Hi All,

Thanks for the encouragement.

Shadow Wolf, the flak is the same as a US escort Carrier, as are the damage boxes and systems.

The only thing that I know about the DP files, is how to move the smoke effects and wake effects.

Cheers,

Stuart

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Ships Add-Ons

Description: GMax model of HMS Starling.

In the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II, Starling was the flagship of Captain Frederic John Walker's 2nd Support Group, a flotilla of six sloops not tied down to convoy protection, but free to hunt down U-boats wherever found. Starling participated in the sinking of fourteen U-boats.

Cheers,

Stuart277

Awesome, simply awesome.

Now, where's Shessi's U441... (a hunting we will go, a hunting we will go ...) :ernae:

PS Sloops of this class also served in the Indian ocean & a couple made out into the Pacific with the BPF in '45.

Nice work Stuart. I tried her out in a test mission and she looks great. One hurdle I was unable to get over was the ship name in MB. I added HMS Starling to the discrip.dat but when I declare her nationality as British all I come up with is "no name".
In fact, none of the destroyer name designations ( DD-???) show up under the British nationality. If I change the nationality designation in MB to USA, German, or Japan....the name list with all the DD-??? numbers appears normal. Since there were 14 of these ships I had wanted to use the correct names in any missions. The [MISC DATA] in the DP appears normal, so I'm stumped. Got to be something simple.

Worthless, my guess is the object family number needs changing.

I suggested to Stuart that he use a dp based on the VN SRoberts DE as a quick & dirty way of getting her into CFS 2, but it really needs a "Blue Devil" style dp building for her.

If the object family is wrong, you'll get the no name issue in MB.

Hope this helps.

August 7th, 2013, 08:05
First thing I tried UT. I'm assuming you mean Unit Family. It's set for #5 ship or boat. Then I substituted the DP from
GC_Flower_Class_Corvette, deleted the CDP by the way. But I'm still not seeing the discrip.dat names.

Thanaks!

Worthless
August 7th, 2013, 10:09
I added HMS Starling to the discrip.dat .

I should have said callsign, not discrip.dat.

Worthless
August 7th, 2013, 10:28
Ok! Now I know what had me stumped. All of ship numbers for British destroyers only,in my callsign.dat file had an error (16 instead of 15) in the final digit combination, that designates the ship catagory. I did not find this error in the USA, Japan or German ship codes.

# British Destroyer
DD-101,1,5,16......change to 15 and all is well.

BTW.....I found this same error in the stock callsign.dat files in all my installs.

You just filled a very important gap in CFS2 WWII naval fleets. Queen Elizabeth battleship reminds me of a famous Med episode:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Alexandria_%281941%29

where Italians showed how much they had to improvise to keep up with their German allies. A bravery act which influenced very little the course of WWII.

One of the few WWII Italian manned torpedoes which survived the war, called by Royal Italian Navy maiale (hog), it's on display in La Spezia Naval museum, with mannequins dressed in very rudimental original wetsuits riding it.

Cheers!

Devildog73
October 22nd, 2013, 12:17
Hey Stuart,
Any chance we could convince you to build some British aircraft carriers that are true to length and width to CFS2 aircraft?

It has always seemed to me that our carriers are too narrow and too short compared to reality of seeing fighters take off from half to 1/3 of the carrier deck in length. They also seem way to low in the water. Carriers flight decks sit extremely high out of the water.

Here in CFS2 land, we have to mod the ship.cfg just to get planes to use the entire length of the flight deck just to get airborne.
THAT is not realistic.

I have had to use stock USS Enterprise and USS Essex as BPF carriers and then rename them to BPF carriers.
None of the VN_HMS carriers are long enough to get a Corsair off the deck without jacking up the WEP in the air file AND modifying the ship.cfg.

I know that RN aircraft have a stall speed down in the double digits while US planes are in the triple digit stall speeds.
That helps, EXCEPT in US built Corsairs and Hellcats in the BPF.

I have checked the stock USS Enterprise and it is close real world size at the flight deck. The info I found says the flight deck is 802 feet long and 109.5 feet wide. When I port the stock MS model back into gMax the size is 798 feet long and 113.5 feet wide.

The prob with CFS2 is that none of the stock player aircraft but for the P-38 give more lift when you lower the flaps. If the aircraft had the right amout of lift with flaps down the AI would crash when trying to land.

Hi all,

I would like to thank you for your nice comments.

It is quite fun doing the ships.

It is not very difficult, once you get the hang of GMax.

For comments regarding 'output', I have made 'templates' of a few weapons and a couple of hulls. So, effectively the hulls of the Cruisers are just enlarged versons of the destroyer hulls and this really speeds up the process, cut and paste, so to speak.

My texturing is only OK, not Colin or Uncltgt quality, but is passable.

Most of the 'variety' of ships within each class only differ in armament, so too avoid the 100 ship problem, pick one you like.

Same with the modelling, it ain't Usio, but they are only targets (except for the carriers).

