As some of you are aware of, I have been working on a payware Eurofighter Typhoon for P3D / FSX for a while now...
Here is a work in progress video along with some screenshots (most of what you see is from P3Dv3 but package will work also in FSX):

looking great :)

Dino how will your Typhoon run on a bit older Intel Core2 Duo E6600 quadcore 2.6GHz with a nvidia GTX 560ti with OS Win7 32bit

...well, it is too early to tell. But this is not a very lightweight model.
We'll find out when the avionics are complete.

Hi Dino, Can't wait also! Looks great! Will it tacpacked (as I remember, the answer is "yes" ;) ) ? :applause:

Dino Cattaneo
August 30th, 2016, 00:13
...Tacpack = YES

At the moment the model is capable of launching AIM-9L, AIM-120 and has the gun - and can release GBU-10 and GBU-12.
I started working with VRS to extend its capabilities, possibly to include ASRAAM and IRIS-T - but I need to find the time to create models for those.

Bravissimo Dino!!

VRS cannot model European weapons? ASRAAM, IRIS-T, Meteor, KEPD350 Taurus, Exocet, Mica... ??

Dimus
August 30th, 2016, 02:28
I guess devs may develop their own, like M2M did for the M2000C for the Magic and R530 missiles.

Dino Cattaneo
August 30th, 2016, 02:36
I have been talking with VRS to add at least the Asraam and the IRIS-T.
I'd also like to add Meteor and StormShadow... we'll see.

Developers cannot add weapons to Tacpack independently - for obvious reasons VRS manages their introduction. You are allowed to ask for the inclusion of a limited number of weapons, provided that you supply performance data and 3D models to them.
The problem is gathering accurate weapons performance data - which is not easy to find... afaik we should be at a good point on this issue.
Also, developers need to supply VRS with copyright-free 3D models for distribution - and I need to find the time to do that... currently my model employs licenced meshes, but the ones for VRS need to be 100% original and free for them to use (understandably).

We'll see what we can do. Maybe they won't be ready for the release but may become available at a later date.

Dino I'm looking forward to your Eurofighter with a lot of nostalgia, especially since you plan to make it TacPack compatible.
I was a great fan of the EF2000 simulator from DiD. That sim was a gem at that time, and I flew hundreds of hours in it, dropping GBUs on bridges and tunnels with the laser targeting screen in the virtual cockpit ! (that was in 1995...).
However I was quite terrible as a player. Each of my missions would end up in a 1 vs 10 enemy planes, leading to the immediate death of my wingmen and myself...
Of course, the same occurred later on in Falcon 4, for exactly the same reasons :D

Knowing I will at least be able to play around with the air to ground weapons (dropping GBUs mainly) in that Eurofighter makes me quite excited to say the least. :jump:

Dino, I can provide you both an AIM-9L and an Iris-T mesh, a Smokewinder too if you want. They're not mapped yet but I can do that if you need. Of course, free of charge.

@Daube

EF2000 by DID was great...and I was a terrible player as well!

@SixGhost

Thanks - I already have the AIM-9L (I am using the one from VRS)... I also have an IRIS-T that needs to be mapped... Smokewinder would be nice.
Problem is models need to be below 2K triangles to be efficient in real-time rendering...
Also, models would ultimately go to VRS and they must be free to do whatever they want with those.
We can talk in private on this topic.

Assuming you have the visual model animations for this Typhoon under full control: maybe a good moment to include the "weapons drag" feature now ?
Let me know if you still want it, 'cause it probably requires some tweaks for this model .....

Still WIP - over a more "natural" environment for the Typhoon - Torino Caselle (where the Alenia plant is located and where the Italian Typhoons are built).
By the way Trend has published a ransomware decryption tool that can, in some cases, decrypt the CERBER (which is the ransomware I got :-( ) - Unfortunately that did not work.
I was hoping to recover, between the other things, the Typhoon paintkit... but it seems it is not possible. So for the moment the Tiffy has one livery - maybe I'll add the "primer" one later on... - we'll see.

Wow! Dino, you make it so hard to walk away from FSX. I really want to try to migrate to Prepar3D, but seeing all these great titles still being released primarily for FSX first, then porting over to Prepar3D makes it tough to leave. Thank you for such beautiful works of art, as well as thanks for all the great payware and freeware developers. You all keep this sim running so strongly.

I believe Dino works primarily in P3D so you're safe.

