View Full Version : FSX native AVRO Tutor

Postbaer61

I want to let you know, that i have converted Nigel's great AVRO 621 Tutor models to FSX native format,
which means, that it will work also in P3Dv4+

Nigel gave again his kind permission, to publish my conversions,
until he had done his own FSX Native version.

So here we go again

The conversions

https://www.mediafire.com/file/lu4m8...Part1.zip/file (https://www.mediafire.com/file/lu4m8o772rsdd1q/FSX_native_AVRO_Tutor_port_over_Part1.zip/file)

I have also updated the FSX native 621 and Trainer models
with a new smaller navlight effect, the new models have to
redownloaded .

https://www.mediafire.com/file/89wao..._over.zip/file (https://www.mediafire.com/file/89waosn4x9jrovw/FSX_native_AVRO_621_port_over.zip/file)

Great! Thank you for your efforts and Nigel for his permission.
Off to download

Thank you very much Nigel and Ulrich! Again!!

One small blip in Ulrich's Tutor download (although it might just be a corrupt download on my part), but easily fixed:
the model.cowl cfg is incomplete, it only says:

[models]
normal=cowl

As a result, none of the planes using model=cowl will show. It should read:

[models]
normal=cowl_FSXn
interior=cowl_FSXn_int

Doing this small change, and all the model=cowl planes show just fine. Just in case anyone else is having this problem.

Thank you once again, these planes are just spectacular in P3Dv4.

Sorry for the circumstances, i have just correct this bug.

Sorry, something else with the model.cowl planes came up. I took a bit longer flight, and it looks like in the model.cowl, the exterior model "cowl_FSXn" may need a bit more fixing. While the model=cowl planes now appear, some of the exterior animations, like the ailerons and
the rudder, don't work. They do on the other models I've tried.

Thanks again for all your work Ulrich. It's just little fixes.

..and I just restarted the sim and all the model=cowl plane animations now seem to be working the way they should. Oh well <scratches head>.
maybe it was just something in my controls, or the model with the fixes just needed reloading.

Thanks again - Rob

PS: the little details on this plane, especially when I zoom in close, just keep blowing me away...

Hi all ,
I have attached the missing red and green nav lights now to all
native models.
You can redownload the files, to get the updates.

The pilot head movement have to be complet new animated,
for a correct funktion, so the current state represents a compromise.
Also the vc lighting don't work very well in P3Dv4,
so i have use the fx_vclight.fx variant in the aircraft.cfg.
As it is, is the best result i could get, so we have to live with that compromiss, until Nigel brings the real native version.
I can only recommend to use Nigel's port over models for FSX and P3Dv1-3,
my converted FSX native models are intended primarily for P3Dv4 users,
who will not be able to enjoy Nigel's Avros until he releases his FSX original native models.
I hope, i have corrected the badest bugs now .
Thanks for your Patience

Hi all,
I downloaded the 2 new models with nav lights activated.
However, the lights are not visible because the effect names end with an "s"

This causes an error in P3D
error = Failed to load visual effect "fx_navgres"

So, I copied the effect "fx_navgre.fx" and renamed "fx_navgres.fx" to get the nav light lit

Also, both models have their throttle control set at 4% idle. Which makes it move forward.

Hello Ulrich,
Sorry if I come back with new errors detected by P3D v4.4.
After manipulating all the commands and starting the engine, there are still some problems:

1 / error = Failed to load visual effect "fx_avro621_startup_v1"

2 / Four errors resulting from the compilation of the mdl file. It seems that the compilation removes the spaces in the statements if {1} els {0} by replacing them with if {1} els {0}.
(file attached)

3 / The throttle is not at idle but at 4%. The parking brake must be applied to stop the aircraft.

