Just a question.

I currently have the Q9300 (2.5 GHz) overclocked to 3.3 GHz.
Would there be any reasonable difference getting the Q9650?
I would of course be wanting to OC this one too.

Thanks

Ben

There would be a difference. I don't think it would be worth the price though. If you want to upgrade go for the Q9550. It is much cheaper and can easily overclock to 3.4 GHz.

The Q9650 should clock to 4ghz,and more, easily enough....i've the QX version(unlocked multi) and find it a great performer.

I was looking on eBay and see that I can pic one up for about $328 US from a seller with a good rep.
Is that reasonable?

I have the Q9650 comfortably overclocked (on air) to 3.4 ghz and am doing well with it.

If it is brand new, yes.

That's they key.. You're already running a good, high-cache, quad-core at well over 3Ghz.

While you might get improved performance on paper.. the improvement that you'll actually appreciate, will not be worth hundreds of dollars(unless you're gonna crank something bumping 4Ghz)..

We're in similar boats. We might as well wait until the hi-end i7s are given away .. before upgrading.

Ben

They both have 12mb cache. All Q9650's do. In fact the Q9450's and Q9550's do too.

I'm not seeing the QX9650 on the Newegg roster anymore. What's up with that?

Thanks, anyway. That's the CPU that's in my rig already. I was just curious why it's not on Newegg anymore. It was there up until last week.

They're getting on a bit now...same with the QX9770. I7 965 is the new king.

I also have a Q9650. I would have absolutley no idea how to overclock it. Is it really worth it?
I don't spend too much time playing games and mainly use it for image processing.

Most definitely :)

The only difference between a Q9300 and a Q9650 is the CPU speed (2.5 vs 3Ghz), amount L2 Cache (6MB vs 12Mb) and the multiplicator (7 vs 9).

If you're happy with your 9300, keep it and save the money for an i7 system.

I have my doubts that a quad on 4Ghz can run 24/7 on air cooling.

Ohh but it can.....and does, providing you've a decent cooler. 4GHZ overclocks are relatively tame these days.

Hm, 444Mhz FSB multiplied by 9...could make for a VCore of 1.24 or .25...yeah, should be within limits. Maybe scratching at the 70°C mark per core...

My qx9650 @ 4ghz runs a vcore of 1.4ish and temps around 60°C.
