We are hard at work developing the follow on package for our Stearman project. The A75L300 is the first to be completed. Our artist Paul G has been hard at work developing schemes that will be used for this model and the 450 Pratt when developed. The versions will allow the cowl and wheel pants to be toggled on or off and an animated wing walker can be added all via the configuration manager. Here are some shots of the completed 300 Lycoming version

It might take a bit of research as to exact models used, but would the "Utterly Butterly" aircraft that were operated in this country a few years ago be a good match for this pack?

Take a peek at the Wonderful 450hp Airshow Stearman known as "General Smoke" that was campaigned for years by Earl & Paula Cherry. "General Smoke," and the Hughes Super Stearman in the EAA Museum, N121R (N5051V) are probably the quintessential Airshow versions of the type in my opinion. The most widely seen has to have been the Red Baron Squadron airplanes.

It will be a stand alone package. No prior purchase required. We envision that Lycoming 300, the 450 Pratt, a float plane and Agcat duster all included died in the package

Its been a while since we updated the thread with where we are with the Super Stearman Project, so here goes. Three models of the 4 planned are completed with additional textures in the loop. Some of the ones you have seen in the previous post reallocated to the IB75N but a new one added to the A75L300. Here it is

https://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y269/Spad54/A75L300_zpsp0m5trey.jpg (https://s7.photobucket.com/user/Spad54/media/A75L300_zpsp0m5trey.jpg.html)

The 450 Pratt and Whitney powered model is now complete awaiting additional textures. As with all models there is a unique configuration manager that allows the users to define how their aircraft will appear adding or subtracting parts

We finally found historical archival footage from the Boeing archives that allowed for an accurate modeling of the aircraft on factory installed floats. While we could not find evidence that the US Military had any Model 75s configured as float planes apparently Boeing developed the Model 76 as an export trainer / fighter variant and mounted floats on that version designating it the S76D1. It was Pratt and Whitney powered with either the Wright Junior at 320 hp or the Wright at 420 hp. We've provided for the latter. The configuration manager allows for the cowl to be removed. Replacing the land plane tie downs is a mooring float. While we can not know with certainly what the factory paint scheme was we assumed silver dope on the fabric and gray painted metal. The video we used is at the website below

As many others I'm looking forward to purchasing the super Stearman as soon as it is available. The Stearman has a special place in my heart. I grew up on a farm in Eastern Arkansas. We farmed a little bit, did custom combine work, and owned what we called a "crop dusting" business. My father flew "crop dusters" for over 20 years. My little brother took over the business after returning from the Marine Corps. Although I left home for college and never really returned, some of the strongest memories of my misspent youth are of those spent sitting on the top wing loading and refueling Stearmans getting them ready for the next trip to the field. We also bought a 7AC Champ when I was 16 and had access to it any time we weren't working. The photos were made in the early 70's (I was a school teacher by then). The photos are interesting, at least to me! The first shows my father giving last minute instructions to my younger brother before he takes off. The second is interesting because it shows my dad working 40 acre cotton field which had about ten fully grown pecan trees in it. He's doing a flat turn around a tree about five feet off the ground. The third shows what a crop dusting field in the Arkansas Delta looked like before the EPA required better handling of chemicals. That orange and silver Stearman was my dad's last. When these photots were taken we already owned a Pawnee, primarily for my brother to learn ag flying with. My dad loved Stearmans........but ultimately they shifted over to AgCats and ultimately Turbine AgCats. Sadly the business and both my father and brother are gone.....except for my memories. I apologize for the trip down memory lane but if I recall correctly a crop duster is to be included in the super Stearman package. I can't expect one to have the aluminum clad fuselage covering as the one in the photos, but at least I hope I can paint it orange and silver.

Flying both civilian and military aircraft in FSX (FS9 before that) the best part of flight simming is the memories that our virtual worlds inspire us to remember. There are no apologies necessary to any of us for remembering happy times with your Dad and your brother especially with them gone now. The scenery I have created and the repaints I have done that were memories for others here are my joy when all the hard work is over to have made someone else happy. I know that is true of all the creators here with a little experience like me and a lot of experience who were my mentors. A "little bird" told me the crop duster is in the works.

Keep the blue side up even 5 feet off the ground LOL!

This is Robert Sanderson FS9 Boeing 75 Crop duster R985 450hp model without the sprayers. If possible to have this model? The solo cockpit makes it unique.

Repaint I did for my personal use.

Any chance to have options to change this (awful) default GNS 295 to F1 GNS 430 as option (for sure) in settings menu for VC?
F1 has free SDK for this (F1 GNS completed Edition) and its 2 hours to do this I suppose (for a programmer). Pretty please! :wavey:

Its not that simple and would require a complete remodel and compile of the 3D parts supporting the GPS. With that said the one installed represents units being used in current models and portable units. So sorry I don't see that happening for this release.

