Hi all,

while needing a short break at RAF Gutersloh (adding details like traffic signs, fences or taxi spots burns my brain at current weather) I did my first steps to cover the air base with self made ground polys like at RAF Gutersloh. It's a very early stadium (looks good on screenshots but a lot of details have to be added :jump: ). But it's much easier to add big areas instead of miscellaneous odds and ends. Too hot for it.....

Bring on the AI Jaguars/Buccaneers.

Will there be enough parking for four squadrons?

This Brüggen will represent the mid 80s era - so stationed will be there Tornados for the most part. But if you like, you can place your own squadrons for sure. John Young did some fantastic Buccaneers (MAIW).
Currently, there are no usable AI Jaguars unfortunately. For the 70s, I would recommend also some of John Youngs Wattisham Phantoms using some RAF Brüggen repaints.

For all existing HAS there will be parkings - furthermore up to 20 specs on the main apron for visiting squadrons and three gates for military cargo or civilian visitors at the terminal. There will be five parkings as well inside the QRA continiously for the armed jets....

That is looking stunning! To me it seems like you have a lot of passion for these old RAF bases in Germany and that shows!
All the small details are making a spectacular result. I hope we soon can see the sceneries in FS! It is possible to release them as a public beta before they are 100% :-)

Thank you for bringing back some of our modern history! I have been many times to Ramstein myself and if you move on outside of the KMCC there are a lot of cold war history to be seen.

Very nice work! It does makes a great difference doesn't it!

Have you tried adding bump maps too? I can't really make out from your screens. All those seams in the concrete would come to life.

Manschy
April 10th, 2019, 00:39
Thank you, guys.
Bump maps aren't added so far. Until now, I used 2048x2048 texture sheets which I arranged haphazardly instead of a big one-piece photoground. That way, I can use far less big texture files by simultaneously crisp ground textures. Will have a look if I add bump maps indeed. Would be challenging certainly....

Dimus
April 10th, 2019, 03:23
It is actually quite simple. If you have already assigned a spec map to your GP material you can assign a bump map too. You need of course to create that bump map first and it will need to be subtle in order not to overdo it. Combined with the spec map it gives 3d feeling to the surface. Also using different spec/bump maps on painted surfaces will further diversify the look:

https://i.imgur.com/MGGR7kt.jpg

I still have not applied PBR techniques on GPs. I need to do this soon and check what more this new hype may bring.

Your method of using GPs everywhere instead of photoreal background is inspiring. I can fully understand the work involved. Keep it up!:applause:

Your shot is quite inspiring. Will give it a try definetely...One question though: Is it possible to place the bump map layer ON TOP of the markings layer? So that way, you won't have markings "above" the seams...

Sorry for the late reply Manchy, just saw your post.

The bump needs to be applied to the texture/material it represents. If this is below the markings layer then it will be below the markings. However, by applying a transparency level to the markings you get the seams showing them. Also markings can have their own bump and spec maps to represent the painted surface as different from the bare concrete. The actual markings on concrete are quite thick and often cover and fill the seams so having them above with a transparency looks quite good. I’ll see if I can find a screenshot to show you the effect.

Thank you, Dimus. Decided to delay working on the bumps until I finished my night texturing....

Even progress is slowly, it goes on. So this week I started with the first night texturing, the road lighting, because this was a little tricky to get the light beams flat on the ground without any flickering and retaining the ground structures....

Very nice Manchy! :applause:

Is the light splash a textured surface laying a small distance from the ground? If so what is this distance?

Small note: You have a stray light splash without a pole in the middle of the road at the junction on the left side of the housing area.

Ah, Eagle-Eye-Dimus is in the house :biggrin-new:

Yap, I have to locate and destroy it, thank you :applause: (Man, you have what it takes to get a beta tester...).

The light splashes to the ground are all one ground polygon, so its alpha is directly on the ground and allows the ground to shine through better than seperate added planes made as objects/planes... The screen with the Cobra shows it well.

That's good info Manschy, thanks! I have not tried that yet. In my scenery the light poles I placed are over photoreal background so I simply made a night map for the whole ground where the light splashes are simply painted on night version of the bitmap. I have tried light splash included on the light pole model itself for runway and taxiway lights, where I use a textured polygon a few centimeters from the ground.

For larger splashes like yours the GP method sounds great.

Btw I happen to be a beta tester, but it also comes with the job as ship surveyor.

