Where in FS9 does the mesh file reside?

I'm not sure where the default mesh is located, but I've got my addon mesh in the Addon Scenery folder.

Mesh is a scenery .bgl, loaded in the FS9 > Scenery folder, I believe mesh is in the World folder. Those more knowledgeable may correct me.

I use FSGenesis and it is self-installing. Other mesh packages, I do as Willy and put them in Add-On Scenery with a folder name of the mesh and a Scenery sub-folder containing the .bgl mesh. There should never be any textures with mesh.

Hey,

Cazzie's indeed right! The bgl's go into the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\World\scenery

Hope this helps!

Thanx, fellars. That's one place I didn't think to look. So a replacement mesh could go in there? Say, for instance, a rock mountain for Gibraltar instead of a flat spot. Then would the existing land class for Gibraltar fit itself over the new contours or would that have to be redone? And where would that reside? I ran across some defintions of all these terms the other day and am trying to wrap my brain around it all. Addon scenery I understand, but I was curious about replacement scenery.

It could.
But it doesn't have to.
You can keep your mesh scenery folders whereever you want to keep them. FS will find them as long as they are installed into the scenery.cfg database properly.
I prefer to store all my addon scenery (airports, mesh and landclass files) outside the FS9 folder, keeping a better overview on them. And I hate addon scenery packages coming with an automated installer storing them where they want...

Cheers,
Markus.

You're right WBK, but if you install it into another folder and need to activate it in the addon scenery part of the sim, you have to think about the priority of the mesh. If you install it into the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\World\scenery folder, you don't have to.

You are completely right though if you're referring to an uninstall of the mesh. Your way is lot easier in that respect!

Take care y'all!

AHA, that makes sense, Markus. Although I haven't dealt with Scenery .cfg, I have dealt with Aircraft .cfg. There are times when I've not needed all the numerous aircraft textures and I have deleted the ones not needed, while editing the aircraft .cfg file, also. I have found I now have three FS9 scenery .cfg files. New, Old, and plain Scenery .cfg files. And they all have addon sceneries I have deactivated and removed. If I delete these 3 inaccurate scenery .cfg files, would a new and accurate be generated when I start FS9? I'm under the impression that the Scenery .cfg is updated by activation of addon scenery and a reboot. Is that so?

Hi Waco,

Regarding the scenery.cfg, when you make a modification to the scenery.cfg FS2004 will rename the previous one OldScenery.cfg and the modified one NewScenery.cfg

When FS2004 restarts it recognises that changes have been made and you get the expected database update pop-up message. FS2004 then renames NewScenery.cfg to Scenery.cfg

Some addons also automatically add their scenery to the Scenery.cfg file and save the prior version with a "useful name".

Eg.
Scenery_CFG_Before_German Airports 2 - Cologne-Bonn _was_installed.cfg
SCENERY_CFG_Before_LAGO_Emma2004_5-15-2004_1246.TXT
scenery_beforeUK2000install.cfg
VisualFlightLondon1.2aInstallBackup.cfg

Hi Alastair,
Good thing I just moved the FS9 .cfg files one at a time to see which one was needed for bootup. This all started out as I added Carribean island scenery. I also wanted to add Razek's Puerto Rican scenery over the top of Jorge Robles' Puerto Rican mesh. I had noticed that some addon scenery seemed to locate within the Scenery and Texture folders already within Addon Scenery. Other Addon Scenery is located in separate Scenery and Texture folders and wondered why that was. My Odyssey has turned into a quagmire.

Hi Waco,

If it helps, here are a few basic points.

1. FS2004 doesn't care where your scenery is, as long as the reference to it is correct in the scenery.cfg file. Most of my addons are in an H:\Scenery folder containing sub-folders for the different countries. About the only scenery in the default \FS2004\Addon Scenery folder are the likes of Ultimate Terrain, which needs to be in the default location because it selectively disables some of the default scenery files.

2. FS2004 will always select the highest resolution scenery available, regardless of priority listing, except ....

3. where you have more than one set of mesh at the same resolution, when FS2004 will use the set with the lowest priority listing. Thus, as I have the full set of FSGenesis mesh as well as other "specialist area" meshes that I want to be used in preference to the FSGenesis mesh, I've removed the FSGenesis mesh from its default location in \FS2004\Scenery\World\Scenery and placed the files in sets separated by resolution at the top of the scenery list. As all other mesh sets are thus at a lower priority than the FSGenesis ones, they are used instead.

If your current set-up appears to be a little "muddled", with Addon Scenery folders in various locations, but the individual addon sceneries are still in discrete sets (Scenery folders with their own Scenery and Texture sub-folders, rather than all scenery files being in \Addon Scenery\Scenery and all textures being in \Addon Scenery\Texture) then you could consider creating your own Scenery "holding folder" and moving the discrete sets into it, then editing the entries in the FS2004 Scenery library to "point" to the correct (new) location, and thus remove yourself from your "quagmire" !

Cheers,

Alastair