Thanks...I just have a hard time leaving the droves of add on's I have bought for FSX and I know many will port over fairly easy but doesn't always seem to be a straightforward operation. I just see these great add on's screaming to be flown in my FSX rig. Admittedly, I need to read more up on Prepar3D and the license choices, what does and does not work in Prepar3D and most importantly, whether Orbx sceneries, landclasses, and Traffic AI are even necessary.

This model just looks great and I'm not really a Typhoon fan, but this one is going on my hard drive, whether it's FSX and/or Prepar3D.

Thanks for the appreciation!

Just to clarify one point - YES the project is being developed to be compatible with both FSX and P3Dv2 and v3.
The leading development platform is P3Dv3 - this means that I am optimizing the model and the graphics for this platform (no major things, but there are some minor differences in the shaders).
So, it will look better in P3D.

Most likely, the versions will be functional except some sensors (Pirate and TFLIR) which most likely will not be available in FSX.

There will be an unique installer that will allow you to install the software in FSX, ESP (if anyone uses it?), P3Dv1, V2 and V3

This is a payware effort - but will not be a super-expensive add-on.... price has not been set probably around 25€ + taxes - this is also thanks to the free contributions by some talented developers.

Regards

Dino

The scale looks pretty good to me at a glance; I haven't measured it.

Be aware that it would be very difficult to tell correct scale based on a camera with God knows what size and angle lens compared to a 2D screenshot from a simulator. I trust that Dino has done his research. ;)

Here are few pics (taken in P3D) from the latest internal build.... significant progress has been made in all areas:
- The external model is complete but for the drag chute
- The virtual cockpit model is missing some minor details... but it is almost complete
- The avionics are in progress, but the basics are in place. 6 MFD pages out of 18 are ready and working.
- We have a custom sound package courtesy of Serge Luzin (thank you!) based on real world sounds which adds a lot to the immersion
- Rob Barendregt provided a gauge to implement configuration-dependent drag
...and, last but not least, Roy Holmes is working on the flight model (a provisional one is already in place and it is definitely better than the one I did initially - thanks Roy!)

So, we are at a good point - unfortunately it is highly unlikely that it will be ready before Christmas as I hoped... but as usual, it is done when it is done.

Superb ! :applause:
One remark about the mirrors: do you plan to make them simply reflective in P3D, so that we could get the real reflections ?
As far as I understood, this is just a simple flag in the material, but the orientation of the mirrors need to be correct to be useful :)

Dino Cattaneo
November 12th, 2016, 07:11
@Daube - well, yes - flagging the material will result in a real "reflection" in P3Dv3 (if the user has set the dynamic reflections). A better way, IMHO, is to use the render-to-texture method (which will also work in P3Dv2). They both have a cost in terms of frame rate, obviously. Then, none of these will work in FSX. For the moment I am working for the FSX version first - and then I'll move to P3D...

I don't recall testing any model with render to texture... (or is it implemented like this in your Tomcat already ?)
The Razbam Harrier, which was made only for FSX, has simple reflections on the mirrors in the VC. In FSX, it's the envmap textures which is reflected. In P3Dv3, it's a real reflection. Granted, it's not beautiful, but nice enough.
How much better would it be with the render to texture ?

Dino Cattaneo
December 19th, 2016, 08:28
@jagl04

Unfortunately no... My "real life" job has destroyed my schedule... at present I think the Typhoon may be feature complete by the end of January (although it is already flyable!)

@Daube

Well... thing goes like this. If you flag a material for environment mapping reflection, it will show the usual "simple" reflection - unless it is in P3Dv3 with dynamic reflections turned on (which generates the "actual" reflections).
The way I did it in the T-45 and F-14 (it is an optional feature and needs to be "activated" by the user) is a render-to-texture...so there is a camera that points to your six and its rendered in the mirrors. You can control the settings and resolution of the camera, as well as a number of other parameters. This method works also on P3Dv2.4+...but it is more resource-intensive.
So, for the moment I am a little undecided... I may want to go for the new method.