At first appereance not a milestone, but to me finally the last piece of the puzzle to get more reality into the scenery.
Today I added the first bump maps to the groundpolys, to the concrete areas at first. Not many will follow because of the performance and the upload size in mind. Furthermore, most grass textures are fine enough to fake 3D vegetation....Same with buildings btw...

Crazy gorgeous - can't wait to fly out of there.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure what I have in my hangar that could, as my Milviz Phantom is dead in the water for P3D, and Dean's Jaguar is a long ways off. I haven't yet tried Dave Garwood's Hunters - I'm think they work in P3DV4 ... or ... save up for the JF Tornado, hoping it's not as much a hog in this sim as it was in FSX.

Either way - looks delightful, and will be much appreciated.

June 20th, 2019, 00:50
Thank you all!

@Dimus: Yes you are quite right. Especially the bright concrete looks a little too rough. Using that material, no air base will grant its premission to any aircraft.

@DL: I run the JF Tonka in P3Dv4 (reply #17) and man, it's worth each cent to my opinion - even if my rig is far away from latest performance (3.7 Ghz in turbo...)

Because the air base represents the late 80s, I would suggest any kind of Tornados indeed, when you are purposing to use Brüggen as your home base.

But I notice you are from Vancouver, Canada.
Those days, a lot of canadian visitors had taken an active part in many NATO exercises, so I also can imagine many RCAF aircraft like Starfighter or C-130, but also F-18. Lots of alternatives you see and fun anyway....

Hope next weeks I can do some more final steps (setting fences, final cars, 3-D grass, corrections to some bleeding ground polys...). Was really hard weeks in life so only few minutes left to get my hands on Brüggen last months.
Just to keep you in line and a proof of a living project some overviews and how the whole airfield is fitting into the surrounding ORBX-area... And that a high level of details needs some time for realisation...

Hi everybody,

I have to apologize again that I wasn't heard from again - but after getting my new rig close to christmas and after reinstalling all software components around New Year I got a complex system breakdown including a damaged graphics card :banghead: . Work of a month for nothing :sorrow:

So currently, I am imploringly waiting for the new card. Furthermore, it will take for sure about another 2 weeks to get all stuff back installed as before.
So please be patient, the project is not dead!

I got the same issue with my long, long loved CorelDraw/Photopaint last month when changing Win10 to my new rig. Now new (low cost) Corel Draw Home&Student 2019 is my choice and is working much better than the old stuff.

Take your time with RAF Brüggen you need. All the very best to you!!

Meanwhile, there seems to be a solution to get CorelDraw X4 running on Win10 as well.
Copying the whole content of the Corel CD to the harddrive. Copy the "setup.exe", rename it to "install.exe". Run "install.exe" and it will install! It's just a problem of the installer, not of the whole programme!!!!!!

Okay, back again....

Next step is still an experience to me - rain/water effects on the ground! Although I understand how to use the different maps and textures, it is still a hard job to know how to combine it for a good appearance. So there are some existing issues with the reflected scenery: It is still not the surrounding environment, and I got some breaking layers between the weather changes (hard cut borders...). Anyway, as a proof of the ongoing project, today some first pics of wet ground at Brüggen...

It's been a long time since the last shots. So after my PC system exchange, a graphics card crash directly afterwards and the necissity to reinstall all progs and addons, now some new shots will be the proof of the ongoing development.

Some final shots for now of the rain poly progress....

Puddles added to the concrete surface.s. By comparison we can see the dark dry spots where the puddles appear normally... It's a bit tricky to get varyingly wet surfaces...

https://abload.de/img/etur_rain_better_2bykq4.jpg (https://abload.de/image.php?img=etur_rain_better_2bykq4.jpg)

A little tricky was to get the dry textures of the overlay poly the same as the wet puddle textures, so the very same texture...
Oh, and I have to add, there was no issue as I assumed with the surrounding area - I only had to push the "Dynamic Reflection" controller to "high" at minimum.

Manfred,

very impressive. Your pictures bring back many good memories for me. As a little boy I often visited my grandparents who lived east of Siegen in Hessen/Germany. There was a low-flying corridor there in the seventies and eighties, which was mainly used by British jet fighters like Harrier, Jaguar, Canberra, F-4 Phantom, Lightning and later Tornados and Hawks.

They often flew together with Canadian or USAF F-4 Phantom or with German F-104 Starfighter, G-91, F-4 Phantom or Alphajets.

At that time in the cold war they flew very low, partly below the hills there.

