View Full Version : What setting for Texture Bandwidth_Mult?

Had it set at 200. Then saw a forum note that lowering it to 10 helps. Default is 40(?). Texture loading vs stuttering. I have a single processor and the lower number 'fix' may just be for dual processors. Very confused. I have both some texture loading delays and some stuttering. Looking for a reasonable trade-off. What really does the Texture Bandwidth control? Tks

You will not get a good balance with a single core processor. Forget it.
With my old Pentium IV 3,2 GHz, I could get my textures at 1m/pixel only if I flew less than 150 knots. My system could not handle anything above 40 for the texture_bandwith_mutl.

I've gone down from 40 to 10, and have a Pentium 4 3.2 MHz. It has made a considerable difference; much much smoother now. New computer this autumn, but for now I'm enjoying FSX a lot more.

There is no one answer for any of the settings.
Do one at a time so you know what does what.
First, get rid of it and fly. If you are happy, leave it out.
Then just experiment. I have a i7 Vista 64 and the setting does nothing for me unless I raise it over 40-60 then all kinds of wiredness happens. I have it at 10 now.
Also I found out the aircraft you are flying and where has a HUGE effect on testing. I test with a demanding plane, say the A2A P-47 or Aerosoft F-16. Then from there on out any other aircraft the computer doesnt break a sweat.

I went from 400 to 10 and it was so totally awesome after the change, I nearly fell off my chair...

HeHe...I think you fall off that chair more than you admit.....:173go1:

I went from 40 to 10 and the frame rate increased a lot, but the detail on the land dropped like a rock. Texture calls took a LONG time. I should have a very good system, but im getting horrible performance.

Intel Quad 2.4GHz
ATI 4870 1gb
Two WD "Black" hard drive in Raid-0 stripe
4GB of RAM.

Like most FSX tweaks you should find what works best for you, since results will very from rig to rig.

I'm at TBM = 10 and its good :ernae:

I appreciate all the input. Thank you. Always a trade-off. Will do more 'testing' as you all have suggested. Great community here at SOH. Can get help on any SOH forum.

Mine initially installed at 40 and I've tried higher numbers to no avail. I've not tried the lower numbers, my install works fine as-is and I think I'll leave it alone... maybe... we'll see... hmmmm...:kilroy:

Me too. It is very smooth. Core Duo Quad Q6600.

tbm 10 equates to poor texture loading...

however that is probably best for the OP with an older CPU

Mine was default @ 70, moved to 100 and it only works well when I can attain a solid 30fps otherwise its stuttery. 40 seemed to be ok too, but the textures werent loading as fast

Well mine is not older, it's an i7 920 and it worked wonders on mine so it's hard to say why really.

So you can turn it down to 10 and don't notice any slow texture loading?

If I drop it 10 the textures load very slowly

Sometime when it's first time running FSX for the day, the area where I pick the plane, sometimes the aircraft textures load slowly but other than that, no slowdown.

I think it seems that this TBM is a great thing for the i7 cores more so than other quads or duals....

Its odd because if anything you'd think you would want to increase the TBM with a faster i7

I know...There is just no reason behind what FSX does ....:isadizzy:

But pre SP1 it still only used a single core CPU properly.....:pop4:
