If you have a favorite tube, what is it?

Pics would be good too!

Here's mine... the Boeing 307 Stratoliner

(I know yall weren't expecting a shop heater out of me :d)

Willy,

I love that Merc Air paint....is it available? Reminds me of those uber cool 1950s era car club/gang motifs.

I don't have a pic to post at the moment, but my favorite tube liner (if it can actually be classified as a tube liner) is the Lockheed Electa L-10A.

If there's a Coastie paint for it, Tim will be there "with bells on!":kilroy:

I guess my favorite commercial tube would have to be the SMS freeware MD-11. If you can even count any vintage airliner as a "tube," I suppose any version of the Connie would be near the top of my list! But also lurking near the top are the Sahara and the Brabazon. I can't help it, I like big aircraft! I wonder if a C-5A could be converted to pax use...

Links to everything but the Connies (we all know where to get those...):

Sahara: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=84593
Brabazon: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=110955

Depends on your definition of Tube... I fly the MAAM-SIM Dakota when I want a Tube, which isn't very often. By some modern definitions, the Dak is more of a bush-plane than an airliner!
(no pictures now, I am at school)

The Sahara is a plane I had not seen before...Thanks for the link.

The Brabazon link was the same as for the Sahara. I found it though with no problem...the zip name is brab_01.zip

That was on purpose as I know that some folks actually like jets. I don't understand it, but they do. :d

Actually I do like the DeHavilland Comet. David Maltby made an excellant one that I can't recommend enough.

Tom, I've got the civil version of the Sahara in Air France paint flying around as AI. Also have a Brabazon flying circuits from London to Washington DC daily.

Depends on your definition of Tube

Mine is pretty loose and roughly translates to aircraft that were designed to be airliners. A DC-3 is well within that definition as would be the Lockheed L-10 Electra and the Lancastrian.

Willy,

Thanks for reminding me about the Comet...such a sleek aircraft. When I look at that plane, I think of Super Heroes....it looks like the kind of plane that Super Heroes would use to get around when they were too tired to fly on their own. Not sure what British Super Heroes would be like though....

Lacier than a curtain

PS: No insult toward the British people intended. The only names for Super Heroes I could think of that had a British flair were Knicker Man and Bloody Bloke...comes from watching too much Hackney British comedy during my youth.

You have almost gotta love all of David Maltaby's aircraft. They're basically the only heavies that I regularly fly with enthusiasm (that came out a bit wrong - displays my spelling ability).

^^

Bloody Bloke? I can think of something better than that. Oh. Wait. No I can't. Poo. Carry On OBIO (our latest comedy title production)

British Superheroes?

Who could forget Bananaman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bananaman).

Or the infamous Supergran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supergran).

As for tubes, love the Comet, 707, Lancastrian, Connie and Brabazon. But for me first place goes too....

My favourite airliner is definitely the Dreamfleet B727! Such a beautiful airplane :jump:

I tend to think more of 'HJG' than 'Calclassics' when I hear the term 'Tubeliner'. Of the former, love the Connie/Starliner and Convair twins. Of the latter, favor the classic 707, 727, Convair 990 and this one . .

Lovely image; VC-10, Victor and Vulcan all in one shot.....

Victor carries tubes rather than is one. Reminds me of 1950s spaceship drawings, that pointy nose and the inset windows.

He even put in an airfield in the backdrop.

Well...thinking slightly outside the box, how about all the wonderful AI airlines we are getting!
Flying a tube can be fairly routine, and I reckon the scenery plays a big part in the experience.

Look at these two shots - without:
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/CHARL_photos/Flightsim%202/AIfs92009-02-2512-28-43-68.jpg
...and with, AI.

They are getting more sophisticated too - thrust reverse, flaps, spoilers, flexing wings:
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/CHARL_photos/Flightsim%202/AIfs92009-02-2512-48-28-28.jpg

And today, for the first time, nosewheel steering from the Russian AI group.

It changes the way you regard AI on the ground.

Isn't it amazing, just when you thought FS had reached its development level, someone comes along and ups the ante, again!

Technically it was considered an airliner....and it was even vaguely tube shaped, which in its time was extremely advanced. Granted it wasn't the biggest airliner on the block but when it came out it was the fastest. I humbly present the 1930's version of the Learjet...the Lockheed Vega.:applause:

There's a lot of great airliner stuff out there - but these two stand out head and shoulders above the crowd in my estimation:

Prop-driven - FDZigns Constellation. With Banana Bob's prop textures, this bird just shines.

Jet - AlliedFS Caravelle.

The amazing thing is these are both freeware, at levels of quality that many payware planes have yet to attain.

There appears to be controversy about this, although Sports Illustrated cover girl Bar Refaeli isn't showing more flesh than you'd see on any beach...

Now i don't want to pick Southwest up on hypocrisy here, but for the Flightglobal reading sisterhood out there i feel i have to ask this question. Wasn't Southwest the airline that late last year banned Kyla Ebbert from boarding a flight after adjudging her skirt to be too short? And if so, isn't it a little rich to be using sex so overtly now to publicise the brand?

And so on...

There can be only one!

<---- (Or -2, in this case.. ;) )

Second on the list would be the FsX A2A Stratocruiser, David Maltby's tubes are high on my list as well.

Hi there,

As far as I'm concerned my favorite tube is a Douglas series (Dc-2, -3 (incl. Li-2), -4 (incl. Carvair), -5 and -6 all versions). Love to fly that bunch.

Having said so I also like to fly the Connies (L-049 by FSDZigns and 749 by Paco Sanchez) and the Starliner (L-1649A) by Manfred Jahn very much.

I'm very eagerly looking forward to the new L-749/C-121A and the L-1049G/C-121C series which are under construction at Manfred Jahn's works. (see forum CalClassic)

Cheers,
Maarten