Greetings to Wolfgang Allers! Very nice to see his name here.

Hi Manfred
With SODE you can have the barrier going up or down with a specific command:
Have a look here:
http://royalefrenchnavy.restauravia.fr/RFN-Creations.htm#Sce
Animation must be in the barrier model.
I think it is better than the wind for your beautifull scenery.

Michel, thank you very much for this valuable link. But those days, the brits had the barriers simply moved by the current start direction. So in most case, aircraft start and land against the wind, so this barrier was up. I think I will leave it as it is now.:D

Hi all.
I have to say, RAF Brüggen is still alive - it is indeed WIP, not RIP :D
But due to the Covid19 history last months and the summer time without many time to use my rig, now I finally want to show the first video of the RAF Brüggen airbase.
It is a bit frustrating to see so many people now are keen on MSFS, but I hope some users will stay with P3D temporarily.

This short video is an overview of the airbase, some more will follow shortly to show some closeups and animations....

Hi all,

sorry for delay in any way!

I have to say, that end of September, when MSFS came out, I was shocked! Realizing that at a moment´s notice so many people did seem to loose interest in P3D (especially in v4), my motivation has gone for some weeks.
Furthermore, Covid19 involved some changes regarding my job, which means I am dealing at retail.
But both things seem to be okay meanwhile - on the one hand I will not loose my job :applause: - on the other hand, RAF Brüggen was almost ready, so why stopping this scenery? I only did just loose motivation to make some videos at moment because this is too time consuming currently...

Current progress:
- Seasons are done
- BETA testing ongoing

I don't know the scenery requirements for a 4.5 version to work in 5.1 also properly. I don't own v5 and maybe someone can tell us the differences.
But because most details are compiled for 4.5 and the scenery will not come with an installer, they should also work in 5.1 as well.

Today (promised...) the final final final attachments to the scenery, but a "must do" to me: Adding a lot of mounds nearby roads or taxiways to suggest RAF Brüggen is not a flat earth area! This is what I dislike about air bases in FSX or P3D and is the icing on the cake to me at Brüggen...
Like you can see in the first shot, you can't see the aircraft at the flightline from far away because of mounts or vegetation, like in reality....

Looks very nice however, with all the trees and other vegetation, I wonder what the frame rates are in P3D V4.5?

This depends on your rig. For sure there are lots of objects and animations inside, but especially the trees are no problem. They are done as follows:

In the background, inside the forrest, I use big texture sheets with many trees on it - this doesn't need much preformance. In front of that, I place smaller sheets with less trees and in front of them I use single trees to suggest 3D trees and a big forrest. On the edge of these trees, I place mounts or vegetation lines which completes the illusion of thousands of trees ;-) . Here how to make it in two pics:

This is the shot from the sheets done in Gmax:

https://abload.de/img/trees_gmax_explanatio2ijd0.jpg (https://abload.de/image.php?img=trees_gmax_explanatio2ijd0.jpg)

And this is the same sheet like it looks inside P3D:

https://abload.de/img/trees_gmax_37fkqo.jpg

(https://abload.de/image.php?img=trees_gmax_37fkqo.jpg)So instead of many trees there are only used 6 crossed sheets for this forrest part :very_drunk:

Meanwhile, the final scenery is running fine on my i7 9700k with locked 30 frames in most views, settings most at 75 % using FSrealWX as real weather addon and UT-Live traffic as well.
I am testing Brüggen also on my much older rig which is a i5 2500 and I try to reach 20 frames with moderate settings, most set on 50 %.
Both PCs with only one monitor and 2048 x 2048 texture resolution.

Furthermore, it depends on the additional features you are liking like real weather or AI traffic, ORBX addons like Germany North.

P3D settings like Dynamic Lighting or Dynamic Reflections, shadows etc can drop your performance a lot. But with moderate settings RAF Brüggen will be fun to land, approach or just move around :running:

Hi Klaus,

thank you very much, but if you take a look around for other experts designing freeware, I am a mediocrity. Let me explain....
This doesn't mean that my work is bad, but I am no "master" in what I do. Maybe I have an unerring eye for details, but all I do is try and error or get lost in special parts of the scenery. I am a slob in designing. In most case I have no strategy how to tackle something or getting things done constructively. That's why I am already 4 years working on one scenery only!
Believe me, no one wants to learn from a person like me :biggrin-new: ....

