Funny, I seem to remember an anatomical study many years ago (the 70's) that pointed out the natural arm-swing in humans had a lot to do with maintaining balance - equilibrium - center of gravity issues.

Heck, the Geico cavemen could have told us it was good for us to swing our arms when we walk. It's so easy a caveman can do it.
