Converting files into and out of extended format is super easy. All you need is Martin Wright's DXTbmp and the related dll library. I will give you links to what you need:
DXTbmp:
http://www.btinternet.com/~mnwright/download/dxtbmpx.EXE (http://www.btinternet.com/%7Emnwright/download/dxtbmpx.EXE)
The DLL library:
http://www.btinternet.com/~mnwright/download/mwgfxdll.EXE (http://www.btinternet.com/%7Emnwright/download/mwgfxdll.EXE)
Once you have downloaded these two files, run them. Once done, start up DXTbmp, and open the files you have repainted one at a time. As you open each file, click on File, Save, and select DXT3. Bing bang boom. Easy as falling off a log.

Yes - you don't even need anything more exotic than MS Paint when you use DXTbmp.
