Thanks for posting this Roger. Awesome screenshots! :applause:

Most of the credit for this one goes to Mike Kelley and James "Magoo" Banks.

They made a silk purse out of the sow's ear I gave to them. :-)

Gorgeous aircraft ! Flies so smooth. Kinda makes me think The Shupe team did a Piglet type aircraft. Thanks so much for your hard work on this effort ! Mike :applause:

One reported problem is that the fuel gauge does not work in the 00 military version.

Here is the simple fix procedure:

1) Open the Vultee_XP-54_FSX_00 package aircraft.cfg and find the Fuel Section.

2) Copy paste the following to replace the Fuel Section, then save and test.

[fuel]
//Longitudinal (feet), Lateral (feet), Vertical (feet), Usable(gallons), Unusable (gallons)
fuel_type =1
number_of_tank_selectors =1
electric_pump =1
fuel_dump_rate=0.02000
anemometer_pump=0
manual_pump=1
engine_driven_pump=1
Center1 = 1.0, 0, -0.6, 378, 15

There is a minor texture fix to the 07 Bluebird here:

EDIT: This file is being replaced by another that has the fix for both FS9 and FSX.

Will post the new link when available.

Milton - another one knocked out of the park. Love this bird.

I'm getting a bit of low res on the cockpit frames in the VC - anyone else getting this? I'm also wondering about the nosewheel steering - is there an unlock? I'm getting very little authority on slow taxi speed. Otherwise a spectacular plane. Love the burnished rear fuselage - nice heat effect on the metal paints.

Would make a great spotter for scenery work on my early KEDW scenery project - here's another one I'm using in that role (huge thanks to Milt again for that one, and Ducky/Steve for the paint!):

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/soh_ftp/uploads/imageuploads/758714034709236316.jpg

Based on the "1947 racer" paint, might be a fun scheme for a repainter so inclined. I know I'd fly the wings off it.

Again - thanks for a great project Milt et al!

Regarding nose wheel turning, it is currently set up for 180 degrees, which requires differential braking to make a turn. If you want normal nose wheel turning via rudder authority change the nose wheel steering from 180 to 45 degrees.

Gorgeous plane! Thanks to the Shupe team for this one. Nice work on the VC too. It flies sweet. I took off from Vandenberg just to make sure I had plenty of runway. I needed it as I didn't runup to full military power for take-off as I was trying to baby the engine. I guess it was ahead of its time in that it didn't have the right powerplant. Wonder how it would have done with a Lycoming T55?

The archive has been updated to incorporate v1.1 changes that correct various issues as of August 5th, 2017.

If you downloaded before August 4th, you may want to re-download to replace your current XP-54 folders.

This is a full replacement update.

Fixes include:

Fuel gauge not working
Minor texture issue on the 97 Bluebird
Incorrect night time gauge backlighting texture VC01_L.bmp
Two seats in the VC
FSX Only - Remapped pitots
Coolant (radiator) temp gauges in some liveries
FS9 only - fix some textures that had MIPMaps included

It's amazing the things that can be "not seen" when testing by any number of people.

One tends to be so focused on certain aspects or changes and totally misses the obvious. :-)

Hope all is well now.

Hi Milton, with the latest update, the seat lowering/drop down animation is not working properly. (Shift S) The pilot descends a bit, then pops back into the cockpit. The fuselage door only opens slightly, then closes. Running FSX with dx10 fixer. Seems to be that way on all models. Previous version was uninstalled.

Milton and team... Great job! Works in P3Dv4 as well! I'm going to make some bumps for it, as well as speculars. I just love this type of aircraft. We don't have enough of them of this quality. I highly recommend the book "Experimental & Prototype US Air Force Jet Fighters" By Jenkins and Landis from Specialty press. Features this aircraft among many others.

First pass. Fuselage only. I'm going to refine it just a bit more but I'm really pleased thus far. Note: I've not done anything otherwise to the textures at all, and I've only put in a very rough standby spec just to give a working contrast to the bumps and breakup the alpha that is included in the original textures.

Wow Rick - stunning. Definitely going to be my scenery spotter during my KEDW / NACA build.

Which is an interesting segwey to acknowledging a big thanks to Milt for this and the other interesting birds like the XP-72. The period of exploring the final stages of what was possible with piston engines, before the jet and rocket periods of the 50s and onward. These projects are far more than the sum of their parts - thanks Milt, and thanks Rick et al for the improvements, repaints, etc.

Sorry gents, had my parents come into town for the last week. But, here's the progress report. I've got the bumps complete for the Fuselage and LH wing. They look great. I just haven't had the time to replicate efforts to the final 2 textures. But once I do it will be quick. I'm creating another base metal skin in concert. I'm also creating custom speculars as well. The paint kit is superb. And I've had to create very little from scratch. Just targeted manipulation of the great kit!

I think the issue is the screenshot Milton...my settings in v4 are grainy and I haven't been able to clear it up. Something that has been super annoying to me! In Photoshop it is smooth...I was noticing that many of my textures in P3Dv4 have been skiing up grainy...I need to spend more time in it trying to solve it.
Unless you see that too... In which case I'll have to recalibrate my vision!

Milton, any chance you could add a place holder specular file for the spinner? as you can see here, it gets too dark in certain angles...due to no specular compared to the rest of the airframe.

Rick,

Not sure how to deal with that. This project has been completed, and released to 3 websites with thousands of downloads.

We would have to update all the models to add the specs and release an update.

Is there no other alternative?

Mach3DS
August 23rd, 2017, 19:02
No worries Milton! I'll deal with it. Can simply lighten up the texture completely... It'll work well enough. Keep the stationary texture the same and lighten up the spinning one.

Rick, I will have to look at the issue to see.

With regard to the distribution, I do not usually distribute other people's work unless they are part of the original release.
If this requires the models to be changed, then you could distribute a copy of the replacement model folders with the textures with my approval, assuming the model changes had no impact on the original textures.

Were you also going to distribute a bare metal texture or was your work with an original texture?

I'll get back to you.

Yes, the metal textures are by me, created with the paint kit. If you do make an "update" to the package, you can include it if you wish, and of course along with the bumps, as standard fair.

Ok, here you go last look before I send this off to Milton with the bumps for all to use. I'd like to highlight something that I'm passionate about and that is metal. Many photos circulate of wartime heavy metal. With captions like "you can see how this is very dull" or something similar. Without going into too much detail, the first 2 images below really illustrate this well. One is using the bananabob GlobalEnvmap, while the other is using DYNAMIC reflections. At every altitude and weather combination, the bananabob equipped paint will look pristine. But the Dynamic reflections is less so? Both images are identical other than this. I know, because the sim was paused, and I simply enabled and disabled dynamic reflections. The one using dynamic is JUST as reflective...but it doesn't have the harsh contrast of the bananabob envmap to pull from at Altitude. It has low lever terrain, sky and clouds, which dynamically change the lighting available. Not quite PBR, but closer than not. This illustrate to me what happens in real photos which are then compounded by Black and white film effect. WIth NO color, the eye cannot tell what if anything is actually being reflected in most BW photos. So what my appear dull and non reflective may be reflecting an overcast sky, clouds etc. Obviously there are times when BW high polish is very apparent, but can you tell which is which the photos below?! I bet you can! The images are straight captures no editing other than cropping for size. Anyway, just thought it was cool to see the differece on nice lines! This paint works equally well with Bananabobs OR Dynamic Reflections in P3Dv3+ For FSX Users it may be too polished for you, as FSX light engine is slightly different, but not by much.

So, I was out getting used to the 'Goose and decided to go trolling for marlin...

That is an interesting shot Rob with the shadow, the reflection, and the water effect all close together. :applause:

These pics show some interesting contrasts in light, glossiness, and reflections between painted and bare metal surfaces. An interesting study.

Thanks Milton. I was interested to see what "might have been" had this one been in production. However it will eventually have painted wings and tail area with "cow spot" camo (as I like to call it!) areas.

I could not get FSX to find the texture Racer Bare. Noted the .config was missing the "r" on the sim+= line. It only shows xp54, but when changed to xp54r I got FSX to see and open the bare metal texture.

You are correct. The line should read:

sim=xp54r

My apologies.

Thank you Pam. It was a fun project.

Mike Kelly and James "Magoo" Banks really helped take it up another level with the paint kit, racer versions and their flight models, liveries, and different sounds.

You all did great.. I flew the swa from haneda to osaka vfr tonight and it was a piece of cake, even considering thjat i've never flown that route in fsx before, and without a flight plan ( missed it by ][ THAT much ) .. This plane along with the widow, is going to be one i keep forever..

MZee,

You can get the released version here for either FS9 or FSX native:

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links_search.php?action=show&userid=249&sort=d

When selecting the FSX version it still downloads the v1.0 instead of v1.1?

The high level container folder does say 1.0 but the rest of the package inside is 1.1. Sorry for the confusion.

Milton, I was fascinated with this plane as a kid, poring over WWII aircraft books. Thank you for bringing it to life for us. I never dreamed I'd get to "fly" this machine.

Rick, your usual superior work with metal and paints - let's make some video of these machines in formation action, and maybe racing at Reno! Heritage flight with the MV P-38, MV Corsair, and Milton's Swoose Goose?

Great idea Toby! Let's get this in the air at Reno. Heritage flight sounds perfect as well. Yes this is a nice aircraft. I read about it in a prototype aircraft book I have and never thought I'd be able to fly it it either! Thanks Milton!

.....Well there's a fix posted for the XP-54. While working with another project I opened up one of the Racer's sound folders for a reminder as to how I handled a detail........and all the sound cone entries were missing. (!!!??!!)

This is a feature I get a kick out of......how could this be...?

The date stamp at the top of the sound.cfg tells me that I gave the noise packs one last tweak before the Swoose Racers were shoved out the door......and of course, the editor that I was using is of FS9 vintage.....and wipes out any unique FSX data upon saving. That stuff has to be copied over by hand.

With all the colored streamers, confetti, champagne and party hats.....I forgot.

...And......nobody complained.......(?????)

So check the library if this interests you. For the Allison & Lycoming powered Swoose Racers.....sound cone entries restored.

A bonus, too....an experiment in overdubbing. The Allison engine startup sound is quite reactive.....the pilot is jamming the throttle back and forth like it's a video game.... :a1089:

I noticed the turbocharger was absent (separate wav file) and thought,"It'd be nice if we could hear the turbo come to life at startup, and the notice that it lags well behind the engine's rapid rpm changes."

To quote Mike Kelly, "Done."

Please note, the new sound.cfg files are designed for FSX. Pilots running P3D can validate that sim uses (or expands?) the sound cone stuff? FS9 will give you the cold shoulder, pretend it doesn't know what you're on about.

However.....the Allison startup wav file could be used in FS9 too.......just bakup your original files before overwriting. That goes for all users, all sims.

The things are in the file library here, currently in the "What's New" menu. Look for " XP-54 Racer Sound Fix-up.zip"

It's different in a nice way......I especially enjoy the sound as the racer is departing into the distance, that long deep thrumming echo , atmospherically distorted......sort of haunting. That is pure Nigel Richards right there.

Toss these into the folders and do some flyby's. You'll see!! (......hear...) :mixed-smiley-010:

Milton and team... superb. Just wanted to say thank you for a tough job very well done. Am enjoying the different models tremendously. Thank you all for this wonderful gift. It flies grand, the panels are super and the paints are awesome. I tried to save disc space and only load a couple of liveries... wrong choice. Missed some textures. Then I RTFI and all went well. I need to get a bigger hard drive..

Be sure to grab the update with my bare metal texture, as it contains the bump maps and speculars files which can be placed in the main texture.common folder to enhance all the liveries.

000Rick000, Not sure what you mean. The aircraft come with a "racerbump" tex file along with xp54r .air file. Is this what you were referring to? Not sure if they could look much better. They look good now..Terry

Here you go. install per usual. But take the *_bump.dds & *_spec.dds files and copy them into the texture.common folder in the *_00 model folder. This will trasnsfer the speculars and bumps to all models.

Rick,
You're right, I did not have the correct texture files. I installed the "bare racer" files and the aluminum and stainless steel seem to "pop".
Thank you for the heads up. A job well done. I can only imagine the details involved. Thank you for sharing.. Terry

Glad it's working for you! IMHO, the speculars really add to the already beautifully mastered stock paints from the initial package. And the bumps give the plane a little more umph in that department as well.
