I used to do this one just about every day in a Twin Otter, 2000 feet long.

Ofu, American Samoa. Don't be long and don't be short! :isadizzy:

cheers,

The first one in Gera's original post is Vestmannaeyjar, a small island off the south coast of Iceland, an hour's drive and 2 hour's ferry ride from Reykjavik. I went there last year and surprisingly that isn't the weirdest approach to that airport. The opposing runway, coming from the right in that image, has you passing between two very rugged volcanoes. It's an utterly beautiful island, and the site of possibly the only victory of man over volcano in history.

In 1973 a new volcano erupted on that island forcing an overnight evacuation of its 5000 inhabitants with just about every boat and ship in Iceland coming to the rescue. The lava was threatening to close off their fishing harbour which is their primary source of income. The Icelanders, hardy and determined as they come, fought the eruption for six months with fire boats and water cannons and finally defeated it. In the end the lava formed a new natural breakwater and actually improved the harbour. ;)

Here's another shot of this gorgeous place. The airport is just outside the frame, on the left.

If anyone feels inclined to make a scenery for this area do let me know, I took quite a few photos of the island and airport. :)

Some of the harriest approaches I've been on are into the Azores and Iceland. Not because of the runway or terrain, but the weather.
