Female pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary ferried aircraft from the factories to the squadrons during the war, if allowed they would have knocked the stuffing out of the jerries.:)

They really were the unsung hero's.
They flew all types of aircraft with minimal training on each type.

They flew in unarmed aircraft and I believe some of their number succumbed to attack by enemy intruders,

I met Mary Ellis, when I was a kid , she used to manage the local airfield (with her husband) ..... short version....
had taken bicycle ride over there to watch the planes ; someone had left the hangar doors open , ....
lady and a gent looking over a BA Swallow that was based there (G-AFGE) ... so I got caught and told to come here and see the aeroplane properly.