Hello Jean,

regarding point 1

the missing fx_avro621_startup_v1 effect
can be fixed by changing the effect Settings
in the _AVRO_621 aircraft.cfg file.

replace

startup = fx_avro621_startup_v1

with

startup = fx_engstrt

like in the other Avro's models.
There was no effects files in the FSX port over Versions.

regarding point 2

I had a look into the modeldef.XML of the avro's and found nothing unusual with the magnetos settings,
but i'm no XML expert, so the author of the custom XML files could help here more.

regarding point 3

I have noticed too, that the throttle have its idle by 4%, but there are also a custom throttle animation,
which is specific and the XML author can sure tell us why it is.

I will change the start effect entry with the next update.
Thank you.

Hello Ulrich,

Yes, actually, the code is correct in the modeldef.xml.

It is at the time of compilation that the error may be created.

However, it is not a problem since it does not affect the operation of the magnetos switches.

thank you again for your availability and for the solutions that you bring to our requests.

Correct, in the aircraft.cfg the effect 'fx_avro621_startup_v1' was an experimental effect which I decided against, and therefore commented out.

Ulrich; thank you for highlighting the correct effect:

startup = fx_engstrt

which is a stock effect in FS2004 and FSX.

Re the Tutor rolling on start up with it's minimum 4% throttle setting, the 621 also has a minimum 4% throttle setting, but doesn't roll on
start up, and I think I see why. The 621 has a smaller engine, 5 cylinders with max 160 hp vs the Tutor's 7 cylinders with max 245 rpm,
according to the aircrafts' cfg's. But both have a minimum throttle setting of 4%. The result is that the 621 loads with it's idle at about
6900 rpm, while the Tutor loads with it's idle at about 7900 rpm. So I guess hence the Tutor's rolling on start up.

Just to see what would happen, I reduced the Tutor's min_throttle_limit from 0.004000 to .002000, and the plane now loads with a minimum
idle of about 6900 rpm, and no more rolling.

But I didn't look closely at what happens to the throttle animation. I'll have to go back and do that.

Thanks again Nigel and Ulrich for bringing such a great plane to FSX and P3Dv4.

Nah. It's about a tailwheel or lack of it. The tailskid on earlier 621s creates plenty of drag.

Ok, no expert here, far from that...just noticed that no effect when starting engine on Avro planes(using P3DV4 only) and looking at effects folder
fx_engstrt.fx
fx_engstrt_cub.fx
fx_engstrt_DHC2.fx
fx_engstrt_fw190.fx
fx_engstrt_jenny.fx
fx_engstrt_ME109.fx

so, tried to change aircraft.cfg to fx_engstrt.fx and now I see some smoke, whatever the reason...wonder if P3D adds .fx at the very end because some planes have their specific engine start effect with the .fx at the end. Please enlight me. Much obliged.

Hi Beaufighter,

The effects in the "Effects" folder do have an .fx extension.
But, in the files "aircraft.cfg", do not add it to the name of the effect.
An example, the aircraft.cfg file of the F-22 of the default P3D v4.4 flight:

[EFFECTS]
wake = fx_wake
water = fx_spray
dirt = fx_tchdrt
concrete = fx_sparks
touchdown = fx_tchdwn_m, 1
EngineFire = fx_engfire_f18

However, these files have the extension .fx in the "Effects" folder of P3D.

Hi Jean,

All four files can be used in P3Dv4+.

There are no separate versions for FSX or P3Dv4,
they are all FSX natives with xml gauges.

All converted model versions will work in FSX and P3D 1-4+ .

Avro Tutor
If you want to see the compas in 2D windows by clicking on it in the virtual cockpit, (as you can do it in the Avro 621 or Trainer), add this line in the Panel.cfg [Window03]

Hi Ulrich
Thank you to Nigel and to the team.
But converting a FS9 model to an FSX native format is also a big job, especially if it also goes perfectly under P3Dv4.
Good continuation in that way.

I just HAD to take the Tutor to St. Barts... and in doing so I found that she slows down incredibly well. After a couple of circuits and bumps, I thought it was time to stop for tea. She's not slow until the slots (slats) pop out and even then with a hand on the throttle and ready feet on the rudder bar, she's a thoroughbred. Does it look like I had a good time?

