I thought I would post up some info about my works in progress and real world itinerary.

I'll be very busy with my move out of California for the next two weeks. The actual move date is around the 23rd of this month, but I'm not sure how long it will take to get satellite installed at the new digs. If I go dark for a couple of weeks, it is because of the move.

I've been devoting most of my time to the re-model and getting packed, so the WIP projects have only gotten early AM attention. The C-47 is pretty well up and running, so now I can get back to my works in progress, which include the F-7F VC, the Abrams P-1 Explorer and a project I took on about three months ago.

I haven't been able to devote much time to the new project, so I haven't posted any pics. I did take a few days to get a flying model completed with animations and new UVW mapping. Once I get the studio set up after the move I'll be starting the interior model and VC. This is Matt Ivey's exterior model, so the finished airplane will be a collaboration between Matt and myself. Matt provided an exquisite model to use as a foundation, but I'll be expanding things from this point. The model will be FSX, FSX_SE and P3D compatible with all the bells, whistles and eye candy included.

The possibilities for Buffalo skins will be endless, so I'll be including a comprehensive PK as well.

The pilot figure is a place holder courtesy of Milton Shupe and Jan Visser. Animation by me.

At this stage, the model is a flying "buck". I'll be adding bumps, spec and other bits once I get the final modeling completed and UVW mapped. That said, it is definitely worth showing at this stage.

Thank you sir.

We are organized and pre-packed so it should go fairly smoothly...I hope. It will feel good to get away from the ski resort prices...cost of living here is higher than Hawaii!!! I'll be right on the ocean, so that will be a big change from the alpine desert.

Nice thing about the sim, I have extensively modeled KMMH, KBIH and a few hundred square miles of wilderness. When I start to miss the place I can come always come back for a virtual visit. :encouragement:

Brewster Buffalo Progress

Today begins packing the truck for the actual move out of CA. I'll be offline for a week or two, but I wanted to post up the latest work on the F2A Buffalo.

Here are some shots of the Brewster F2A Buffalo at its current stage of development, which is now a light study to get the bump and skin lighting appropriate for the model.
The model is rendered in a basic grey, white/specular skin with bump mapping fairly well developed, but very much a WIP.

At this stage the specular levels will be fine tuned to suit the actual service skin and bump map heights will be fine tuned.

Where abouts are you locating to? There are a few of us in Southern California that try to meet at air shows around here. Would be great to meet you.

Where abouts are you locating to? There are a few of us in Southern California that try to meet at air shows around here. Would be great to meet you.

It would be great to meet you too Paul. If there is a drawback to our forum, it is that we are rather sequestered by our locations and the distance between friends.

I grew up in Huntington Beach, surfed for 35 years before the ocean got sick. I moved to Mammoth Lakes, CA permanently in 1999. I love this area and the isolation, but the sage brush is requiring too much from my immune system. Kind of like living on the ocean and being allergic to salt water...lol.

This move is north and out of California. We will be landing in a beautiful and isolated spot on a cliff overlooking the Pacific. This is a temporary location, but lovely and suitable while we begin to look for the right property to develop to suit our needs. We have spent the last year upgrading and re-modeling our little place here, just south of KMMH. I have a spectacular view, overlooking Lake Crowley with cattle in the front yard and the East Slope directly at my back.

It's kind of ironic, we finally have the place the way we would like to see it, but will be leaving it for someone else to enjoy.

My wife and I prefer to keep our actual destination to ourselves, but I'll share some details when I get the studio set back up. I've put in 100 hour weeks for the last five years, first with the ORBX work, then with my own. It was necessary to invest the time to the dev work and the house, but I would like to scale the hours back and devote some time to the gym and other interests.

Thanks for your interest Paul. I'm looking forward to working out of the new studio and moving closer to releasing my various packages. It's been a long time in development.

Best,
G

Hey Gordon I used to surf the California coast on my Bob Ford surfboard. I went to college in Southern California and then worked out of San Ramon, CA for 17 years with ADP. I miss those beautiful waves! Moved back to Texas. The biggest I saw in South Padre were about 3 feet high! LOL

Absolutely will be releasing the scenery. As it stands now I've got:

KRNO Reno/Tahoe International nearly complete, Reno Stead is in the wings.
KBIH Eastern Sierra Regional nearly complete
KMMH Mammoth Yosemite nearly complete.
My vegetation library is basically RTM
The autogen is nearing completion.

Matt asked me if I would take on the Buffalo a while back, so now that the C-47 Beta is released I felt it was time to bring Matt's model up to speed. You guys are going to love the flight model, not the performer that later aircraft became, but no slouch either. Feels like a Jug, but without the massive power and weight.