For those who missed the update on Facebook:

Unfortunately I will not be able to release the Beta version of the Typhoon before Chirstmas as I planned... sorry for that, but it makes no sense to have an "half baked" Beta version. With the current pace, I should have all the 3D modeling and the MFD system complete by the end of the year... but it is coming along quite nicely...trust me... or trust the pictures :-)

That second picture is really cool :)

Concerning the first picture, could you remind me what kind of weapons are you planning to support ? I'm especially interested in the laser-guided bombs, since they remind me the good old EF2000 (DiD) days :D It was in 1995, a sim in which we could aim and drop a laser bomb from a virtual cockpit ! (and I think it was also possible in TFX, from two years before if I'm not mistaken...). Looking forward to do that again in P3D, 20 years later :jump:

Dino Cattaneo
February 6th, 2017, 08:54
EF2000 by DID was awesome (and so was their F22 simulator and TFX) - I've spent countless hours with ther games (including F-29)!

So far the Typhoon supports GBU-10 and GBU-12 (both will have USN colors, as they come from Tacpack) LGBs, as well as AGM-88 and GBU-31 (they are both part of the Typhoon weaponry although afaik no air force uses them with this aircraft). Storm Shadow will be present as visual loadout only (non functional).

Also, the aicraft will support AIM-9, AIM-132, IRIS-T, AIM-120 and Meteor A-A missiles (although at present AIM-132 and IRIS-T don't work due to a bug).

Dino, please ensure the aircraft can be started from cold&dark without running into troubles with typical problems such as missing avionic switches etc... The kind of problems created by the usual cold&dark default flights in which we switch everything off, including generators, avionics, radios etc... Since some planes don't have these switches, having to press CTRL+E after starting the plane is sometimes a bit frustrating ;)

Yes, I have decided to include some optional features from the "Eurofighter 2020" feature list, including JDAM, AGM-88 and CFTs. Storm Shadow will be present, too - but won't work with Tacpack (at least for the moment).

The Eurofighter consortium is indeed working on CFTs although AFAIK there is no customer order. More info here:
https://theaviationist.com/2014/04/22/eurofighter-typhoon-cft/

As for the "cold and dark" potential issues, I have to admit I often neglect these in my planes - I will have a look... as Bjoern noted, it is quite easy to implement some code that makes sure that non-existent switches are Always "on".

...then, Beta testing will strart soon - so we'll know if I screwed up something big.

It is still missing several figures and all of the weapons information...

Just a quick note to let you guys know that the Beta testing has started!

Hopefully the Typhoon will be released by the end of the month!

That's good news !
Do you have any rough estimation of the price ? I'm a future customer :)

EDIT: just a bit of criticism, I don't really like the "material" of the canopy glass. When I look at real pictures of the Eurofighter, the canopy glass looks a bit darker and much more reflective. On your last shot, it looks a bit blueish and not so reflective. Or is it just the view angle ?

On this older shot, the canopy looks good, though... then it must have been the view angle. Sorry :P

How's the VAS usage? More or less than the F-35?

@Daube

Welll...it depends on the view angle, the camera used in the picture, but also on the simulator ;-). I am mostly using P3Dv3 for my screenshots, with dynamic reflections turned on.

@DagR

As for the VAS we are on the same league. BTW on my system the Typhoon has a better fps performance, but that is mostly due to the fact that its MFD system is not as complex as the F-35 one (I hope I'll never have to do such a complex MFD again!)

Dino

Beta is going forward quite nicely - so I am playing with repaints (which were not initially planned)...

Any chance for a photorealistic repaint, perhaps ?

We are almost there... here are the "final" screenshots (taken in P3D v3 - but the product is FSX compatible)... Hopefully it will be released in few days.

+1!

Really looking forward to this release. It looks superb.

I will need to start investigating some Tiger Meet repaints (and learning how to repaint :biggrin-new:).

Cheers,

Beautiful Dino! Just a hint however, German Typhoons don't mount Pirate IRST!:wavey:

@Luca

You are in general right, but I do not have the bandwidth to support multiple models... anyway, as far as I know, there are indeed a couple of german aicrafts that are equipped with Pirate (may be they are test aicrafts...see pic here: http://www.gettyimages.it/detail/foto/eurofighter-typhoon-of-the-german-air-force-immagine-royalty-free/476873297 )

AFAIK Austria is the only country which has no Pirate-equipped Typhoons.

As far as I know, Austria uses aircraft from the Tranche 1 standard, which are not equipped with PIRATE up until Block 2 and beyond. The Luftwaffle has a potpourri of Tranche 1 and 2 birds and is slated to receive Tranche 3 and 3A ones someday.

This jet has IMHO has some similarities to the Dassault_Rafale are they related? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dassault_Rafale

If I remember correctly, France was initially part of the Eurofighter project, but early in the project, they separated to do their own model, which ended up being the Rafale.
I don't know the details.
