Ted-

You keep tempting me! ATM I'm flying the Orbx World Aleutians in Sibwings' An-2, but soon, very soon I shall be driving London Control batty with Kestrel & Kittyhawk flights in and out of the Royal Suite. It's grand fun fitting in between the 777s on short final ;).

KN628 is just the ticket- Ta!

C

PS- I started the repaint thread asking someone to paint the RAE Dak... So if you are ever inclined... That would be splendid as well!

Here's one of Monty's C-47 used by the Queen. (1961) Notice the special door added to the rear cargo door. Hmm... adding another door... my next project maybe! Yep, I think so!!!

Looking Great , one thing when close up to a DC-3 .. all those little lumpy bits they call rivets :encouragement:

Fact is there are some five hundred thousand (500,000+) rivets were used in the manufacture of the Douglas DC-3 airplane. I believe it after looking at walkarounds of the aircraft!

The average size used in the manufacture was approximately 3-8 inches long, and if laid end-to-end, the rivets would cover a distance of 15,625 feet or more than three miles.

Ted-

I have a feeling your labor of love will be my favorite girl at the ball. Just the ticket for driving London Control quite mad by slowing to 90kts on a long final with a half-dozen heavies behind me. Then gently slowing to make the turn-off for the Royal Suite to pick up HM.... the radio chatter should be brilliant;).

Seriously lovely stuff mate!

Very Nice! I've held off on the C-47. That might have to change.

I'm working on a makeover for the Cal Classic C-46 (and JBK B307) and the rivets can be quite maddening. Good close up pics are hard to find and not many references show the rivets.

There are some areas that I can't see on the C-47 and comb the net daily for that one photo. There are some fantastic blueprints, but at a cost.

Scaling is a problem due the mapping of the model, so are limited to how the rivets look.

I find it fun to see if one can replicate an aircraft in the virtual world! Plus this as inspiration... http://www.manuelflemming.de/douglas-c-47/

Ted, when painting in non-alpha does it make it easier when adding panel lines and rivets? Mike :wavey:

I find it easier to find errors which there is some that I didn't notice with alphas applied. Also depends how dark the metal is. As you can see in the wings a little darker makes the rivets pop. You can soften the rivets by lighten the color as seen in the fuselage. The wings will get a lighter color when finished to match the fuselage. Just experimenting at the moment. I must have changed stuff half a dozen times already.

Love using the curve tool, especially doing specs, and alphas. :untroubled:

Yep, but it's well worth the effort! The DC3/C-47 has a ton of them, although what I'm doing is representative not actual. In other words real shows 5 rivets, I'm showing 4 rivets due to mapping restrictions.

I've not done the normals (only blank bumps) yet, what's done is just textures only.

Great work.... just one suggestion... (and I know you can do it) re: roundels.... on the white portion... rivets show through manificently..
but... and here is the rub... on the blue part they are not visible at all... this robs the "realistic" look... you need to select the blue area
in the rivets layer... and use "lighting" up those rivets on a superimposed layer... (easily done by copying that area in the rivets layer and putting it on another
layer above... make them show... and integrate it back into the rivets layer.. then it all looks uniform...
with liveries that do not have roundels... just use the rivet layer as it was... in the end... it all becomes one layer in the texture.. right?)

Again great work... oh.. another suggestion (the rivets themselves could stand to be cleaned up a bit... (their being a bit irregularly faded in outline, etc.
contrasts with the sharp cleanly crisp lines in the rest of the surfaces) after you clean a single rivet to be well defined
then the rows can be recreated like so many sausages...) Your overall finish really gives a realistic natural metal feel..

Congratulations..

I use this add on for Photoshop 6 in my work. http://quixel.se/suite/

Can work directly on normal maps. Here I've added three different test shapes on top of a bump mapped texture of a F3F model.

In the box you can make changes of the shape on the fly... very handy.

Just think what if I had one of those digital drawing pads... drawing freehand instead creating a path with the pen tool. Besides this is much easier than creating those radial sound sets. Anyways looking forward to your adventure on the B-26, should start a new thread.

Not to hijack your post but are you planning on using any GlobalEnv_AC_Chrome in your WIP? I'm using a 6th Gen Nvidia 660 GPU and in a couple months getting Nvidia 10th Gen GTX 1060.

This is what a Y-U-G-E GlobalEnv_AC_Chrome.dds (96 Mb) file will do with chrome:

The beta model still uses GlobalEnv file which I'm using Banana Bobs version. The alphas are on the light side on Monty.

How did you get grass on the runway? Just kidding. I did test a beta MDL file that had P3Dv.3 Dynamic Reflection turn on. Reflection of the actual surrounding are seen in the skin. So no need for GlobalEnv. I know Jan just switched to P3D so I guessing he's going to want DF as an option.

Just curious in one of your pics the H-stab is not polished (no chrome effect). Also Hani's American Airlines has an alternate GlobalEnv file that looks good to. You got Miss Virginia looking pretty hot!

