View Full Version : An "Oldie" Revisited

This might have been one of the first scenery projects I did using satellite imagery for the ground texture. It was a request from someone who was familiar with this airport and many others in the same region of the country. I believe it's closed now. . .but since this is a Simulator. . .I'm simulating that it's still open.

I found some good images of the buildings, something I don't think I had originally because I used all default hangars. This time around it should look pretty close to how it was.

Saginaw Airport?

Nope, a long way off. I can tell you it's located in the Catskills.:wiggle:

Ah. My mistake. Some of the old buildings at the defunct Saginaw Airport look a little like that.

The airport I am thinking is the one a US President used when he went to his home or something like that.

Downsville?

Either way, I'm glad to see you're turning your considerable skills back to the Northeast, Ed! New York state and Pennsylvania offer a surprising amount of rolling and challenging topography. Outside metro areas, they really do present a stunning amount of rural natural beauty. The Poconos, Catskills, etc....

You are correct Mark. Downsville, White Birch, Valley View and some others....all enjoyable and scenic small strips that I have done and plan to revisit to give a facelift to.

Almost there:

Uploaded to the SOH Library.
I went to the library hoping to find this little airstrip in the Catskills. But while the screenshot is the same as above, the associated file is the previously-uploaded Airpark-Dallas.zip.

I hope it's just a simple file error and can easily be corrected.

Thanks, Ed!

Thanks, not certain why the pic changed on the Airpark-Dallas download. The Downsville upload will not be available til Rami has a chance to get it officially uploaded and access is available. I would guess not until later today or this evening.

I'm having Rami check it out. Somehow the image for Downsville has showed up on the Airpark-Dallas download. Downsville hasn't been approved yet (no e-mail from Rami confirming that yet).

A bit tight for my usual scenery test ride, but doable. I really had to study out the approach and it was still pretty tense. The Howard doesn't slow down that well coming in down a mountainside into a valley. Great little airfield!

Beautiful airport, Ed! Thanks!

I wish the tree colors in P3DV4 were a little more realistic. Not enough color differences! Pete

Update:

What can I do to fix this problem (I guess with elevation?). I do have FTX Global Vector installed, and ran the Airport Elevation Tool. That did not fix it. When I have a aircraft at different areas of the Downsville runway, the aircraft will be above ground a foot or so, or beneath the surface, as in this picture. NC

Pete, I just checked my P3D_V4.3 installation and I don't see that at all. What I can do though is do a simple flatten which should fix it. I won't be able to get to it til this evening. . .I'm getting ready to go pick up my Great Granddaughter from school and take care of her til her Mom gets off work.

Try disabling speed trees in your graphics config. It will revert to normal FSX legacy trees with nicer colors and you'll also get an FPS boost.

These trees may move with the wing and have more complex geometry but overall they look terrible imho.

Loaded the scenery in P3D_V4.3 to go fly a bit and as I looked back up the rwy. . .this was the view. Classic Early Morning in the Catskills.

Hi Ed, nice scenery...but...

My default startup position puts me in the trees way off the end of runway 06...

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=63852&stc=1

and when I do reach that end of the runway... (seems okay nearer the hangars)

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=63853&stc=1

Oh dear!

Also seem to have a jeep hanging off my static's wing...

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=63854&stc=1

Any chance of your elevation fix when done?

Cheers, A.

ps. absolutely no other scenery files for this area at all, checked and double checked.

That's interesting. I realized that mistake only minutes after posting to the uploads section so I made the correction to the runway length and start position and uploaded a new package. That new revised package should have been what everyone was downloading once it became available.

The elevation fix was uploaded this morning. As soon as Rami can get it approved it will be available.

Sorry but since both are static objects, they'll have to remain "mates", lol

Thanks for getting back on this Ed. Maybe I was too keen to download and ended up with an earlier version.
Will try another download and check.

As for the static plane & jeep, the wing is actually embedded in the jeep. Any chance of slightly shifting one or t'other ? Pretty please? Just slightly detracts from the immersion factor!

Very nice scenery and a good reason to explore an unvisited area.

Cheers, A.

Edit. Just downloaded and tested what is currently in the library, and unfortunately the start position is still in the trees as in my first post (identical files to what I already had). A.

Thank you ED, for another gem.

The flatten file file works perfect in P3D4, but the start point is indeed in woods.

I fear this is the updated airport, it had the flatten file included.
The CVX_Downsville_flatten.BGL works very well, but the
start point is befor the runway in the trees.

Nope not at all. I've been unable to sleep very well for the past few weeks getting maybe 4 hours a night sometimes less. I feel worn out and making mistakes like this is a product of that I guess. I don't seem to be able to release anything that doesn't have mistakes that require multiple updates. It's on me, no one else.

Apparently this S-55 was a regular visitor to the Catskills in the 1950's (Although I doubt if it ever actually pulled up here!)

Great little airfield. All sorted. Thanks Ed.

Pete, the trees are hand placed with the SDK Annotator, so in that sense, yea I guess they would be considered default, but based on whatever Sim you happen to be in, what lighting options you might employ (especially with all the options in P3D_V4.3).
