I really enjoy taking pics of my dioramas as I build them and making little vignettes type pics with my camera. Before gluing everything down I like to move things around to tell little stories within the larger diorama. Here is some examples, hope you like them.Cheers! John.:icon29:

I always feel like a kid when I look at your work John, thanks! I asked a long while back about putting a camera on some small tracking and have it motorized to move through different rooms, I don't personally know how it could be done but just thought that would be a neat experience. :ernae:

John, I love looking at your work! You sir are a topnotch grade A true artist through and through. Amazing :applause::icon29::applause:

I’m going to put in a request. The picture Engshoplighting003-1-1.jpg or as titled “Once upon a time” Could it be possible to get a better picture of that engine, maybe stick in a mechanic working on it or something.

Guys, as you've seen, every picture is amazing. The models are incredible art and the photos show another of John's talents - photography.

What you can't feel is the overall scale of this work and the constant discovery of new details as you wander 'through' one of his dioramas. I just had the privilege of spending (was it really??) 5 hours with John in his home, standing over, hunched down, crawling around, trying desperately not to drool... finding the birds' nest in the rafters, the dropped bolts, the forgotten wrench, the hundreds of details that make these artworks something very special.

Even more special was combining that with being able to visit an old acquaintance and one of my former flying instructors after a 40+ year gap.

Thank you John!:ernae:
(BTW, we DID go to Ste. Anne's and the museum/shop was open. Had a personal tour that filled 3 hours! The 'Bollie' was nice, but the Bleriots and the FC2 were the highlights of the day!)

John Reid, your pictures bring back a man very dear to us, my Father in Law, Arthur Fisette. He was born in Trois-Rivières P.Q. and when he was very young, moved to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place><st1:City>Athol</st1:City>, <st1:State>Massachusetts</st1:State></st1:place>. He served as a Pattern Maker apprentice in the Starrett Tool factory. He then went to work in the United Shoe Machinery Corp in <st1:place><st1:City>Beverly</st1:City>, <st1:State>MA</st1:State></st1:place>.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
When <st1:country-region><st1:place>England</st1:place></st1:country-region> went into World War 1 they asked the <st1:country-region><st1:place>U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> for woodworkers to come to repair their airplanes. Arthur quickly joined the <st1:country-region><st1:place>U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> Army was made a Staff Sergeant and rapidly went to <st1:country-region><st1:place>England</st1:place></st1:country-region>.<o:p></o:p>
At first the British were very jealous of this American that was dressed in a better uniform and was paid a kings ransom. But he quickly won them over and he ended up managing the group of aircraft repairmen.<o:p></o:p>
After the AEF came across to fight the war, he was transferred back in the Army and served in the 94th Aero Squardron. His ability to speak French made him invaluable to his buddies.<o:p></o:p>
Your pictures could have been taken at that time. After the war he returned back to the “Shoe” and then when WWII came along he volunteered to teach English pilots military drill and discipline at <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Beverly</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName>Airport</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>.. Since he was in charge of cadets he had to be given a rank. So he went back in the Army as a second leutenant. By the time was over he had attained to rank of Major.<o:p></o:p>
He not only was my wife’s father, he became my best friend and every Memorial Day weekend, he and I would make the pilgrimage to <st1:City><st1:place>Chicoutimi</st1:place></st1:City> up along the <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Saguenay</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>River</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p>
I’ve taken a little license with the picture but it still could have been Arthur working on the <st1:City><st1:place>Liberty</st1:place></st1:City>. If he was still alive he woud be 112 years old.

The last two vignettes are at the opposite ends of the scale in many ways. The crashed airplane is very somber in mood while the "Buds" piece is happy .One very dark and the other very light.
The airplane picture gives the eye very little visual information and looks the most real, while the opposite is true of the figures. Both tell stories but on completely different levels.Proving that in art sometimes less is more! http://www.armorama.com/modules/SquawkBox/images/smilies/wink.gif

Thank you to the Aerodrome.com <hr style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> for including my stuff in their Art Gallery.Until now only 2D paintings or drawings have been accepted. Not only have they recognized my dioramas as Art but also my digital picture compositions in 2D as well.
This is wonderful news not only for me but for all dioramists and photographers out there.
Sure it is not the American or Canadian Aviation Artists associations that we are talking about here but it is a crack in the door of what is considered Aviation Art.

Somebody asked me what do you call what you do? you know I had a tough time putting a handle on it myself. When you take a picture of a painting they call it a print. When you take multiple pics in a row they call it a movie. But when you take a 2D pic of a composition that you have created in 3D,what then would you call it.If your composition is totally scratch built and then you take a pic and then put it in a digital frame what would you call it ?A digital print? Interesting..........(thanks Ted)

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Dioramas as a one frame movie!<!-- google_ad_section_end --> <hr style="color: rgb(133, 130, 101); background-color: rgb(133, 130, 101);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> <!-- google_ad_section_start -->"What we wanted to do at the beginning of all this, was to show what happens when you take human beings and put them through hell, then wonder how in the world they will approach life when they come home".

Steven Spielberg on his new piece The Pacific.

I was reading this in my newspaper this morning and it struck me how similar his idea for making a 10- part mini series on the war in the Pacific, and my idea for my latest diorama "Loss Of Innocence,Will it Ever Be The Same" are alike.(We must be reading each others mail.)
This is exactly what I have been writing about recently on the power of the storyboard diorama as a one frame movie.
A movie tells a story in all its thrilling detail and action,on a big screen with music, dialogue etc... a diorama does the same but with one frame. That is the magic and the challenge of the storyboard diorama reducing it all to one frame and still tell a powerful story.Sometimes the story is even more powerful in diorama form because it is left up to the viewer to connect the dots in his mind.A movie lays it all out for you ,a diorama requires a little more imagination on your viewers part.
This is why I believe storyboard dioramas are as much an "Art "as any of the other visual media.
