Hey all,

So.. The rumours are coming out about the next launch date at Apple Computer. One is 'a lot' of rumours of a new Tablet computer.

More here;

http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=21729

The rumors around the arrival of a tablet computer from Apple have been out there for a while, but the latest one from the AppleInsider blog seems to have some meat to it.

The blog is reporting that Apple has plans to launch a 10-inch, 3G-enabled tablet, kind of an oversized iPod Touch, if you will. Because it would be 3G-enabled, there’s also growing speculation that Apple is tapping Verizon to be the carrier partner. Remember: the exclusivity agreement between Apple and AT&T only applies to the iPhone. (see update below)

Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Apple. Still, AppleInsider doesn’t just attribute the information to a source but rather, in a WSJesque way, cites “people well-respected by AppleInsider for their striking accuracy in Apple’s internal affairs.”

What’s most striking about this rumor is that it also includes information about the Steve Jobs Seal of Approval, which doesn’t come easy around Cupertino. The back-to-work CEO has reportedly signed off on the device and “cemented” it into plans for a Q1 launch next year.

With all of that said - and recognizing that no one is officially commenting about the device or fielding on-the-record questions - I offer the following thoughts to ponder, based on what I’ve read in other postings today.
The price becomes an issue because it would have to be cheaper than the lowest-priced laptop in the lineup ($999) but likely would be more than than $500. Anything less than that would put it on the comparison charts against the netbooks, which COO Tim Cook has called “junky.” At the same time, with a wireless carriers involved, subsidies will likely drive down the price even more.
Is it a oversized mobile device or a small-sized laptop computer? Well, that could depend on 1) whether it’s powered by Mac OS X or the iPhone OS and 2) the type of chip it has inside. The AppleInsider post has some good historical insight into the issue over the chip choice (in the latter half of the post.)
I wonder what this means for the Crunchpad, the tablet device that’s the love interest of TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington these days. That device, a 16mm thick tablet with a 12-inch screen, is expected to retail for about $300 and will be available “as soon as possible.” A post on CrunchGear this week, reporting on rumors of Verizon powering an Apple tablet, ends with blogger Peter Ha writing, “We (as in Michael and CrunchPad Inc.) better get on their horse and get the CrunchPad out.”

I would tell you that we’ll be waiting for the official confirmation from Apple - but I would also caution you to not hold your breath for that one. Knowing Apple, the official confirmation will come from the stage of a special event where the company will announce that the device is already in stores.

updated: TechCrunch, citing unnamed sources, reports that Verizon is fast-forwarding its launch of its 4G LTE service to reach markets by Q1 of 2010, instead of the second half of the year. No one is tying it to a device for Apple but TechCrunch’s source also noted that “there was talk of at least one non-dongle (wireless card) product that this LTE launch was being specifically geared towards.”

some of the touch-screen stuff i've seen "behind" doors is very impressive. It basically recognizes how many fingers are touching the screen...and makes the UI do different things. But what i've seen might or might not be for Apple... lol

I have for at least ten years believed that the future of PCs would be a thin table computer that you could use to write on and read books, magazine articles, downloads, etc.

This thing is absolutely retarded. Apple should make a competitively priced NETBOOK. Not a worthless tablet thing.

I will never buy a touch screen computer. Ever. :kilroy:

My G5 laser mouse is way faster than any of your guys' fingers!

Nothing beats a tablet for an RTS game! Having the screen mapped 1:1 to the tablet is awesome. FPS is a total failure though. :icon_lol:

EDIT: I mean graphics tablet. Not sure about the touch screen.

I tried out a touch screen in a Costco once. It had vista in it (cough cough). I was quite impressed. (Never quote me on that). Amazingly, the hp even looked like an Apple, all the unit was in the screen casing like an iMac.

I would love it if my iMac could have a removeable rear stand and had a handle grip in the top. I could take it places, like on a trip. A different sort of flip put 'landing gear system', have a wireless keyboard ready, and bing! in business.... Like a Laptop except TWENTY FOUR SWEET INCHES OF SCREEEEEEN instead of 17 inches..