In fact- my gratitude must extend to ALL these people-

Model Designer: Nigel Richards
Textures: Nigel Richards
Flight Model Design: James Banks, Milton Shupe, Pete Collis, Keith Paine
Gauges: Roman Stoviak, Nigel Richards, Keith Paine, Microsoft
Sounds: Nigel Richards
Special Effects/Gauges: Roman Stoviak

Whilst the model is just superb, the enchantment of the FDE cannot be understated. For the first time since the release of the RealAir Spit and my beloved An-2 in FSX, I pulled out my TrackiR to go blatting around in this absolute angel of the air. A first in Prepar3D... and how immeasurably more wonderful than what FSX was able to portray.

We're now adding the final touch to the AVRO - PWS-18 :-)

The FS 2004 and port over versions have been ready for sometime now. However, we decided to go Native FSX with this release in order to make the most of the full range of FSX materials and model capabilties.

I'm just Gobsmacked! This is the FREEWARE Avro Tutor from Nigel Richardson et al, brought to us by Ulrich, idling in front of the FREEWARE Bowerman from Orbx. To think I first wasted hours on an Apple IIc over wireframe mountains and a single river... not so many years (ok, decades) ago. 2019 is shaping up quite nicely indeed. The Shuttleworth Tutor flew over in an An-24, the older brother of my beautiful Annuschka, but she's loving every moment of her Colonial explorations. Now, if only Andy would fly on my wing in his Stearman, we'd be laughing!

There's something I forgot to tell you about yesterday. That tiny landing light, in Prepar3D scatters dynamo powered light just so. Peeking along the side of the fuselage for an opportune glimpse of asphalt; and watching the light splay off the REAR of the prop and reflect back into the prop disk and through ambient light cloud in front of the left leading edge of the wing, during twilight is INTOXICATING. The languid reflection and refraction slap as the prop blade arced through the light beam, whilst the engine was ticking over in a side slip towards the postage stamp sized landing strip at SABA, was to blame for AT LEAST TWO of my missed approaches.

At least, that's how I remember it. It's MY story, and I'm sticking to it. The missed approaches couldn't POSSIBLY be attributed to anything else!

Here's the sort of approach I favor in these old girls, a long continuous turn from downwind to final.... helps to keep an eye on everything nicely. Those square patterns are for the younger crowd ;)

https://i.imgur.com/1zXdS1H.jpg

Constantly adjusting bank and descent allows for establishing short final a bit high (these box kites don't really glide all that well) with the runway nicely in the V...

https://i.imgur.com/YNPJxeS.jpg

Just lovely with small corrections all the way down, power fully back with the field assured we stroked onto the asphalt moments later. Watching the oleos spread is a TREAT!. We're not "too slow to fly, and not too young to die" but these carrier approaches work well in this genre of aeroplane.

When's the last time you saw something so beautiful (all married persons should wait for She Who Must Be Obeyed to leave the room BEFORE answering)?

https://i.imgur.com/693GBOi.jpg

BTW, only one hour separate the Bowerman shots from this one. The PNW in February can be a fickle mistress and while glistening in the impending sunshine 60 minutes earlier, I HAD NO IDEA I’d be sucking seat and scud running

Today, we are LOOOOOOW and SLOOOOOOW and will stay out of the way, until SXM Tower fits us in on final at the last possible moment, to minimize the disruption to traffic spacing. Now HERE'S A CLASSIC FSX PICCY- With all the discussions going on about developers moving to 64bit support, I wanted to share the old and the new. This is Nigel's incredible Tutor over Orbx Lopez Island, just South of Friday Harbor- the DEFAULT FSX airport. All of us are familiar with this bit of the world, so it made sense to choose it as a reference. Instead of FSX- this is PREPAR3D v4.4. The other FANTASTIC new bit of kit is EZDOCK v3. I upgraded from v2 and I must say the differences are more than worth while. I'm not a fan of overdone effects, but in this case, just a tiny bit makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the world. I had BEAUTIFULLY tailored EZCA files for v1 and with v2, I was never able to duplicate the small movements of the aircraft, whilst leaving the other larger effects out. WITH v3 EZCA has made ENORMOUS IMPROVEMENTS in customizability- and once again, my world is in constant motion- FANTASTIC!