No DP file skills yet, but I might (only might) get into those.

I do intend to have a go at a lot of ships over the next year or so, there are a lot of Italian, French and Dutch ships 'missing' as well as few IJN and US ships.

Cheers,

Stuart

Description: GMax models for CFS2 of the The Arethusa class was a class of four light cruisers built for the Royal Navy between 1933 and 1937 and that served in World War II.

The Arethusas were a smaller version of the Amphion (HMAS Perth) class. The design was judged to be the minimum required for a "trade route cruiser" to counter the threat of the auxiliary cruiser over which, even with their reduced armament, they would enjoy a comfortable superiority.

DP is form the VN Ajax, so it probably needs upgrading.

There are two sets:

1940 with a catapult ready to go, but not set up for catapult launch (cfg files are not my go)
1942 with quad 2 pounders replacing the catapults, as well as extra AA.

Cheers,

Stuart

A BIG thank you to Stu!:guinness:

These cruisers, his destroyers and some others of his Royal Navy ships will be in the BPF missions and campaigns.

I am completely reworking the Meridian missions based on more complete and accurate information provided to me by John B.

I have also replaced the AH_Seafire with GB_Seafire_Mk15_Late from A.F. Scrub found here in the library. Its performance is much more accurate to the actual Seafire. AH's was a bit under powered, under performing.

I don't know yet when I will have all of the new missions built, but am working hard on them this week. My next Masters degree classes start the 11th and I will not have a lot of free time then until Christmas break.

Once again, THANK YOU Stuart!:icon29:

Stu, one request: Can you see your way clear to make some BPF carriers with longer-wider decks than available right now. I am really having to modify power settings in the air files on Corsairs and Hellcats to get them airborne off the current selection of carriers in CFS2. Right now I am using the USS Enterprise CV-6 and renaming it as HMS Victorious. It is the only carrier that I can get airborne off of.

Thanks for your great work Stu.

I also enjoyed much with your IJN Escort Carriers.

I would like to request you to consider to built Japanese BB "Nagato" & Japanese DD "Shimakaze" in the future when you have a time.

If ever you are interested, I'm willing to assist you to gather info about these ships.

Thanks a lot again. More power!

Nice camo patterns Dombral:applause::medals:, I hope you will upload them soon.

DD73

Heavily laden take-offs from the "I" class is hairy, but it can be done, I tried some test missions using the OH F4U1a & F6F3. So long as the carrier is steaming at 30ts, & you start the take off roll from the rear elevator (I appreciate not terribly true to life), you'll make it into the air. If you give it a single notch of flap as you pass the island, & you resist the temptation to pull the nose up as you cross the bow, you can get enough airspeed irrespective of the wind state. Just raise the flaps as your airspeed picks up. :barf:

I looked at the respective flightdeck sizes, the Enterprise is (roughly) 250mtrs long by 34mtrs wide, whereas the "I" class were 230mtrs long by 30mtrs wide. The difference doesn't sound like much, but the difference in width is enough room to sit 2 x F4Fs abreast on the big E's flight deck, & not so for the RN "I" boats. Extrapolating draght measurements & profile drawings I reckon the RN carrier deck was c.10mtrs above water level, whereas the Big "E" sat at c.14mtrs, some 40% higher than the RN carrier's deck. Does the Enterprise look very much larger (side by side) than the VN Illustrious in game?

Hi Devildog
Thank you for you kind comments.:jump:
With regard to the RN Carriers, I compared the VN_Illustrious with the SHA_Yorktown and they look in the correct proportion in terms of length, beam and height. (see attachments)
I have also tested the OH Corsair, OH Hellcat and OH Avenger loaded with Heavy Bombs and have had no problems with take-off from the VN_Illustrious. The ships is set at 30knots and no wind.
I am not sure why you are having problems with take off.

LOL,
In my attempt to be accurate, I slowed the carriers down to 20 knots. Some of the escort ships in CFS2 are not made to run above 20 knots. Shoot, the HMS Ocean and Colossus class escort carriers are made with top speeds well below 20 Knots.
I don't know how to modify their speed capabilities.

Hi Devildog
You can modify a ships speed by opening the DP file in wordpad (or similar) and scrolling down to the [MISC_DATA] section. Here you will find something like the one below (VN_Victorious_1945) from UncleTgt.
The speeds are in kilometres per hour.

[MISC_DATA]
unit_family=7
category=13
allegiance=1
min_speed=0
cruise_speed=55
max_speed=55
entered_service=5/15/41
priority=9
hardness=12

Hmmm! looks like the Victorious is pretty quick in cruise mode!!!
:icon_lol:

PS HMS Colossus speed is 25 knots (45Kph), according to wiki

Max speed is correct as she was capable of 30Kts. Cruise for max range would be just under half that, say 14Kts or round about 26Km/h.

I wounder if I could trouble you for a couple more ships.