Current airplane projects:
F7F Tigercat VC
Abrams P-1 Explorer full package
Brewster Buffalo with VC.

Kind of a large work load, but nothing I can't handle.

OK I admit that I've gone sabbatical and devoted some quality time to learning airplanes, but it doesn't hurt to be multi-dimensional and I've never been one to concentrate on one project at a time.

I had the sceneries nearly ready two years ago but lost it all in a Windows/Java update debacle that devastated my drives. Had to rebuild...nearly from scratch. One of the reasons I'm not completely enamored with Mr. Gates nor his legacy. Opening myself up to a thrashing with that, but I call a spade a spade.

Once I get this set ready for market I'll launch the product line. To be truthful, I've been waiting for the economic fundamentals to sort themselves out before I contract into a commercial venture. At this time I wouldn't be comfortable plugging into any existing. Once the bubble blows and things re-boot on the other side there will be a more suitable economic climate to plug into. IMO.

Aside from failing economies...lol...I'm watching the tech very closely. I don't want to lock on to a platform that may or may not have legs. I'm structuring my technology to be adaptable, but I don't want to reverse engineer a bunch of stuff when 64 bit comes online.

In the meantime, I'm expanding the product line.

I felt that I needed to finish some details before I tear down the studio today for the move, so I got up early and dialed in some details on the rivet/fasteners and bump mapping.

Bump heights are more subtle, especially reinforcing tape on the fabric panels.
Made the fastener patterns around cowl and forward fuse more accurate.

Current shots from the AM work.

The Buffalo was intended to be a replacement for the F3F, and had an overlapping service range. I haven't searched the details...yet, but it seems likely that both airplanes would use similar or identical cameras.

Still one week away from internet install at the new location, but using coffee shop for vital com. :encouragement:

I'm filling my time working on projects, focusing on the Buffalo. One basic US navy training skin in sea blue/insg white completed and working on the VC modeling. I have some very good pics of the cockpit so the modeling is progressing well. I'll load some prelim shots on the thumb drive and upload next time I come to town for coffee and Bravo Sierra with the indigenous natives.

Move went OK...nothing got broke or mangled. Sim booted up fine, and the new studio is pretty awesome.

I had three weeks to fill waiting for internet installation at the new studio. I filled my time modeling, animating and filling out the F2A Buffalo and working on the new F7F 3DS Max exterior and VC models. Mr. Shupe graced me with full creative license on the F7F, so I decided to upgrade from the original GMAX model to an entirely new model in 3DS Max, based on the GMAX original.

Here are a few prelim shots of the Buffalo VC, plus one basic Navy skin for my flying buck. This was a very complex cockpit, so the modeling will take some time. The basics are beginning to take shape with a frame and basic cockpit fundamentals in place. Smaller details and plumbing will be forthcoming.

For these shots, I've poached the MK 20 reflector sight from the F7F VC, but I'll replace it with a Mark 8 (yet to be modeled).

A first rate product. Excellent work as always!!

I am in the process of reading through "Joe Rochefort's War," author's name Showers. Rochefort was the cryppie who deciphered enough of the latest JN-25 IJN radio code to allow Nimitz to ambush the Japanese fleet at Midway and sink four IJN carriers. The book talks about other episodes he was involved in, including the second Japanese Navy air attack on Pearl Harbor, in March 1942, by two H8K flying boats. Both Emilys dropped bombs but they didn't hit anything of value. What most folks don't know is the same two Emilys a few days later attacked Midway Atoll which at that time for fighter defense had only USMC F2A-3 Buffaloes - no F4Fs. The Buffaloes were scrambled in time to attack both flying boats. One escaped into some handy clouds and successfully evaded further attack. The other H8K was shot down into the sea by one of the Buffaloes. What makes this notable is the Buffalo was not supposed to have that robust an armament; the H8K1, a sizable and robust aircraft, that was shot down had at least partial cannon armament. So the Buffalo apparently had quite a "bite" against certain types of opposition.

I'm making progress in the VC despite some glitches with Win10 and 3D Studio.

Animations are live as I add in components but the gauges are mock ups while I build out the VC. The basics are beginning to take shape, but there is a lot of plumbing, cables, nuts and bolts yet to be added.

Once I finalize all locations I'll build in the projections.

While the build is developing, I'm approaching each component individually, working out bump mapping, reflected light, color, texture and specular. This is a process due to the fact that each color throws light differently and needs attention in three alpha layers that all contribute to gloss, shine and light. It's an intuitive process.