Here's a few shots of Dynamic Reflection enabled for P3Dv.3. Few testers have P3D on the team.

You can actually see the runway, trees, and clouds in the reflection. Even the prop tip show actual reflection.

I'm happy and glad to of switched to P3d V3.4 - I still have FSX on another drive. I am still in learning curve with what is has to offer but things like Dynamic reflection and the other abilities is has
is really amazing. I can boot the DR slider to the right and pull up other chrome skinned planes and it sure make a difference. Thought I would take a FPS hit using it but haven't notice too much of a drop. Trying to tweak it for
"That perfect image setting" I guess is subjective to the eye of the user. So many sliders in the "Lighting" dept. to adjust and experiment with. + anxiously awaiting Nvidia GTX 1060 DX-12 capable but only Win 10 supports DX-12.

Still have that Yellow Peril here, Ted, load it up in Max every once in a while. There's still a chance that the dev that asked for the source file will come up with something...Or i might finish it myself someday..

It's been how many years now, I think I know who the dev is. Haven't seen him here in quite awhile.

That maybe different aircraft since Monty's had windows in the cargo doors. He did use about three different aircraft. The link pic is of an early roundel and
the tail markings too.

I just need to move the roundel over more closer to the door hinges. The "K" is different, so that will be changed.

https://images.britishpathe.com/?id=68110&num=43&size=still

Diffidently need to fix the tail rivets and decals. Also the pictures is at an angle, was using the rivet pattern to measure the decals.

TuFun, you are a magician! There is only one tiny detail that sticks to my eyes every time, when I am looking at this magnificent bird.
I apologize every person who accounts me as some kind of "those damned rivet counters" and who wants only find issues from
a perfect work. But I find, there will never be such a work, which could not be even better. And now to the point!
Although this modell is nearly perfect and the BEST freeware by far, there is (in my mind) one detail which is wrong. Sorry if
the word sounds harsh and my intension is not in any way to insult anybody and especially Manfred Jahn, who has created
the external lines of this simulated plane. But, after seen Javis´s latest video (in the location 0:59), I dare to claim that the nose profile is little bit to
convex. More closely, the upper part of the cone starts sloping immediately in the point ahead the windshield. Same thing with the cross-section of the cone, which should have more
rounded upper half especially in the point where the vertical rivet line meets the windshield and naturally ahead. These arguments are easely seen in the video, especially in the b/w-picture taken of the
production line. In other words, the cone should be more pointy. What I have said, might feel hairsplitting, but I allege, that
those mentioned details have a very essential influence for the look of this gem.
I dared to write all this, because the plane deserves it!

VesaJuhani

The video I was talking about was submitted by Javis and was concerning the Multi Pilot Simulation´s new DC-3 simulator.

Nah, please don't..... bound to be an endless discussion that leads to nowhere.

@ VesaJuhani :

Is Rembrandt's Nightwatch perfect ?.... Many art historians claim it's not. Is it a masterpiece ? Every art historian will tell you it is. One of the most famous oil paintings in the world. Would it be a sensible idea to try and do away with the claimed imperfections ? Of course not !!

The nose section of an aircraft is usually one of the most difficult objects to model. From my own experience i can say that's especially true for the C-47/DC-3. And in my FS Dakota book i'd say Manfred's rendition of a C-47/DC-3 nose section deserves a master's degree.

That's why i wouldn't even start thinking about going to mess about with it. And i'm about 99% sure Manfred wouldn't either. I mean, why ???....

Maybe, just maybe, another dev will have a go at a C-47/DC-3 model in the near future. I can only wish them the best of luck to try and match the beauty of Manfred's model, let alone try to surpass it.

I mean, just page thru the screenshots Tufun posted above. Can it get any better ?.... I don't think so !

Sorry, VJ, with all due respect but personally i don't think there's anything wrong with the nose section. It's deffinately the one thing that it's supposed to simulate conform the real nose : It's cute !

Thank you for your comment!
I can completely understand your comprehensive arguments and will happily continue flying with this magnificent creation.
There is only one thing, I must disagree with you and that is: the nose profile is not completely perfect like nothing else
made by a human being! I only wanted to hear, is it possible and reasonable to try to improve it before the final release.
I wish all the best for the project in the future and yourself as well!
For my part the case is closed.

Cheers to you too!

Right you are ! And i dare say stuff made by Mother Nature isn't always perfect neither, is it .. I mean, why does she make us loose our hair ? Why does she make us go to the dentist ? Why does she make us fat if we eat carbohydrates ? Why did she create Frans Bauer ? The list is endless...

Perfection what we seek it is not, young padawan, appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural and virtual objects and processes it is.

