I first saw Billy perform at the Indianapolis Circle theater, back in (I think) 1977. The theatre capacity was only around 800. He was amazing, and a consummate performer. I remember him making comments about the cockroaches were so large backstage, they were wearing platform shoes.

A couple years later, when I was working as a chauffeur, I had the honor of driving him. The catch was, the only way I could ensure I'd get the job that night, was to drive for free. Didn't matter to me at the time. I just wanted to meet Billy. And so I did. I had several items for him to autograph, and (although his manager wasn't too thrilled about it) Billy signed every one of them. I asked Billy if he remembered performing at the Circle theatre two years previously, and he did, adding that he had a terrible toothache that night, and had to find a dentist for an emergency visit.....After the concert, I joined the group for some drinks at the bar in the Hilton where they were staying. Not all the members showed up, but I did get a chance to talk to Liberty Devitto (the drummer). Interesting character. I still have the list of rooms they occupied for that visit to Indy. The interesting thing about it is they used fake names, so groupies wouldn't know how to find them!

I have to say something about what it was like to see Billy Joel perform. He was non-stop energy from the beginning to the end of every concert. Back in the late 70s, his stage was a maze of platforms and ramps. He'd run up and down them, while singing, and never miss a note. He was an amazing to watch and hear.

Anyway, Billy Joel's older releases (in my opinion) were really great. Here are a few examples:

"The Entertainer"
A3-JdCrd71Y

"Scenes From An Italian Restaurant"
uDvytBCh3xM

"Pressure"
Fu10CgX0USw

"Allentown"
FSrO_92cO2o

"Good Night Saigon"
cOw5bLrhauI

and my favorite from that time period is:

"Prelude:Angry Young Man" I really like this video, because it shows Billy's talent on the piano. Watching his hands up close is something to see. He is good; very good.

Wow! I just read his comments. Rosenbaum surely does hate Billy Joel, and is specific about why.

The reason why I first started listening to Billy was (at least back then) he wrote ALL of his music; every bit of it. That may not be the case now; I don't know. But it impressed me.

The other thing is, I don't necessarily pay attention to words and meanings in a song. Sometimes I just like a tune because of the beat, and melody. Just like when I was in high school, and the literature teacher would "disect" a book we'd read - down to every detail. I hated that. I read for enjoyment. The same thing for music; especially Billy's.

Not everyone likes the same music. Sure would be a boring world if they did.

although i'm not a raving billy joel fan, he does have alot of talent, and i like much of his early stuff. i read that article before, and that critic is nothing more than a pretentios snob with no real eye (or ear) for art. and one thing i will say is, billy joel might not be that guys idea of an artist, but whens the last time you heard of an art critic dating a world famous super model like crusty stinky?

Billy Joel has never been liked by critics. He's one of those guys that was most popular in his hometown and it fanned out and dissipated from there. He's also one of the performers that is more popular now than when he had a hit record. Unfortunately, I think he's really suffered in the past few years from alcoholism.

His story telling and visuals in his songs always grasped my full attention. New York State of Mind and Downeaster Alexa are among my all-time favorite songs.

I often wonder two things about Billy Joel- 1. Will he ever put together another hit record? 2. Will the original recordings be remastered as they were played, without being sped up, etc. He made mention that his voice is higher on his early recordings because it was sped up to fit airplay time restrictions.

Railrunner,

I have not read that Billy's voice was altered on any other recording, except Cold Harbor Springs. I knew that LP was that way. Billy's early career was hampered by his first contract with the producer of Cold Harbor Springs, if I recall correctly.

I have all of his early recordings, including both LPs by the Hassles. I don't have, however, the lp done when he was with the group "Attila". Years ago, when LPs were still big, I bought his only "live" lp at the time, called "Souvenir". It was a promo album. I still have it, plus a remastered LP of 52nd St.

I don't have much of Billy's more recent recordings. Now and then, (as was the case last night) I get into the mood for listening to him. The man could definitely put on a great performance.

Here a few other B. Joel videos I found on Yahoo videos. I normally don't like to watch videos there, as you have to endure stupid ads at first; plus I don't think you can fast forward....but I couldn't find these on Youtube:

"All My Life"......in the style of a Frank Sinatra type tune

This is my FAVORITE video!
"A Matter Of Trust"

"All About Soul" was from the River of Dreams release, I believe. What a coincidence, but I was just listening to that song a few minutes ago, on the way back from the grocery.
