I just heard on the news this morning that a bill is being considered in the US congress to tax digital downloads. What next the air we breath.

Absolutely crazy.

If that happens then all sites like this will need to charge a fee for the down load. How the H3ll do you do that.

Never mind the fact that many freeware developers expressly have in their license agreement that you can not do that.

I think we would see a lot of freeware developers yanking their products from the net.

Doing a quick google on "Digital Download Tax", it looks like quite a few legislators have tried to introduce something like this for years.

Not sure about the current one though.

Most of the proposed ones in the past (I VERY briefly glanced over a few) sounded like it was more of a sales tax than anything. That should exclude free downloads, since free isn't taxed (usually).

What ever happened to 'no double taxation'? Now we are tripple, quadruple, etc, taxed! Goodness.... Breathing tax, walking on sidewalk tax, gas tax, local gas tax, stadium gas tax, landing or touch and goes at airports tax, aircraft fuel tax....


Next thing you know, the FS tax! Start up your computer, tax... Landing in FS tax. Combing your hair tax....

Taxing is bad enough - as it is, we are being taxed for DSL in US.

BUT!!!!

Metering bandwidth? - many ISP's, cable and telephone co's, are already testing the idea. Some may have postponed the idea for a while, seeing the initial public outcry, but you can see their mouths salivating! They are not going to give up easy.

:running: Run, don't walk, from ISP's that consider or test metering concepts! It's bad enough we have the crappiest broadband in the developed world.

Actually...yes! Consider the new taxes on "carbon footprints" as nothing more than a tax on air. If you breath, you produce carbon dioxide. Taxed!

A man walks into a store followed by his ten-year-old son. His son is spinning a quarter in the air and catching it between his teeth. While walking through the store someone bumps into the boy and the coin goes straight into his mouth and lodges in his throat. He immediately starts choking and going blue in the face. His dad starts panicking and shouts and screams for help.
A middle-aged, fairly unnoticeable man in a gray suit is sitting at the snack bar in the store reading his newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee. At the sound of the commotion, he looks up, puts his coffee down, neatly folds his newspaper and places it on the counter. He gets up from his seat and makes his unhurried way towards the boy. When he reaches the boy, the man carefully takes hold of the boy's testicles and squeezes, gently but firmly.
After a few seconds the boy convulses violently and coughs up the quarter, which the man catches in his free hand. Releasing the boy, the man hands the coin to the father and walks back to his seat at the snack bar without saying a word.
