks might enjoy spotting familiar looking planes and designs.

They are making a game version of Sky Crawlers for the Wii. I think it is out in Japan already, but will be released here in the US in January 2010. Might have to look at that one after seeing a clip from the show.

Intersting how all of those designs have pusher props...

I want that in game form as Crimson Skies 2.

Got Sky Crawlers when it first came out in the States. Good movie, but the "pilots-as-forever-kids" theme was a little weak. And it could have had ALOT more flying! Not to mention the typical anime WTF ending.
I liked all the aircraft, and where they got their ideas from. All prop fighters should have reversible pitch props to back up into their hardsteads...

Not all of the designs were push props. Look at the Teacher's plane "Skyly J2". Anyone up for modeling this bad boy for CFS3?:icon_lol: http://www5.pf-x.net/~kumander/skyly.html (http://www5.pf-x.net/%7Ekumander/skyly.html) <- a lot more pics.

Been trying to track down the model kits. They seem to be quite rare.
The "Teacher's" plane looks like a cross tween a P-75 Eagle, and a Blackburn Firebrand. The "Sanka's" are based on J7W1 Shinden's, with FW-190-type cockpits.

well, it hasn't been out that long so I'm not surprised that there's not plenty of kits around yet. But some technical hobby genius created contra-rotating electric prop for park flyers, thus, some skillful fellow could create either Sanka B or Skyly J2, or some off the twin-motor fighters.

I often wonder what a world without Sir frank whittles invention would have been like..pistons and props, and no missiles, radar or "G" suites.

radar and missiles weren't directly related to Whittles jet engine development. G-suit is closer, but I think that the early plans were laid before first jets.

Is this related to the "Sky Captain" movie which features a modified P-40 that can do nearly anything?

I have Sky Crawlers for the Wii. The Wii controls are just bad but it will let you use a Wii classic or a Game Cube controller. The game engine is from Namco's Project Aces so the game close to the Ace Combat series in its over all look and feel.

Hopefully some one out there has better luck with Wii controls than me. I'm just use to a PS controller for Ace Combat and it took vary little for me to get use to a Game Cube for Sky Crawlers.

Hole #%^! Gamstop says that Sky Crawlers for the Wii is $8.99 used and 9.98 new! If you find it, buy it you will not be disapointed.

I just watched it, quite a good film. Very deep subtle plot mixed in a chaotic world, it has some intersting differences and similarities to another really good aviation based Anime, Miyazaki's 'Porco Rosso' I think my favorite design in the film was that twin engine pusher that flew along side that neat Shnden clone. I could have sworn I saw a picture of it somewhere, but that might be a really cool 'peculiar' concept to explore in FS.

Not really, its much more serious "alternate history" SF with some very well done combat flying sequences.
Its not really an action film, it has a rather convoluted plot that takes some getting used to but is rather interesting if you make the effort.
The background would also make a good alternate history CFS 3 campaign.