Article from the "The Royal Air Force Review"

October 1948 Vol. 4 No. 3 of "The Royal Air Force Review"

On the ground, as in the air, the same high standards are the rule, and the crews are among the Air Force's best tradesmen. They are particularly proud of their aircraft and the hand-polishing is just an outward manifestation of the pride. It may be wearying work, polishing the entire fabric of an aircraft with metal polish and a handful of rag, but it is done by hand because machine buffing would gradually thin down the heads of the aluminum rivets. And, when there are not enough ground crew to do the work, the aircrews themselves take time off from their training and lend a hand. The results: a No. 24 Squadron aircraft stands out on the airfield like an "export only" job...

But exterior glitter is not the only thing that makes them exceptional. Many are "special" inside as well. The Chief of Air Staff Dakota is said to be one of the world's most luxurious aircraft. Its floors are carpeted, its fuselage paneled in walnut and lined overhead with cream pigskin. Its soft amber interior lights are built-in and have push-button switches for each. Five swiveling armchairs upholstered in brown leather, two settees which can be converted into bunks for night flying, and two small cream leather-covered stools complete the seating accommodation. A Concealed radio set provides soft music (the engines are barely audible in the main cabin) and an altimeter, airspeed indicator and clock over the door.

As for Field Marshal Montgomery's aircraft, he designed the interior himself with the same workmanship and finish as described above, but has neither bunks nor galley. He rarely sleeps or takes meals in the air, but spends most of his time reading and writing.

... right side forward fuselage.

I'm sure it's a fantastic video, Ted, but I can't see it?

I just noticed something else: in the detailed side view you show in post #202, the panel lines seem a bit too grey to me. If I look at detailed images of DC-3/C-47's around the world, the panel lines are actually quite sharp, dark and well pronounced on the bare metal ones,
like this one:
http://media.spokesman.com/photos/2012/09/07/cit07_srx_dc-3.jpg
or this one
https://planefinder.net/images/5983902:Photo:1414117.jpg

while on painted aircraft, they become more vague as in your skin, like here:
http://www.airplanegeeks.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/tabitha_may.png

maybe something to look at?

Do you see the pilots from the outside? I think the C47_pilot.png as indicated in the obj file is missing?

I have the missing crew also. Haven't gone through the Aeroworx Douglas (Manfred) C-47 to see if any fix is in the works.
Not doing any textures for their version.

No problem with the lines, adjustable if need be. One example on this one is the lines are almost not visible. Similar to what I've done.

By all means that is an exceptional example, most are as you say are darker from grunge, dirt, etc.

Lines set to 100%, no alphas, no bumps....

Due to a computer failure in December it was not worth it to fix or upgrade. Using a netbook to go online for now. Useless for PS/Quixel or running FSX.

I'm looking to build a new system with one of those 9900k or 9700k processors around the end of the year or early next year. Hoping the reviews are good.

Also looking to pick up one of those Nvidia RTX cards when P3Dv5 is released.

Sorry to see most of my pics are missing, that's due to www.fsfiles.org (http://www.fsfiles.org) hack.

Sorry to hear, but it sounds like you will have a great new system... will await Monty’s steed then.

It's been a nice break really. Was to busy with work and all. I retired a few weeks ago and was kinda frustrating not being busy, but now I've settle in and enjoying the time.

Oh, can't wait to see the review on the PMDG 747-8.

Video posted today.

Hey Taco, it's just getting into a new rhythm that's all. :biggrin-new: Have lots of plans in the future (computer) and conservative body building routine.

Also spending time studying with video instructions on the latest in textures (PBR, V-ray, etc.).

* Bad word these days! :dizzy: Certain language at work these days are not permissible. Glad I retired in time.

I'm pretty sure that if that sort of thing is your cup of tea... you will enjoy the new release :)

You know it's funny, I don't own any of their products. I'm more interested in their technical reviews. Coding is probably the most mysteries thing done in modeling and they do some of the best stuff. Same with A2A birds!

Now if they did a 707, which I have the CS version and the only jet airliner, then that would be the one.

Ted- Installing now, ta! The only change that seemed necessary was that I changed "sim=Douglas_DC3_v1.4" to "sim=Douglas_DC3_v1.5" in the .cfg. That done I was able to load, and here we are at London City, preparing for a Kestrel Flight. Many thanks, I shall enjoy this in Prepar3d v4.3, methinks :)

It's in constant development among other works in progress. Here are some development testing I'm doing on Digital Dakota Works (Manfred/Visser) C-47. No ETA.

BluePrint is easier for me to see errors and for testing purposes.

What you are seeing in detail now can't be done on the current model. I've done a total rework of the details this year.

If you want PBR then I think that the P3Dv4.4 SDK need to be used. That will be up to Manfred or Jan.

For now, I see no reason to go with P3Dv4. Maybe P3Dv5 will impress me.... maybe.

In another thread Jan mentions reworking the model into a DC-3. Perhaps then would be the time to make the move? Regardless, you have my attention :)

I have mocked up a DC-3 with doors on the starboard side. Jan's focus is on the Convair for now and the DC-3 is on hold. A new pattern will have to be created for a DC-3.