Anyhooooo- enough blabbering- back to Nigel's beauty-

Now, WHO amongst us, doesn't recognize this bit of the world....?

One of my very favorite places in the Orbx World- Orca's Island... wonder how they got THAT name?

https://i.imgur.com/pYjapnb.jpg

Can you say, "Glorious"? The clouds are grey lenticulars spilling off the hills. The weather is typical PNW, and yet, a hole in the cloud deck allowed for gold to spill on silk and dope and set it afire. For the kid in the weeds, staring with longing at this incredible flying machine, can you imagine the excitement when it stopped in front, and a very British voice called out, "Want to go up for a few circuits and bumps lad?" It must have made his day- much like this aeroplane makes mine...

https://i.imgur.com/Y8miD91.jpg

It's my lucky day, the Trolly Dolly is shopping and I've got the house all to myself. The speakers are turned up, that incredibly Lynx is rattling the good china, and this old girl wants some of my attention...

https://i.imgur.com/UDsUVZQ.jpg

I used to eat my lunch in a dusty hangar, housing a still dustier Stearman, holding on to the baseball bat and yelling, "Clear Prop!" when I was mostly sure there was no one in earshot. This combination takes me back. Most know I am a HUGE ORBX fan, but this little jewel is special, just like Innsbruck and the Tutor- breathtaking!

Most know I am a HUGE ORBX fan, but this little jewel is special, just like Innsbruck and the Tutor- breathtaking!

jankees: A fully layered paintkit will be available once we have released all of the AVRO fleet.
Most main textures were created/mapped so as to be interchangeable between variants, with a few extra files for specific items such as cowls, fins, wheels treated individually.

SO PLEASED you are enjoying them, thanks for the kind words. With the day shaping up quite nicely, and She Who Must Be Obeyed's Honey Dew List complete, I thought I'd take the Naval variant out for a spin 'round Brighton.

RW Bipe Drivers will attest to the fact that there are moments in a Biplane, where mesmerizing just doesn't begin to explain what one feels. There's something stolid about being held aloft on a perfect day, with a radial rumbling ahead, wires whistling beside, and the world rolling beneath, framed by fabric wings. It is a place where one can loose an hour or two. Where at 1000', one can leave the Salt Mines behind, and bask in self actualization.

Combine the Tutor with a comprehensive Orbx World and discover this feeling, whilst fully earthbound!

Wilco, right o'er the top. The chap in the tower was so taken aback, he had a FlyBE Q400 and an EZ Scarebus hold, whilst I puttered around and slipped on to Rwy 02. Actually, the Fish & Chips, with a Nutty Brown sounds great!

She's bloody FANTASTIC! The modeling is unsurpassed, the FDE simply grand- there's absolutely NOTHING about this aeroplane I dislike. At $50 she'd be a bargain... as it happens to be FREEWARE (above the standards of MANY a current Payware release), we ought to be thinking of ways to mail a little something to Greece!

Ok, after a cuppa, we departed Southampton, through the cut, past the Fawley Refinery... the light was getting softer, mist was rolling in and the sea was even more present than it usually is in this part of SE England...

Passing over Portsmouth, with a nod to HMS Victory, I resolved I must hoist a ration of Pussers once we were tied down. This is the PERFECT livery for this particular flypast!

https://i.imgur.com/RODJthv.jpg

It took a little poking around to find Goodwood in the dusk, what with no race tonight and all. Still, we made it down and taxyied to a bit of concrete for the night.

With the shadows lengthening, it was time to tie down, have a drink and visit the folks across the road. An appointment with a Bespoke Concierge awaits!