While my Win10 update problem has slowed me down in 3DSMax, I've been able to work on other projects. I'm still able to make video without too many problems, so I thought it might be time to put together a short video showing the F2A3 VC work in progress.

The VC is coming along nicely and is at a stage where I'm modeling, mapping and texturing individual components. Right now it's a light study, working on bump, specular alpha lighting variables and baking in ambient occlusion for darker areas of the inner fuse. The panel is not complete, so the gauges have not been brought to life. You will note in the video that the gauges are mock ups. Don't flog me too hard over the silly looking read outs. lol
The majority of the large bits are done, now I'm working on the plumbing and small detail parts. The more experienced modelers will realize that this is the wrong gun sight for the F2A3. I poached this one from my F7F VC as a placeholder until I model the earlier Mark8 or Mark10. I need to do a bit of research to find which ones are appropriate for the Marine or European variants. Regardless...it still looks really good.

This is my first attempt at building a VC, gauges and all of the various coding involved. It's a big task, and I've developed a very high regard for those who do it well.

The video also showcases my KBIH Eastern Sierra Regional and KMMH Mammoth Yosemite Airports and High Def Photoreal environment terrain. The terrain utilizes my enhanced autogen and vegetation libraries that will be released concurrent with the projects.

Enjoy the video...comments welcome.

Great video and excellent modeling. Are the airports being released through Orbx or do you have your own version of People Flow?

Thanks, and good question Sundog.

Let me be very clear on this issue.

There won't be any ORBX library objects, or assets from any other developer in my projects. I've given Mr. Venema my personal assurance on this issue.
The video includes some flow objects to develop atmosphere, but only for entertainment.

My projects won't be released through ORBX although I am engineering my sceneries to be as compatible as possible with other platforms. They will "stack" above other sceneries and thereby occlude any sceneries lower in the stack.

With regard to animated people, trees, vegetation and library objects...there will be animated objects for FSX and P3D, but they will not use architecture utilized by other developers.

One reason it is taking so long to finish these projects is that I am developing all of my own assets i.e ground support, vehicles, vegetation, buildings, autogen...the list goes on. It's a marathon, but I'm making good progress.

Well done video, highlites your work very well. I grew up in Southern Calif, and know the high desert climes well. Your scenery is extremely realistic, and the autogen is very realistic, especially the scrub brush, which really makes the scene. Looking forward to the release, when it is ready. Your talent and dedication really show in your work so far. Well done.:applause::applause::applause:

Far exceeding my expectations Gordon. When I handed my Buffalo model over to you for onward development I was confident it would be good but that is exceedingly good... thank you. And what a backdrop.

Gordon, that looks real good, both the scenery and the aircraft! I'm looking forward to making a few KNIL paints for it.
Keep up the good work!

This one will get a comprehensive PK. Lots and lots of skins to do...and a nice airplane to fly, even if she isn't the prettiest girl at the dance.

This is my first attempt at building a VC, gauges and all of the various coding involved. It's a big task, and I've developed a very high regard for those who do it well.

Since the instrumentation on this bird is rather simple, you can stick to the default animation and mouse rectangle code from the modeldef, which at least saves you from having to do all the code anew.

I took the plunge an spent the last three days learning how to build VC Panels. I built out the panels for the Buffalo...she's got live gauges...:very_drunk:
I'll need to do some bitmap editing to bring the gauge faces closer to the real airplane, but it's good for beta flying.

Not long now Matt...you will have a flying beta model.

Awesome work and video Gordon!

i noticed that when you were taxiing after landing, the "rock throwing" effect was triggered on your wheels. That means that the taxiway is considered ground and not tarmac surface by the sim. Is the taxiway texture a very hi res photoreal ground or a GP?

That chunk of taxiway is a tiled GP, but not yet with a platform attached. It's been a while since I edited KMMH in ADE, but it's possible that there is no concrete under that poly. The release version will have all those bits tuned up. :encouragement:

Great! Just asking as I am now slowly trying to learn about use of GPs instead of the standard FSX textures for runways and taxiways.

That particular poly is a hand painted asphalt tile. I use high res texture sheets and tile them, but also add overlays of grime and cracks to break up the repeating patterns.

That's what I'm also trying to do. My home base Tatoi LGTT, which I'm building now has a very light colour asphalt texture and minimal markings, very different than the FSX or even REX textures. I may contact you in PM though if I need help, no need to hijack this thread any more. Good luck with all your projects!

It is looking really SNAZZY Gordo :encouragement: ... I wonder how it would have feared had they put a larger motor in it just to hop up its performance, after all someone was thinking right with near all round viz.
