I know. Two planes are ok for me, but I was hoping for a really good offline campaign. I guess I'll buy it anyway.

i havnt seen anything saying you can or you cant, i'm gonna guess that you'll prolly be able to do your own missions and thats about it .... if they even decided to ship with the mission builder :kilroy:

i thought the Fokker DVIII was a single high winged craft? Also I thought it saw limited to no use in WWI

According to their blog ROF will ship with 2 free aircraft - Nieuport 28 and Albatros D.V. The Fokker D.VII and SPAD XIII will be available on the day of release at extra charge. They plan to release 1-2 new planes a month after that. http://riseofflight.com/blog/Blogs/October-2008/Project-news-from-producer.aspx I would guess Neoqb will eventually announce their intentions as to 3rd party content development.

i'd prefere large varity of a decent standard then just 2 .. every mission would be the same just in a different area :isadizzy:

I just dont agree selling a "sim" with only 2 planes, then chargeing you if you want more ... i wouldnt have a problem if there where to be included in patchs like IL2 as they get completed ... but chargeing for em? I'm sure they have their reasons but still :kilroy:

EDIT: Also the only shots their showing are off the spad and DVII .. which you dont get with the game .. false advertiseing?? If microsoft did the same type of thing they'd be hung, drawn and quaterd!

sorry if i seem to have a bee in me bonet .. but why let some companies get away with it whilst others wouldn't??

They will relase the SPAD XIII and Fokker D.VII. Its a pity for me, because there is no British design. The SPAD XIII is in USAF paints. But I understand that it is for marketing purposes.

Very similar setup was launched with the Thirdwire's "first Eagles". There were flyable: SE5a, SPAD XIII and Fokker D.VII + AI DFW C.V, Salmson A.2a and Albatros D.Va.

Thx for the data from the blog, Bjoern.
:censored: , looks like that they will provide two crappy (I mean by performance) planes and two with better performance will be payware. That is very s:censored:y...

"If you want to drop more eggs, buy Gotha or HP 0/400 for 40$ and if you cannot afford that, buy DFW C.V which will carry only 100 kgs of bombs. Now, only 15 $. Limited offer!" :costumes:

Doesn't it kinda depend on what the base price for the sim is? And by the way, isn't this model a stripped-down version of exactly what we do with FS now? We buy a sim with a limited number of planes and then spend years purchasing more planes, scenery, clouds, skies, you name it. It looks to me as though the developers need to recoup some costs before diving wholesale into plane creation. For myself, I'd rather see some numbers before barbecueing them for the strategy in advance.

empeck
October 17th, 2008, 10:53
I agree with spotlope.

RoF is the only simulator based on completely new engine released recently. I guess development was very expensive, they had to find a way to earn more money. Now we have to wait and see what they are planning.

stiz
October 17th, 2008, 11:02
now i've cooled down a bit :redf:

good point that it is like we do for FS .. but that still doesnt really explain the previews on their website that show planes that wont be included in the initial release.

If Microsoft showed previews screens of FS11 with say a wartime p51 and b17 with everyshot of it, with no indication on their website that they werent included and where actually payware addons, they'd be bad mouthed everywhere and prolly slammed by law for it (well maybe not but it is false advertising, leading the customer to belive their getting something which their not). Now if they included shots of the N28 and Alb D.V, and saything that the spad and DVII where payware addons i wouldnt really have a problem .. see where i'm comeing from??

what spotlope said...

I am far more concerned with smooth playability without hangs or stutters that are software related (I expect to have to have an uprated rig by then) than I am in how many flyables it comes with at release.

This is the first I've heard that it will be for online use only - my understanding was that there would be a campaign generator or other offline commitment either with initial release or else available later as an addon...

I have resigned myself to this idea of buying a 'core' sim - like FSX - and then aquiring aftermarket enhancements -free or payware- to suit my own taste...

It is costly, but it is acceptable to me especially since there seems to be no other way for developers to afford to develope these sims

I am really looking forward to flying WWI air combat in the virtual skies :ernae:

Lukasz, the blog portion was Robby's find.

I bet RoF will have much better sales if it will include the essential fighters of that time bundled with a reasonable price and nearly unlimited enhanceability.

Kind of like the Wo* series, which by the way is made by one single guy.

robby88
October 18th, 2008, 14:37
Yep it's very much as spotlope says .... very similar to the situation with FS. Neoqb are developing as a platform and releasing the sim in stages. Flight sims are incredibly costly to develop and they have to get a product out there to start earning money and provide a return to their investors.

My understanding is that while it will cater very much for online play it will also offer quite good offline single play. They haven't made any public announcements as to 3rd party development but I would think they would. But what form that will take I don't yet know. I would like to hope that ROF will have more maps in future. I'm interested in WW1 maritime aviation and also bombers. The Italian front would be nice too.

Well said Robert and Heywooood!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
It is everybody’s right to decide whether a product is worth the money for them, but I find it discouraging to read people having a judgment on what is ‘reasonable’ or ‘fair’, implying some kind of universal norm, without ever having seen the product concerned. Who knows; perhaps the quality of the planes we do get in RoF is so good that the developers cannot afford to include more. After all, many FS addons cost tens of dollars. Or perhaps the other aspects of the sim require so many resources that selling planes as ad-ons is the only way to make a profit. I see it happening so often; there is a post about a new sim product and all the good attributes hardly receive attention but one or two aspects that people don’t like are dragged on about endlessly. If somebody will not buy RoF because there are only two planes included, or because he doesn’t like the planes, fine. Frankly, I couldn’t care less. I can see for myself that there are only two planes included and whether someone else will buy the sim or not is totally irrelevant for me. But to imply from such a fact that the developers are asking an ‘unreasonable’ price is unfair and does not add anything useful or positive to the discussion. In a free market there are no ‘fair’ prices; there are merely prices people want or don’t want to pay.

