Re: G-2 retractable tail wheel question, it seems a G-2 could have been manufactured either way.

Bf109G-2s from JG/27 at Rhodes, Greece in 1943

Thanks CK

For clearing that up.... seems ppl on net still debate the retractable fixed issue found it very confusing.... these particular one being in Greece
... did they have any well known markings or lost to history.... well just knowing that they existed.... is worth redoing .

Note that I am not a Messerschmitt specialist, but could the closest plane be a G-4 ? This could explain the fixed tail gear.

Hi Roxane-21

It's always possible but the source definitely lists them both as G-2 variants

Seems to be a few discrepancies in the A/C pictured.

1) A/C 2 (further back) seems to have the top and bottom of the vert.stab. clipped (maybe pic was cropped eliminating the tail wheel?)
2) A/C 1 appears to have an antenna mast behind the cockpit, A/C 2 does not (blurred line where mast should be continues below the fuselage line leading me to believe it is a scratch on the film)
3) A/C 1 has a small cowling below the engine area, A/C 2 does not appear to have one (there is a small shadow there but no definitive cowling)
4) and this may just be my old eyes but A/C 1 almost appears to have clipped wing tips (E or F?)

But with so many variants of WWII A/C appearing sometimes within weeks who can be sure?

This isn't G2.... but a G5 gustav with retractable tail wheel

Seems only other than the f .... but if picture correct why go back for this 1 model???

Probably an error/assumption by the artist. The only photo I know for this plane is on the ground and whether there is a cutout for the tail wheel isn't visible. Profile paintings often contain errors and I always take them with some reservation.