Therefore, I have to give back your compliment and to all other freeware designer too who are able to get their work ready within much less time and much more accurate. Your sceneries are great as well, or have a look over there in the showroom of FSDeveloper - many many guys are designing in such a quality I never can attain...

But thanks. Yours and all the guys kind words are a big motivation to finally finally finish this scenery!

Okay, keep working hard to release RAF Brüggen until end of February (yes, this year).
But I noticed an issue regarding the seasonal textures. This is probably because some lua scripts will not be read correctly form different P3Dv4.* versions.

So my strong request please:

I AM LOOKING FOR USERS WHO USE P3Dv4.0 until P3Dv4.4 who want to test if the seasonal ground polygons work correctly!

Even if I think that most P3Dv4.* users already updated to 4.5, I would like to clarify if this lua issue only appears on my old PC rig or if it is caused by these lua files.

PLEASE GIVE ME A SHOUT HERE for the link....

The fact that I don’t have the time to try this today saddens me.☹️
Congratulations on the release! I have followed your efforts from the beginning and I’m looking forward to enjoy this. Screenshots coming up.

Manschy,

Your scenery is beautiful! The only problem I am experiencing is textural, with the Tornados being all black. I am sure I did something incorrect on installation, but not sure where. Maybe because I am running P3DV5.1, and the MAIW files aren't playing nice.... NC

Thank you for response, Pete.

On the one hand, I am very happy that the scenery also seems to work in P3Dv5. On the other hand, I would recommend to maybe ask over there at MAIW for a solution. But when the models appear well except for the textures, there might be a big chance to solve the problem :applause:

Pete, Thomas "TiAr" from above has the Tornados running well. Please check if you have the correct models and/or textures added! I will have a look at the link inside the manual if I have a wrong link set maybe.
So, please check if the Tornado package is the correct one for FSX/P3D, okay? The Tornados work...

EDIT: I checked the link inside the manual, the link is correct.

Hi,

You need to copy the textures from the fsx branch. (and use the models from the p3d branch)
I had those blach airplanes as well. The installation instruction isn't that clear.

What a scenery. Whow. The years of development have paid off. A real highlight.

Unfortunately I only found a little time this morning at least once
to make a short visit and do a few traffic laps.
But I will make up for that and expand it extensively in the next few days.

Klaus - your complete SODE files seem to be missed! There are no Hangar doors, no scenery trees, no walls, no QRA gates and for sure no animations. Please have a look into the manual to get the files running correctly. That stage, you have only half of the airbase working! :very_drunk:

Found the mistake for the gazelle of MAIW in my case.

The aircraft.cfg has following entry :

title=JYAI Aerospatial Gazelle AH1 Bruggen XX371
sim=JYAI_Gazelle_AI_ONLY
model=AH1

texture=Bruggen XX371 //... this must show texture=Bruggen_XX371. If you change this missing _ it will work fine. It`s a mistake from last update of MAIW. Texture folder is named wrong. Change all the other entrys in this aircraft cfg on the same way. texture=Bruggen_XX386 / texture=Bruggen_XX435 / texture=Bruggen_XX437

Never mind - all working. LOL! Been doing AI traffic for years and it took me most of today to figure out my "user errors" - I had dialed back the main traffic slider recently when changing my graphics slider settings without realising it.

Killer scenery. Fantastic atmosphere and immersive details like the GSE and 3d people. Horrendus real world weather - thanks Active Sky, LOL. Thanks so much!

Spaces after the "_ "??

klnowak
March 1st, 2021, 10:27
Your mistake is very easy..... you must delete the empty space in the texture folder. texture=Bruggen_ XX437. Between Bruggen_ and xx437 you got a empty space. delet it.... everything will work fine.

Your one is : texture=Bruggen_ XX437
must be : texture=Bruggen_XX437

I read the manual carefully. I already had SODE and registered for P3D v4. I copied all files as per the instructions. Anyway, I'll check again as it may be the fact that I have a scripts folder outside P3D main folder. I really like to install stuff outside P3D but in this case it may not be possible due to the scripts. Anyway I'll try again.

Manschy

Dimus, lua files in this case should not affect the SODE files, they are independently of each other.
Because there are no red crosses, I assume all objects are installed correctly except for the animations.xml and seasons.xml files. I would do a search for their correct place...

Dimus
March 2nd, 2021, 11:34

Regrettably, this is a known issue with such effects. It's one of the reasons I keep both P3Dv4.5 and P3Dv5.1 on this rig.