I'll be getting this, just for the pure fact that they gave us the best Dr1 for FSX. :ernae:

I was too harsh in my statement, but it was my frustration.
If the game will succeed (Iam pretty sure of that), there will be more maps for sure. I hope that they will offer free updates with the planes (which can be "unlocked" after you will pay). This is how it works in Condor Soaring Sim.
If only N.28 would be as good as she was in the RB3D :d

May I direct your attention to Over Flanders' Fields.

http://www.overflandersfields.com/

Not only is this a sim which has been through extensive phase 1 and phase 2 freeware releases but it offers a real bang for your buck.

Phase 3 will be available in the near future as $50 payware.

Although you can follow the link and read more, I feel constrained to extract the full feature list for your consideration.

Before anyone seeks to adveresly criticise a sim which has at its base the original CFS3 engine, please realise that most parts of CFS3 have been replaced, renewed or improved. From High Res Scenery, more Land, better AI (computer pilots), Physics, Flight models, Damage Models, Aircraft Models, Effects, Ground objects and scenery, and finally and most importantly, with a FULL replacement for the CFS3 campaign engine. This is "OFF Manager" a NEW INDEPENDENT WW1 HISTORICAL CAMPAIGN ENGINE!

This may not be flightsimming for the out and out purist, but it will bring to you a fully immersive sim which will allow you to relive WW1 flying in a largely historical context.

I urge you to at least consider it.You can pre register for a copy of P3 if you follow the link.

I have no financial connection with the OFF development team and will not benefit financially from any sales of P3. I am,unashamedly a huge supporter of their endeavours which In my humble opinion rightly deserve to be supported.

Best

8) NEW For P3!:: Fully Dynamic weather - weather changes as player flies - in real time.

9) NEW For P3!:: Dynamic Wind.

10) NEW For P3!: Historical weather mode - weather plays out as it did historically and directly affects the quantity of craft in the air as well as on very bad days actually grounding the crews.

11) NEW For P3!: Historical weather has a direct impact on air traffic density.

12) Enhanced for P3!: Moving frontlines and creeping damage and dereliction - frontlines are modelled in 12 'states' for the period of the war.

13) Front Line locations and positions have been accurately researched and then 'reduced' to 12 major 'states' and rendered within the advanced OFF terrain system.

14) Revised Lighting.

15) Revised Sea graphics.

* * * ALL NEW FOR PHASE 3!: * * *

1) NEW For P3!: Revised parameters to help ensure that the AI fly the craft with correct WW1 settings... including:

1.1) NEW For P3!: AI Take-offs now perfected – full throttle takeoff runs with reduced rotation speed - AI now take-off using the mission takeoff directive.

1.2) NEW For P3!: AI dog fighting totally overhauled greatly improved - be amazed at the new AI performance - it really is a fight for your life scenario if you run into skilled enemy AI pilots.

1.3) NEW For P3!: AI cruising now set to realistic WW1 speeds.

1.4) NEW For P3!: Player can now warp (optional) when at 60Mph.

2) NEW For P3!: Resolution of the occasional CFS3 weird 'weightless flight dynamics' of player craft when it is disabled - fixed.

3) NEW For P3!: Burning craft flying on - fixed.

4) NEW For P3!: Long range sniping is greatly reduced.

5) NEW For P3!: Gun Jams built in.

6) NEW For P3!: Destroyed or Dead planes don't shoot.

7) NEW For P3!: AI only shoots when they mean it - no shooting for 'sound effects'

8) NEW For P3!: Outcomes data ensures that the Wrapper knows exactly where the player landed and resolves captivity criteria.

9) NEW For P3!: Outcomes data enables player selected, dynamic replay, of the last flown mission in great detail - find out really what happened - did you shoot down that DR1 or was it the allied machine gun crew on the hill? Mission replay lets you know the grisly facts in a Play Pause Continue type environment.

10) NEW For P3!: 'Enter direct to Mission' from Wrapper - exit direct to Wrapper on mission conclusion.

11) NEW For P3!: Ongoing optimization of core functions.

12) NEW For P3!: Further dog fighting improvements

13) NEW For P3!: Improved manoeuvring tactics

14) NEW For P3!: Improved AI ‘manager’

Another RoF blog update... on damage modeling http://riseofflight.com/blog/Blogs/October-2008/Damage-model-screenshots.aspx

Hopefully SOH will eventually have its own RoF forum so that we don't have to post OT updates in other forums. I did send an email to Ickie a while back suggesting such but didn't receive a reply. Maybe the SOH admin/mods might like to consider?

Hi Hans - I'm not involved with ROF at the moment - just a WW1 aviation enthusiast.

Very good point, Robert. Iam sure that many folks who are still running RedBaron3D will swich to RoF, as they want new sim with powerful multiplayer. Ive been playing that game for six years and been a member of online squadron. I hope that someone will recreate Warforces or RB World League on this platform :)

This remindes me of IC's work... Oleg Maddox. But that's not a bad thing. As far as I know he's the only one to come out with a new game engine for flight sims that will look this way. As in BOBII-Storm of War, but I've no idea how far that is in production.

What gets me is the minimum requirements.... "Processor: Core 2 Duo (Intel) 2.4 HGz". That alone leAves many of us out. Plus it's an online sim.... will it be a charge to playsite? Again, no thanks.

I'll go with OFF thankyou. ;)

I have seen ony that it would be optimised for online play NOT exclusively for online play...there WILL be a single player mode for this new WWI sim be sure.