HMS Revenge --- REVENGE class battleship
HMS Caledon --- CALEDON class Light Cruiser
HMS Carysfort --- CAROLINE class Light Cruiser

I need those three ships for the Tondern Raid

I have your Arethusa class and your V and W destroyers. I also have the HMS Furious. All that is missing now are those three. I have all of the specs if you need them.

here is a list of the ships in the Tondern Raid.
On 17th July Operation F7 left Rosyth dockyard in Scotland made up of the following:

HMS Furious

'Force A'
1st Light Cruiser Squadron:
HMS Caledon --- CALEDON class Light Cruiser
HMS Galatea --- ARETHUSA class Light Cruiser
HMS Royalist --- ARETHUSA class Light Cruiser
HMS Phaeton --- ARETHUSA class Light Cruiser
HMS Inconstant --- ARETHUSA class Light Cruiser

along with destroyer escorts.

'Force B'
1st Battle Squadron:
HMS Revenge --- Revenge class battleship
HMS Royal Oak --- Revenge class battleship
HMS Royal Sovereign --- Revenge class battleship
HMS Resolution --- Revenge class battleship
HMS Ramillies --- Revenge class battleship

7th Light Cruiser Squadron:
HMS Carysfort --- CAROLINE class Light Cruiser
HMS Aurora --- ARETHUSA class Light Cruiser
HMS Penelope --- ARETHUSA class Light Cruiser
HMS Undaunted --- ARETHUSA class Light Cruiser

along with destroyer escorts.

Its funny to note that every ship in the Arethusa class was in on this mission.

Let me know what you think.

I tried them out in a mission with some other Italian warships. They look beautiful but instead of following the rest of the fleet line astern they steer due north at twice the speed of the other ships.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I think Rami had a similar problem with his Operation Pedestal convoy.

what is the category in the DP? I'm on my laptop so I cant look right now. it sounds like its either unarmed or the wrong category. I'm not sure what else it could be.

Hi Kdriver
The DP file is the same as the PHP project Nevada Class Battleship.
There are no guns in this DP.
If you want it to have guns, just substitute the DP from the stock Nevada (or any other similar battleship) then copy and paste these files into the appropriate places.

Its the convoy bug. Without the atleast one gun, It doesn't have to do any damage, the ships will turn north and run for the hills as soon as enemy planes are sited.

I've slowly been making new DPs for all of Stuarts ships. I'm using the gmax models to help map the coords. Its slow because I have to open both DPed and gmax. Then adjust all of the boxes and parts to fit.

I have a few finished. As soon as I get enough completed, i plan on sending them to Stuart for his thoughts. If he like them then he can add them to the downloads.

Hi Stuart,

Fantastic work!
These ships are really needed for the battle of Pacific.
Katori was a missing piece for the missions of battle of Truk.
Myoko class, as well, are needed for many missions as like as the battle of Leyte.

If you still have a plan to build IJN ships, I would like to ask your consideration for Nagato Class BB.
She is needed for missions for the battle of Mariana & battle of Leyte.
We already have excellent VN Nagato class here in outhouse but she is earlier model before a refit before a war starts..

Also we don't have IJN Shimakaze DD.
We need her for missions for the battle of Leyte.

You may be busy for your work but if you have time in the future, I would like you to consider about this.
Anyway, I am already enjoying your ships all the time.
Thanks again.

Salut Dombral:wavey:

Hi Dombral
The catapult is there, however, it was made using 10 polygons and an alpha channel.
The scaffolding looks a bit 'skinny'.
I will do some work on the alpha channeI and see how it looks.
If you wish, I can make a solid catapult with 10 polygons, as I have done in the past, or a scaffolded catapult with 240-300 polygons.
I use google translate for this as my french is restricted to 'two beers please'.
Cheers

I tested all japan bomb pack in orde to get a similar bomb to use like 250kg bomb, but the most "similar" are not similar.

Outstanding work Stuart.

So the only party without ships are the Germans. Not sure what would be left for them. Maybe a few early WWI ships or early U-boats.

You know what would be nice, some small craft. I was thinking of some of the early Itialian wooden speed boats. Or possibly a few motor yachts for Pearl.

Just some ideas incase the well is drying up.

Excellent work on these...you have found the touch of Collin and Mas. Good details with excellent frame rates. Collin would be so proud! :very_drunk:

Man Stuart, is there anything left in the Japanese Imperial Navy left for you to model? :biggrin-new:

If you've run out of subjects (?), how about some historically correct Marus?

Hi Gaucho
I wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year.:santahat:
This looks very nice, :applause:I would like to pick up some of your art skills, mine are very basic with Paint Shop Pro.
I am getting better at texturing models, which makes it better for other artists.
Cheers

I wish you the jolliest of times too and a prosperous New Year...
PSP is a very user friendly program and, to me, it is much easier to use than Photoshop... although my son - who
spend 4 years in college using it for graphic arts - thinks it is easy to use..
I am always available to point you in the right direction skills-wise... I do know a few tricks... with PSP
Again, at your disposal..