I'm back in the Tutor and back at St. Bart's. In the evening, it is the perfect combination to wash away the day's cares and loose myself in the "footless halls of air". There are so many things that are right about this combination. Fly Tampa's St. Maarten trio, with the Tutor is the bees knees!

https://i.imgur.com/6EScGr7.jpg

This may well be my ethereal (electronic) happy place. It's officially on the Bucket List!

https://i.imgur.com/OcO28e2.jpg

If there is any interest, I am thinking about organizing a fly-in at Maho. I don't know squat about local servers, but I am fairly adept at Vatsim. Perhaps a meet up of Bipes to do the three airports in rotation? Anyone else as wacky and wanna fly along? If so, we can set up a time to meet up at Julianna....

Just one of the things that has SO impressed me is the ground handling. Apply 2000RPM (keeping in mind that you try for about 1850 and as the IAS builds, and the prop unloads, you get 2000) and as the tail plane becomes effective, the tail lifts. The amount of rudder needed to hold center increases proportionally as the tail wheel loses contact with the asphalt. The unstick is surprising, just as the real deal. Sure, I know what the numbers are, but I am still pleasantly surprised when I realize that the mains just lost traction and my horizontal vector just changed and I realize I AM FLYING!

If you want to FEEL what it is to taxi one of these old girls- run the Tutor around a bit. Watch first from SPOT and then the VC and you will just marvel at the way the tail moves with rudder application stretching springs, and then all of a sudden as the springs stretch, the sideways moment increases. It's absolutely fantastic, but with judicious applications of differential brake you will be able to aim for a corner, and then with a burst of throttle and a jab of brake, swing the tail around and dismount whilst adjusting your silk scarf.

Set up a couple of views poking your head out of each side, and on final peer around both sides of that beautifully polished cowl.

https://i.imgur.com/oQmxcxE.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/LaySlpR.jpg

Then when you run out of angle, kick in a little rudder and opposite aileron and grab a peek at the runway, then straighten out and hold her off, just off, so that when she settles it's with a little chirp, and then spend a bit of time poking rudder to keep the triangles of asphalt equal. Keep the stick full back as you let her roll with just a modicum of brake. Then it's S-turns and head pokes all the way to the ramp.

BTW Nigel, I was able to pop in that compass fix- many thanks- for so many wonderful things. This old lady tugs at my heart strings in a visceral fashion. If anyone has a link to an actual Operations Manual for the Tutor, I'd be much obliged....

...just can't get enough of this old girl... she's grand in EVERY way!

Just curious (re both the port-overs and FSX native models) and to add more realism in screenshots etc. .. is there a way of removing the pilot from the exterior view when aircraft is parked and engine/instruments are turned 'off' ?

I came across some aircraft before where pilots disappeared when certain conditions were met (parking brake set, battery off, etc. based on type of aircraft).

I want to let you know, that i have converted Nigel's great AVRO 621 Tutor models to FSX native format,
which means, that it will work also in P3Dv4+

Nigel gave again his kind permission, to publish my conversions,
until he had done his own FSX Native version.

So here we go again

The conversions

https://www.mediafire.com/file/lu4m8...Part1.zip/file (https://www.mediafire.com/file/lu4m8o772rsdd1q/FSX_native_AVRO_Tutor_port_over_Part1.zip/file)

I have also updated the FSX native 621 and Trainer models
with a new smaller navlight effect, the new models have to
redownloaded .

https://www.mediafire.com/file/89wao..._over.zip/file (https://www.mediafire.com/file/89waosn4x9jrovw/FSX_native_AVRO_621_port_over.zip/file)

Cheers
Ulrich

Every day, I get requests to download my converted AVROS.

As mentioned in this post, i have deactivated my downloads
for Nigel Richards AVROS native FSX conversions.

Nigel Richards has released all of its original native FSX-AVRO models,
so my files are no longer necessary.

All original Nigel Richards native FSX AVRO versions are available
here in the file library under FSX Military Props.

Non-SOH members must first Register, to download here.

Thank you for your attention