Apple make a competitively priced netbook? Yeah. I'll need more than luck for that. :engel016: ;)

I've been having some fun conversations with Mac fanboys at college this semester. Only one of them has come up with one reason why Mac is superior. :mixedsmi:

KK....

You will get what you want, and pick fights whom you will..

Aside from that, I am a happy customer with Apple. They have treated me well. Their prices are better (for my expectations and what I have recieved). I love the OS, its fast, the computer is high quality, high technology, looks brilliant on my desk, even the keyboard blows me away and Ive owned it 9 months now.

When I hear people complain about Apples and they have never even tried one, I think they must be blind. They do not even know what they do, so they are commenting on something they know nothing about. The new OSX is nothing like it was 3 years ago. So I kind of feel sorry for them and just turn and look the other way. If they knew all the details, they would probably freak out, but they dont, and even if they did, they might even still laugh if all off and still look the other way.

So what can you do but smile and say, hey.... 'Sweet Freedom!' Choose what you want and be happy. and quit making fun of my computer! lol.....

:ernae:

EDIT: If you do make fun of my computer, and you see me smiling.. dont let it get to you. I know what I have and I am ok with it. :d

As a 'nix user, I know where you're coming from Bill.

It continues to be a quest of mine to try to understand why someone would buy an Apple. I guess I'm still missing something...

I never understood why people are so "pro" mac or PC. They are just machines. And besides, it's not like you guys are founders of Apple or any large PC firm...so why does it matter?

I've been using both Macs and PCs side by side for a very long time...and i LOVE them both.

For me, a PC/MAC is just a tool. They each have their benefits and downfalls.

For 3D modeling, gaming, etc. PCs win. No Mac can out-do an Alienware when it comes to high-end gaming...

For video editing, photoshop, graphics, MACs win handsdown (nothing like a 32Gig RAM G5).

However, MACs are so nicely designed. They make any studio feel super slick and clean. I hate how PCs look...every one of them is ugly. In fact, i hide all the PC boxes on the floor, and connect them to Apple screens :) G5s i can proudly display in the open.

I love my Apple editing station: Top of the line G5 + two 23" cinema displays + all brushed aluminimum = damn sexy!

Anyways, i upgrade my PCs (as in personal computer) every year....and for me, whatever is working the best that year, i buy. I use both iPhones and Blackberries too....so there! hehe

Oh man Feng... You had to mention those. Thats what got me so into Mac was my iPod Touch. It was so far advanced from the hp Jornada I had, which I was replacing for an updated PDA that could keep up with me. Finding out that Macs were huge iPods were what sold me.

Fast, clean, functional... Bottom line.

EDIT: Not to mention the cool special effects and short cuts.... Shadows, Reflections, Pages, Keynote, iWeb, iWork... For iPhone, Awesome Note, Contacts, iCal, Remote, etc, etc, etc...... The list just goes on...

hehe...sorry! :)

I like the iPhone, but my wife and i just can't type well on it. My wife does a TON of emails and SMSs a day, and for her, the blackberry is much faster to use for typing. In fact, she only uses it for emailing and sometimes checking facebook. She doesnt use any of its other functions or programs.

The iPhone is slick and comes w/ cool stuff...but we use it more as a "toy" for entertainment purposes. No work related stuff is on it.

So thus, the combination of both is perfect! LoL But iPhones look so nice.

Why can't a PC company hire some Apple industry designers and give themselves a visual make-over???? I swear...PC stuff are soooo ugly. Apple stuff is so refined and clean. I just can't believe nobody else can get the same feel. I've seen HP, Sony, etc. trying some "slicker" designs for 2009 and 2010...but it's still nowhere as refined as Apple. PCs tend to take the "as many buttons and lights as possible" approach.....oh and stick "Intel inside," "Nvidia inside" and "Vista inside" stickers all over the covers and insides. WHY???

That is why I like the appearance of my Antec 900. It has some manufacturer stickers I chose to put on it, and its got awesome blue fan lights that illuminate my room at night when I'm using it. It goes well with the blue glow of my Saitek Eclipse keyboard and the blue and black color of my Logitech G5.

Macs look very boring to me in comparison.