As regards a GPS for the Stearman - I have successfully installed the inexpensive pop-up WeFly Works Team Auto Pilot/GPS in the Stearman & pretty well all of the other GAS models I fly.
A bit of code in Panel.cfg, [provided by WeFly], & check that in Aircraft.cfg, Autopilot=1, & you are away.
I find it very handy for long flights.
Looking forward to the Super Stearman

The sprayers and hood will be configurable through the configuration manager. The wings not. A single cockpit version is also available on the Super Stearman. It was never our intent to recreate Sanderson’s model.

Is the spinner to counteract the weight of the spray solution in the tank behind the pilot?

my understanding is that the chem hopper is in front of the pilot position, in what would otherwise be the front or forward cockpit. Behind the pilot would be too far aft for the CG. The weight
of the pesticide/weed killer is significant...

The spinner is probably typical of and part of the prop assembly... Lot's of variables available on the market from what I know of.

Is there much weight in it? I am wondering if its there for streamlining or CG balance?

The NZ Fletcher's have a rear hopper location for top dressing.

I think the Tiger Moth looks like a sprayer.

I was thinking more along the lines of powdered superphosphate distribution from a hopper, such as carried out by these Deane Baunton Fletchers, but from a Stearman.

https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/1778/fsx-aerospace-fu24-950-series/

However, here is a Wikipedia extract about aerial top dressing - its genesis appears to have been by way of dropping seed into a swamp from a tethered hot air balloon.

As far as I know we didn't have any Stearman doing ag work in NZ. A lot of Tiger Moths (prior to the introduction of the Fletcher) were converted for topdressing super etc with a hopper in place of the front cockpit.

I know Stearmans were used for ag work in the US, so I would guess that would cover liquids and solids.

Pete.

Did the Repaint of the "The Aviator" Mail Stearman ever get release in some form??

Well, I have this WIP version for the GAS freeware model I could work on.

MustangL2W
March 19th, 2019, 17:30
That scheme is great for many reasons.....

I had read "The Aviator" novel by the Late, Great, Ernest K. Gann in 1982 while I was in High School. ( bought it at Woolworth ) I had discovered Gann's books and spent about a year really devouring them one by one. When the Motion Picture staring Christopher Reeves hit the theatres, I went and saw it right away and thought it quite interesting the way the story came to life on the Big-Screen. Always a Lover of the Stearman...and Superman - The scenes in that movie were always great although this was not the same model Stearman that would have been flying the mail (if you squinted your eyes real tight....you could kinda see an M2 and it was believable!) As this new GAS Stearman package was discussed and the Post Military versions of the Stearman were discussed. I saw your postings of the repaint...got excited! Broke out the DVD and watched it again. Remebered that Christopher Reeves supposedly did his own Flying in the Movie. I was under the impression that it was going to be a part of the release, and then sort of forgotten about it until "The Aviator" and Air Mail Pilots came up in a conversation I was having the other day. This reminded me of your work and I started looking to see what happened to it! That and the Stearman I pinned into this thread on Dec 22nd, of N4734C when it was painted in 1960's Frontier Airlines paint are two of my favorite post War schemes on a saved sprayer/banner towing Stearman airframe.

Thanks guys! There's a couple options I've seen when it comes to Stearman wing tanks. Instead of stitches, I will change to round bumps. Some Stearmans have exposed tanks and some are covered. On the NASA Stearman I will go with the exposed tank.

heywooood
April 12th, 2019, 07:32
apparently it's an owner option that involves airworthiness inspections...the FAA wants to inspect the covered tanks every year but only inspect the uncovered 'painted' tanks every other year..so it's cheaper to leave them uncovered.

the aircraft owner then has to decide if the 'authenticity' of a covered tank is worth that extra cost and down time.

Or the one from "Tora! Tora! Tora!"?

I'm not even going to ask if you would possibly consider porting this to X-Plane 11. I know all too well how much effort goes into making it just for MSFS based sims. But Jesus thats purdy. My Uncle next to his at the beginning of WWII. :)

Hi Ted,

I'll have to check my version of N56059 (below) ........ hopefully the added spec/bump wing details of your 'Mail' livery (above) will be transferrable to it as well ?

Thank-you, for both of these beauties.

The N56059 bird has an all metal fuselage so it will need an update. Same for the NASA bird partial metal fuselage. Soon as I'm finished with the Howard 500, those will be next.

As for those other birds above they are different models, I only have the demo version to work with.

For some reason, this thread has become very quiet.

Hoping Ted's repaints haven't been shelved.
