North American P-51C-10-NT, (serial unknown), 'Daisy Mae' of Capt. Woodrow "Woody" Crockett, 100th FS, Ramitelli, Italy, November 1944.
Capt. Woodrow "Woody" Crockett joined the Army as a private in 1940 and was soon honored as "Model Soldier of the Regiment" in the service's first all-black field artillery unit. In time, he was assigned to Class 43-C at Tuskegee Army Air Field and graduated on 25 March 1943. Crockett's 15-month tour with the 100th saw him fly 149 combat missions. His quick actions saved William Hill when two Mustangs collided on take-off at Ramitelli on 16 November 1944, and he was rewarded with the soldier's medal as a result of his bravery on his date Crockett remained in the Air Force and flew 45 missions in the Korean War, before finally retiring in 1970. The nose art on Daisy Mae was the result of the happy convergence between the names of a character in Al Capp's Lil' Abner comic strip and Crockett's wife, the former Daisy Juanita McMurry.
